a UNESCO World Heritage Site.”

“Next picture, can you see it?” “The Butuan Silver Paleograph,
Ma’am.”

“And also known as the "Butuan Silver Strip" can “ It is a piece of metal with inscriptions

by a team of archaeologists from the
National Museum of the Philippines,
Ma’am.”

“Who discovered this piece of metal?” “The Treasure hunters who were
looking for old ceramics and gold
ornaments discovered this metal strip
inside a wooden coffin. Ma’am”

“Yes! And Coffins of the same type, dating

back to the 14th and 15th centuries, were found at
the site. According to Dr. Jesus Peralta, found
inside were human remains with artificially
deformed skulls - a practice in this region limited
to Southern Philippines and unpopular in Luzon.
Due to the similarities found between the coffins,
it is reasonable for archaeologists to assume that
the latter came from that same era. Debate,
however, arose regarding the origin of the said
artifact, but until now, it is considered to belong to
Butuan where it was found. Dr. Boechari of
Indonesia, said Peralta, identified the writings as
very close to a Javanese script that existed from
the 12th to the 15th century. This
yet-to-be-deciphered Butuan palaeograph is now
in the hands of Proceso Gonzales, the city
engineer of Butuan.

“Let’s proceed to the next picture, what can you “It is The Butuan Ivory Seal or BIS,

Norte in southern Philippines, Ma’am.”

“Engraved on the seal is the word Butban in

stylized Kawi. Butban was presumed to stand for
Butuan. The ivory seal is now housed at the
National Museum of the Philippines.”

“And the last picture, what can you see.? “Balangay, Ma’am.”

“And Also spelled barangay, can you described it “It is a type of lashed-lug boat built by
and where they also found it?” joining planks edge-to-edge using pins,

found throughout the Philippines and
were used largely as trading ships up
until the colonial era, Ma’am.”

“This also the oldest known balangay are the

Butuan boats, which have been carbon-dated to
320 AD and were recovered from several sites in
Butuan, Agusan del Norte.”

“Balangay were the first wooden watercraft

excavated in Southeast Asia. Balangay are
celebrated annually in the Balanghai Festival of
Butuan City.”

“And these are the objects that give us a glimpse

of how our ancestors have lived in the past. They
reveal the important characteristics that help us
piece together our history, heritage, and culture.”

LEARNING ACTIVITY

A. Choose one (1) among the six (6) suggested topic above. Make a detailed
lesson plan about the topic integrate an art either drawing (hatching) or
painting.

“Philippine Artifacts”

B. What teaching strategy and assessment did you include in your plan?

 Cooperative learning, wherein it gives students the opportunity

to work with others and see different points of view. Students
learn more effectively when working together rather than apart,
and it is also known to improve self-confidence in students.
 Inquiry-based learning implies involving students in the
learning process so they will have a deeper understanding of
what they are learning.
