WHAT IS?
Big Ben is the nickname of the biggest bell of
Westminster palace clock tower in gotic style.
The tower is 96m high and is one of the London
symbol with: Buckingham palace and tower
bridge.

THE HISTORY OF BIG BEN
It was built between 1843 and 1859 even if in
1856 there already was a first tower but it
crumbled because of an earthquake.
The first time the bells rang was in 1859 and
until the construction of Great Paul has been
the biggest ben of bitain isles

THE ORIGINS OF THE NAME
There are two theories that can explain the
name:
The first one says that the name derives from
the House of Commons member, Sir Benjamin
Hall; the second one claims that the name is
from the boxing champion Benjamin Caunt.

THE BIG BEN MUSIC
The bells of the tower compose a melody made
by William Crotch. He ispired by a religious
prhase. The music motif is possible to hear until
a distance of 2km.
