UNIT-I

1(a) Discuss the concepts of GMR & GMD

(b) In a single phase line (See Fig.), conductors a and a’ in parallel form one circuit
while conductors b and b’ in parallel form the return path. Calculate the total
inductance of the line per km assuming that current is equally shared by the two
parallel conductors. Conductor diameter in 2·0 cm

2. (a)Develop the equation of inductance for single phase lines.

(b) Find the loop inductance and reactance per Km of a single phase overhead
line consisting of two conductors, each 1.25cm diameter. The spacing between
conductors is 1m and frequency is 50Hz.

3(a) Explain the following conductors

(i) Solid (ii) Stranded (iii) Bundled
(b) Illustrate the effect of earth on capacitance of single phase Transmission line.

4.The following Fig. shows the spacing of a double circuit 3-phase overhead
line. The phase sequence is ABC and the line is completely transposed. The
conductor radius in 1·3 cm. Find the inductance per phase per km

5. Calculate the sag of a conductor when (i) supports are at equal levels and (ii)
Supports are at unequal levels.
6(a) A single 3-phase line operated at 50Hz is arranged as shown in the fig. The
conductor diameter is 8 mm and the line is regularly transposed. Determine the
inductance and capacitance per Km.

(b) Demonstrate the constructional details of pressure cables with neat diagram
7.Develop the flux linkages of a conductor due to internal and external fluxes.

8.Derive an equation of inductance for 3-phase overhead lines with

(i) Symmetrical spacing (ii)Unsymmetrical spacing

9. Demonstrate the concept of skin & Proximity effects.

10. Derive the capacitance equation for single phase lines.

11. A 132 kV transmission line has the following data :

Wt. of conductor = 680 kg/km ; Length of span = 260 m
Ultimate strength = 3100 kg ; Safety factor = 2
Calculate the height above ground at which the conductor should be supported.
Ground clearance required is 10 meters.

12. Calculate the inductance of each conductor in a 3-phase, 3-wire system when
the conductors are arranged in a horizontal plane with spacing such that D 31 = 4 m;
D12 = D23 = 2m. The conductors are transposed and have a diameter of 2·5 cm.
