CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

This will include background material in the form of a literature review. A thorough and
comprehensive review of relevant literature and other sources such as commercial products and
existing systems is documented here. A review of relevant work by other authors and relationship
between this and the project work should form the main thrust of this chapter. If several people have
done closely related work in a different way, then the reasons for the selected approach should be
summarized here. Objective of the review is to learn what others have done to achieve similar goals
and to be able to justify your approach.

Projects which use computational techniques (for example neural networks, genetic algorithms,
simulations etc) to explore or extend the properties of a mathematical model or to make predictions of
some kind may have separate sections to cover the computational techniques themselves and the
area of application. Also, more effort on the literature research is desired in this case.

A good literature review is comprehensive; general trends and positions in the research area
should be identified, and the papers cited should be compared and contrasted. A literature review
should cover a range of material relevant to the project. Everything used should be cited by reference
to the bibliography at the end of the project study.

It is required that you cite several similar systems or modules and their characteristics. Compare
these existing systems from the system you are about to create. Are you offering an entirely different
one or just a replica of these systems? Are you able to conclude that your system is not at all inferior
and has something to offer in the body of knowledge.

Compare at the last part the difference of the proposed software to all cited literature/system in
the form of a matrix. From the reader’s point of view, a conclusion can be given by just taking a
glance of this matrix. The matrix should include all qualities of both the cited and proposed systems.

This chapter will consist of approximately 30 pages or more.

In a COMPUTERIZED LOAN ACCOUNT MONITORING SYSTEM, the following are examples of review of related
literature and related studies:

Related Literature
Software Engineering: A Practitioners Approach, 3rd ed. 1992, Roger S. Pressman – this book discusses the
basic steps in producing quality software, project planning and approach for real-time applications, considering that the
Loan Account Monitoring System operates on a real-time processing.
Computer Viruses and Data Protection, 1991, Ralf Burger – this book discusses approaches to network data
protection against viruses, considering network and data protection strategies to be developed in our Loan Account
Monitoring System.
Informatics Computer Networking 1997 - this book discusses the interconnectivity of each computer
components that provide ease of interaction among the networking components within a Local Area Network (LAN) set up
since the Loan Account Monitoring System of Quedancor NCR is connected to a network
Informatics Database Management System 1997 (DB212) - This book discusses the organization of files on a
storage device or on a database, how to keep the files secured from unauthorized access and the file integrity, and how
data is retrieved. Since the program to be developed is computerized, storing and retrieving of data is used on the NCR
office.
www.ccs.neu.edu/home/perrolle/book/chapter3.html - This web site includes the theory of Charles Babbage
on human labor relating it to computerization of work to hasten the generation of report.
http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~mezza/nur390/Mod3/sampling/lesson.html - this web site discus the sampling
technique used in this study, particularly the judgmental or purposive sampling technique.
www.helpforschools.com/sikb/reference/research_design.shtml - This web site discus the method of
research used in this dissertation. The qualitative, quantitative and the experimental research,

discus another theory on how computerization of work is much effective than the manual system.

Related Studies
A Thesis on Microlending by Robert Garrison, Aspen Institute, Washington, 1997 – the study discusses the
success of lending in the US and tackled models and approaches to an efficient monitoring system in lending. This study
will be useful in our approach in designing the Computerized Loan Account Monitoring System.
A Thesis on eDiliman.com A Computerized Government Transaction System by Marie June M. Fernandez,
Jeffrey P. Sabat and Michael Adelfo Tuason, UP Diliman, April 2001 – An implementation of the study done by Prof.
Paulo J. Paje on making a design that will computerize the Real Property of Tax System of a City Government. It is an
MIS project that does not only implement the design but also makes the computerization online. Further discuss
computerization without compromising government and internally regulated guidelines and procedures. It is useful in
enhancing the efficiency of a local government (like Quedancor) in providing service because it aims to make it online and
facilitate fast, efficient and accurate implementation services. The study aims to make the data secure since online and
users are given an interface that is not user friendly but also appealing. With the use of a database system, inquiry and
updating information will be faster, and maintaining files by hand is eliminated, accurate and up-to-date information is
available on demand and there is no need for maintaining voluminous paper files.
A Systems and Procedures Study on GSIS: Loans Administration Department I by John Philip Q. Carreon,
Ruth Y. Dicdican, Ruby Gisela G. Leyva and Flordeliz D. Saquing, UP Diliman, March 1991 – A study made to
establish and maintain up-to–date records of credit or loan accommodations granted in order to provide users with prompt
and accurate financial information. It keeps track of the financial status of accounts of individuals through maintenance of
up-to-date records and establish and maintain accounting ledgers of all loan accounts through the use of the personal
computer. It eliminates manual posting of new balances in the ledger and manual computation every time a payment.
Since manual updating of records takes a long time, other tasks are delayed. This study will be useful in our approach in
designing the Computerized Loan Account Monitoring System.
An Information System Study on the Loan Management Section of X-Lending Institution by Mylene
Magpili Luna, UP Diliman, April 1995 – a study and approach to strengthen the information system and create a better
internal control for the desired competitive edge. It provides information on clients’ past credit performance, monitor the
payments of client loans and provide information on the present status of clients’ current accounts. This study will be
useful in our approach in designing the Computerized Loan Account Monitoring System.
An Information System Study on the Credit Operations of JRM Corporation by Ramon U. Merino, UP
Diliman, Sept. 1990 – a study on practices and procedures that were established to efficiently run the operations JRM
Corporation. It discusses the practices and procedures that were established to efficiently run the operations. It mentioned
the increasing problem encountered because of increasing number of clients and transactions. It suggests
computerization of files so that computations can be handled efficiently, accurately and faster instead of the long and
tedious manual computation and retrieval of data can easily be done. This study will be useful in our approach in
designing the Computerized Loan Account Monitoring System.
An Information System Design Project Study Monthly Payroll by Rhoniel Aguirre, Angelle Barnachea,
Roselen Genove and Maria Celina Umagtang, UP Diliman, 1995 – a study whose objectives are making a process
highly computerized, transferring and accessing of all necessary information or documents are done electronically and
ensuring faster and safer data transfer. It aimed to store information on databases from storing information from file
cabinets. Further, it concluded that processing of information would be faster because of the use of computers and local
area networks. Human error in the computation and processing would be lessened because manipulation would be done
by application programs. It eliminates lost information or documents and inconsistency of data. This study will be useful in
our approach in designing the Computerized Loan Account Monitoring System.
