What is wellbeing ?

Research shows that the elements


of well-being (Morale & Distress) are

workgroup or environment in which
each employee works .

Research shows that in terms of outcomes, better
wellbeing delivers :

• Higher staff retention


• Lower absenteeism
• Higher levels of discretionary effort and therefore
increased productivity
• Higher levels of evidence of harmony and absence of
negative behaviours – bullying, harassment etc

• Around 309,000 teachers in England took sickness
absence in 2009 (56% of workforce) National Office for
Statistics
• Stress is the predominant cause of work-related illness
in the education sector: 45% of all absence in education
is stress related (HSE)
• A survey, from the ATL , suggests 25% of teachers have
been bullied by another member of staff. (2011)
• 60% of teachers leave after their 4th year, most citing
the reason that it was simply too exhausting. (NUT
2006)
• Teacher absence costs over £500 million annually.
