Comment on location of Geological Investigation

I. Purpose of Geological Test

1. To confirm of bearing strata of bridge piles for abutment and pier

Core boring
Standard penetration test
Dutch cone penetration test

2. To confirm bearing capacity of spread foundation for retaining wall

Exploratory boring (Core sampling)
Standard penetration test
Sounding test or the foundation of structure

3. To confirm the stability of cantilever sheet pile (Temporary and Permanent)

Exploratory boring (Core sampling)
Standard penetration test
Unconfined Compression Test
CU Triaxial Compression Test

4. To confirm the permeability of foundation of temporary steel sheet pile

Exploratory boring (Core sampling)
Permeability test

5. To conform the bearing capacity of embankment

Hand auger sampling
Unconfined Compression Test

6. To conform the foundation soil for heightening retaining wall (to check whether replacement is
necessary or not)
Hand auger
Physical test of sampled soil from boring

7. Stability of embankment materials

CU Triaxial Compression Test
Unconfined Compression Test
8. Settlement on the soft soil location
Exploratory boring (Core sampling)
CU Triaxial Compression Test
Consolidation test

II. Idea for distribution of location of Geological test

1. Available quantity is limited. Quantity should be effectively distributed to structure sites.

2. One location of exploratory boring is distributed to one structure because of limitation of
quantity.
3. Location of exploratory boring and Dutch cone penetration test is distributed at equal distance
so as to make the geological profile
4. Testing location is equally distributed to left bank and right bank.
5. Core of soil layer of foundation of temporary steel sheet pile coffer dam shall be carefully
check the permeability and in-siti permeability test shall be conducted.
6. Sediment deposit on the existing canal bank shall be examined by hand auger.
7. For the foundation of permanent sheet pile, unconfined compressive test is conducted.
8. Subgrade for the embankment which height is more than 2.0m, CU triaxial compressive test is
conducted.
