ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF THE ICT STUDENT AT BESTLINK COLLEGE


OF THE PHILIPPINES”

Introduction

In this era, the digital age becomes pervasive in our currently living in the world where
technology plays a big role for us human. Many of us adopt to fast changing world and
we benefited also. As we progress, many people explore many things in the digital world,
especially for the students, kids, teenagers and also some adult. Some middle aged person
and senior rarely give interest online games because of their age and their status.
According to Wikipedia, online games is a video game that is either partially or primarily
played through the internet or any other computer network available.

The design of online games can range from simple text based environment to the
incorporating complex graphics and virtual words. Online games can be found anywhere
it includes modern gaming platform such as PCs consoles and mobile devices, and span
many genre, including first- person shooters, MOBA strategy games and MMORPG
multiplayer online role playing game.

Online games are indeed entertaining to many players around the world because of its
visual and graphics display that attracts many people.

According to many people, game addiction is a big issue in our generation full of new
stuff to discover and explore, and now curiosity pulls in our fellow students to addiction
because of new games but one if the old but never gets old games is League of Legends.
This game is very famous among teenagers, the game is rated R because it has some adult
content not suitable for children like blood and violence which can influence the young
very easily or lead them to anxiety.

The game has grown at a very large state where many people may compete to win the
game which leads some people to violence who can’t accept defeat and blames the game
for being a bad player which leads now to what players call toxicity or toxic players.
Toxic players are the bad players (sometimes good) who says mean words to other
players to ruin their gameplay or sometimes because the player is really bad at the game
now many players had the anxiety to be “trash talked” or get the fear of being bullied or
receive mean words.
Background of the Study.

As the digital age emerges and online games started to attract many peoples, too many
issues and concerns were made. A twitter based group (Techaddictionca, 2014) says “

Despite not appearing in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental


Disorder(DSM), there has been growing concern about the people who appear to be
obsessed with video games and spend far too much playing.” Addiction to video games
is being considered for upcoming editions of DSM, but for not it recognized as an official
clinic problem. Regardless of its unofficial status, there is a little question that some
individuals (whether they are students, kids, teenagers, adult) play video games
excessively and that video game addiction can create problem in other important areas of
their lives.”

(Abbas, 2017) says in his research that unlike with substance abuse, the biological aspect
of video game addiction or online game addiction is uncertain. Many research suggest
gambling elevates dopamine, but there’s more to addiction that brain chemistry.
(Veracio, 2018) Despite the positive effects, parents frowned because of the potential on
the overuse of this technology which led to addiction by students. The dark side of
playing online games becomes an issue of debate in society. In addition, the author says

also “ a child who is conditioned to play computer games may find it difficult to socialize
with other child. This anti-social behavior can extends through adulthood, making it more
difficult for the adult respond to co – workers in an effective manner. This can be also
negatively affect relationships and friend ships causing a sense of loneliness

League of legends is a multiplayer online battle arena video games and one of the world’s
most popular video games developed and published by Riot Games. It features a team
based competitive game mode based on strategy and outlining opponents.
Conceptual Framework.

The figure was used to outline the possible result or to present a preferred
approach to the researcher’s study. The expectations of the researchers were
shown using the figure below. The researchers used a figure to explain clearly the
outcome what will result effects of addiction in league of legends in relation to
the academic performance of ICT student at Bestlink College of the Philippines.
Statement of the problem
The study aims to determine the effect of league of legends addiction in relation
to the academic performance of the ICT student in Bestlink College of the
Philippines. As a base of creating preventive measure to limit or to reduce the
addiction of the ICT student and to keep certain individual active on outdoor
game.

The researcher seeks to find the answers of the following:

2. What is the academic performance affecting the students by being addicted to

ICT student of Bestlink college of the Philippines?
Objectives of the study

Our objectives are to know how league of legends addiction affects our fellow,
we asked them a few questions and compiled them all, generally our fellow students
know the game League of Legends and some of them are familiar but don't play the
game. Most of our questions are about how this addiction affects their health, mental
state, sexual status and especially how it affects their academic performance. Most of
them are failing school because of severe addiction to the game but some of them can
manage their time to study and play at the same time, students tend to pass class after
they failed because they focused too much on playing the game leading to addiction then
they fail their class, but they work hard for their grades to pass.
Scope And Delimitations of the Study.

The statement of the problem states three possible problems that may affect the
respondents in their academic performance. The study focuses on the physical effects of
the respondents and in the affect in their academic performance. The study focuses on
issues and problems surrounding student of Bestlink College of the Philippines. This
research is limited conducted at the selected ICT student of the Bestlink College of the
Philippines year 2019-2020. The respondent of the study are 100 ICT students in two
grade level 11 and 12.

Using a questionnaire with 10 questions the researchers survey the

Definition of Term

Addiction

A mental state that allows the certain individual to repeatedly do the same thing over and
over at the long period of time affecting many aspects of the certain individual's life.

Academic Performance

A gradual or measurable grading achievement of a certain students that is based on their


academic grades.

Effects
The result of something made to be.
League of legends
is a multiplayer online battle arena video game developed and published by Riot
Games for Microsoft Windows and macOS.
Socialization
This way of interacting to the society and accepting the norms of it.

Online Games

A video game that is played through the internet or even LAN connections. It can be
played solo or multiplayer.

The study will help them to produce strategies on how to face the addiction of the student
in playing League of legends, online gaming. It will also be their basis for their future
researches as the current age of technology is progressing.

2.Profesors

The study will be their basis to use a specific strategy on how to deal with the said
problem. The study will also help the profesors to know the possible effects of League of
legends addiction in a certain student in different aspects.
3.Students
The study will help the students to know the possible effects of being addicted in playing
League of legends to their academic performance, social life, and health. In addition, the
study will help the students to get ideas that will improve them in the said aspects.

4.Future Researchers
This study will be useful for their future research as they relate their study in
online games. It will help them to get ideas that will help their research.
