Module 11: Assignment 1

1BSA-ABM5. Prof. Lilibeth Cruz

1. Analyze the sociopolitical climate in the Philippines in the 21st century and identify the
“real calamity that exceeds all others ” that hampers Philippine development.

We recognize the risks and obstacles every time a tragedy strikes and devastates our
communities. We look for alternatives and expert guidance, but the greater issue is following
the advice and taking the necessary steps. With regards to these circumstances, we are
waiting for the government response to solve these issues, but the question is “ Do they take
an action about this matter?”. Does the government have plans to solve these sociopolitical
conflicts when it comes to environmental concerns?

Based on the reading that I’ve read that calamities in the Philippines were matter-of-factly
or in a distressed tone which means that our country is prone to various kinds of
environmental phenomena. Since we are prone to these calamities, therefore there should be
a plan to prevent some damages or casualties that may happen. However, even before, the
Spanish government’s action was very selfish and corrupt and they ignored those concerns.

In addition to this matter, the economic policies before were inhuman and unreasonable
because of those Spaniards elites' actions and the implementation of polo y Servicio that
mandated the works of Filipino citizens, and they were required to pay a huge amount of
taxes. Due to this force laboring policy, Rizal believed that the cause of indolence was this
law. Also, the privilege of the elites who enjoying used the benefits of that kind of
regulations, meanwhile the vast group of workers who were suffering because of lack of
help and compensation with regards to their concerns such as agriculture’s needs.

Aside from regulations that hamper the development of the country, the Philippines’
structural complex. The causes of social dysfunction can be traced back to the fundamental
causes. The Philippines’ primarily rural economy, agricultural, and service-based, has a
unique structure, but the productivity of workers has a poor level.

Hence, as a student, I believed that the essay was not exactly about environmental concern
but the government’s response to it like Spaniards. The ilustrados used the idealization of
climate concerns as a discursive political strategy. I also believed that the essay shows the
treatment of government and its wrong governance just like before that Spaniard's
government only took an action when they will be benefitted. In short, the real calamity of
this topic is the bad governance itself, and nowadays the election is coming and we, the
people of the Republic of the Philippines, will again choose a leader that will help us
throughout the 6 years of leading this nation, and from this point of my life, I will wisely
choose a leader that will design a system that will concern about humanity and society's
development.

2. Outline and analyze Rizal’s abandonment of assimilation. What led to Rizal’s shift in
ideology? Was this shift justifiable?

In the 19th century, there was a propaganda movement known as La Solidaridad that was
led by Filipino elites and the first Filipino nationalist movement that had the purpose to
create reforms in the Philippines such as individual rights, constitutionalism, and
anticlericalism or opposition to the clergy. However, despite having a purpose, Graciano
Lopez Jaena and Jose Rizal withdraw from La Solidaridad, because according to historians
that Rizal could not lead an organization without cooperation or solidarity in work, in
addition to the conflict between him and Del Pilar. Also, the disagreement and difference in
ideals and aspirations of the members, especially the three of them, lead to their separation.

Furthermore, the movement failed to reach out and engage with the wider population of
Filipinos to cooperate with their goals. In addition that the Spanish Cortes was taken away,
even though it will be a huge help for the movement to proceed on their goals and voice out
their concerns about the Spain-Philippines relationship. Also, the lack of important progress
in the campaign became evidence of their obvious failure.

Due to these circumstances, Rizal decided to shift in ideology. He formed a group called
La Liga Filipina where that has a purpose to have mutual protection. They will defend all
the victims of injustices, promote instruction and education among Filipinos. Unfortunately,
just like the characters in the El Filibusterismo, they also failed.

To sum up, the ideas above, if I were Jose Rizal I will also do the same thing and leave
a circle that will cause a fire and conflicts because instead of fighting together to achieve the
same goal, we will fight to each other and argue all the time to prove that our different
ideologies and philosophies are right. I have a sense of something high level of
conscientiousness and openness to do something that will lead me to think critically and
have a rational explanation of what I’m doing just like Jose Rizal.
