Topic: School children are becoming far too dependent on computers.

This is having an
alarming effect on reading and writing skills. Teachers need to avoid using computers in the
classroom at all costs and go back to teaching basic study skills. Do you agree or disagree?
Essay:
Nowadays, technological advances and their far-reaching applications are having
significant impacts on numerous aspects of life, including education. Electronic devices,
especially computers, are presumed to have serious drawbacks on students, namely the
deficiency in reading and writing skills. From my standpoint, however; computers should not be
underestimated given its plenty of advantages brought about for both pupils and teachers.
First, computers can provide a lot of beneficial tools, and programmes, which assist
students in dramatically enhancing reading and writing skills. For example, when students write
essays on computers, Microsoft Word can find out spelling mistakes, whereas online dictionaries
on computers will give children a variety of synonyms which make essays become more vivid
and attractive as well as expand their range of vocabulary. Thus, if children utilize computers
and their great applications proficiently and properly, they will be more skillful in writing and
reading skills.
Second, students can make knowledge acquisition become less laborious and time-
consuming. Before the advent of computers in learning institutions, students had to allocate time
finding suitable books in the libraries or bookshops and then go through large volumn of
information to complete their homework. Currently, with computers, students can gain access to
plenty of information just by typing and clicking. Besides, students can possess useful practical
skills through the process of using computer comprising creating presentations, learning to
differentiate reliable from unreliable sources on the Internet, maintaining proper online etiquette,
and writing emails. These are crucial skills needed in everyday life and in workplace.
Third, the use of computers in classrooms can improve engagement of the being
educated. When technology is integrated into lessons, they will make learning process be more
captivating by permitting educators to teach the same thing by more effective ways. For instance,
there are a variety of programs available namely Powerpoint, Excel and Edraw Mind Map that
can expand teachers’ capacity to create and deliver teaching through engaging papers,
presentations, graphics, and gamification. Thereby, students will be more intrigued and pay more
attention to the lessons, thus produce much more desirable learning outcomes.
To conclude, computers when being utilized in schooling produce adverse and beneficial
effects at once, nonetheless; I have to reaffirm my standpoint that computers should be more
widely applied in education on the grounds of its benefits outweigh its disadvantages.
