Dear Esteemed Delegates,

My name is Pearling and I’ll serve as your Secretary-General in Comfort Model United Nations
2020. Our conference will be held on 11th -12th July 2020, from the comfort of your home. We
expect a high commitment from you to attend the conference you’ve signed up for.
Second to that, I would like to congratulate you for your high enthusiasm for participating in
the Comfort Model United Nations 2020. I’m beyond honoured to have you in this conference!

In Comfort Model United Nations, we believe confidence comes when people are comfortable
with themselves. We want to bring more capable and potential youngsters to work on and
practice diplomacy so they can become the future leaders who're ready to face the global issues
and contribute to it. We focus on providing value and quality over prioritizing numbers and
metrics.

Comfort Model United Nations is committed to give care for its people, value their time and
opinions as well as providing the best outcomes, so delegates get to experience the best virtual
Model United Nations ever.

Our conference will be held via zoom and google meets, google meets will be used for
ceremonies and zoom for committee session. By using streamlined video conferencing
platforms such as Zoom, we aim to make Model United Nations more accessible towards
delegates of all corners of the globe. Also, our team is ready to assist or help you in case of
emergency!

By this letter, as a Secretary-General, I promise to ensure you leave with a big smile, bunch of
new friends, better knowledge and understanding, also experience worth-remembering. I look

What is Model United Nations?
Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the United Nations where students play the
role of delegates from different countries and attempt to solve real world issues with the
policies and perspectives of their assigned country.

Background Guide
A Background Guide is a very important document that is presented to delegates before a
conference that catalyses conference preparation. It holds the information that the Board of
Dais expect delegates to discuss during the conference.

▪ Size 12 Time New Roman Font
▪ Sources should be cited underneath the position paper (superscript is in order)

POSITION PAPER GUIDELINES


Heading: Committee, Topic, Country, Logo (optional)

1. Topic Background
Definition of the topic, address your urgency (why this topic is important to be discussed).

2. Past International Action


The most important UN resolutions and treaties on the topic, Non-Governmental
Organizations (NGOs) contribution.

3. Country Policy
Types of policies that will be adopt (or not adopt) on this topic, Restrictions.

4. Possible Solutions
Specific plans to undertake the issue (eligible solutions for all Member states, include the
system on how to make it works.

Code of Conduct
▪ Hate, bullying, discrimination, and harassment in any form will not be tolerated.
▪ Delegates must always respect each other’s.

If delegates violated one of the Code of Conduct, the Board of Dais holds the rights to
suspend the delegates from one conference meetings or expel them from the conference.

Online Meeting Setting


• Always pay attention to what your chairs state or say!
• Raise placard = Raise hand feature in zoom
• Do not exit and enter whenever you want, notify the chair first.
• Break out room = means of negotiation → ask the chair permission
• If you’re not speaking, please mute yourself.
• Always turn on your video at least during speech.
• Lower down your hand, don’t leave a residual hand.
Electronic Policy
During committee sessions, electronics are allowed for brief research, taking notes, sending
messages to delegates and staff and writing Working and Resolution Papers only. This is to
ensure all delegates would be actively engaging in debate and not doing something that isn’t
debate-related.

General Model United Nations Terms


• Blocs is a group of countries who band together on the basis of similar ideas and
solutions of a topic. A bloc would discuss common ideas and draft a resolution paper
in the latter half of the debate.
• Decorum is warning impose to remind delegate to stay conducive.
• Delegate is a single person who is part of a delegation that represents an entity, usually
a country.
• Motion is an action proposed by a delegate to debate a topic’s specific aspect.
