Greetings!
Welcome to the Diliman Debate Open 2021: Penetrate
the Circuit!

The University of the Philippines Debate Society (UPDS) is the official

representative of the University of the Philippines Diliman to local and
international tournaments and public speaking competitions. Having
established itself as a premiere debate institution throughout its 29
years, it continues to mark its legacy as it fulfills its mission of
increasing youth involvement and awareness on social issues.
With the same perseverance and passion, the organization will be
hosting the Diliman Debate Open 2021 (DDO), its main flagship
intervarsity, with the theme, “Penetrate the Circuit.” While relatively
new online, DDO delivered a climatic experience as it opened its reach
to international borders last year. This year is no different, and we are
willing to go Down Under. Following the Australs Format, this year’s
DDO aims to penetrate debate circuits all over the globe to convene in
spaces to talk about pressing social issues, provide an avenue for
critical thinking and discourse, and cultivate the art of public speaking
and argumentation. Bold debaters will vie for the prestigious
championship this December 11 to 12.
In line with this, we invite you to take part in our endeavor as an official
DDO 2021 partner. We firmly believe your participation in this event will
be a meaningful opportunity to engage with the brightest minds not
only in the Philippines but with the entire international debate
community. Let us #PenetrateTheCircuit with DDO 2021 and extend
the stimulative experience of debate to those who dare.

 ABOUT THE
EVENT
The Diliman Debate Open (DDO) is the organization’s main
flagship intervarsity, fostering the competitive spirit among
different debaters and adjudicators while preparing them for
Nationals. While relatively new, it has attracted an average of
300 participants per year during physical tournaments. As it
transitioned online last year, it started to open its borders to
international debate circuits whilst providing the same
competitiveness in terms of giving the best tournament
experience.

DDO prides itself on its rich quality of debaters and judges all
over the Philippines in providing high-level debates, critical
discourse, and extensive discussion on social issues. Opening
its borders last year has only amplified its traction to the
global debating community garnering participants all over
Asia and the rest of the world.

With the goal of giving the best tournament experience, DDO

2021 commits to being inclusive and accessible to different
participants all over the globe and manifests the passion for
debating by providing spaces where healthy discourse and
competition can co-exist.
WHO WE ARE
The University of the Philippines Debate Society (UPDS) is a
nonstock, non-profit, socio-civic organization; and the
official representative of UP Diliman in local and
international debate and public speaking competitions. With
over 50+ resident members and 250+ alumni, the debate
varsity continues to be one of the most prestigious debating
organizations in the country and Asia.

Founded in 1993, the UP Debate Society has since

established itself at the forefront of debate and
argumentation in the Philippines and Asia, in pursuit of its
goal of championing critical reasoning and discourse. The
UPDS is home to 13 National Championships and the 2013
Asian Championship. In the past year alone, our members
amassed 23 championships, 13 overall best speakers, 14
finals best speakers, 24 finals judges, and 6 overall best
judges all across the world.

Now in our 29th year, we continue our mission to increase

youth involvement in issues through debate education even
amidst the pandemic. Recently, we have successfully
hosted the first-ever online national collegiate debate
competition in the Philippines, the Philippine Intercollegiate
Debating Championship (PIDC). As one of our flagship
events, Diliman Debate Open allows the UPDS and our
partners to forward certain advocacies that the international
debate and the UP Diliman student community can support.
PAST EVENTS
Diliman Debate Open 2020 Pre-ABP:
Be on Top
DDO 2020 was branded as a pre-Asian British Parliamentary
(ABP) tournament in preparation for the prestigious Asian
competition. Last year’s edition of the flagship debate
intervarsity became worldwide as the event had participants
not only from the Philippines but from international debate
communities as well.

PIDC 2021: Rebuild Connections

PIDC 2021 became the biggest debate majors competition in
the country as it was participated by over 400 debaters and
adjudicators from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Issues Forum 2021

Issues Forum 2021 is a series of talks that sought to widen
the horizons of the Filipino youth through an open forum and
panel discussion with the current prominent leaders in the
country
