Referenced procedures:

09-10-00 Towing

CAUTION: Tow-bar-less tugs apply towing loads through the oleo assembly instead of the nose landing
gear casing to the trunnion. When using this type of tug, avoid quick starts and stops. The
airplane steering system must be disconnected, nose gear oleo extension must be checked
to make sure of centering cam disengagement, and the winch strap must be just below the
normal towing lugs to make sure of the proper strut loading. Make sure that during towing
operations the winch strap does not damage the grease nipple just below the towing lugs. It
is also important to only use the tug manufacturers recommended fuses on these units.

The aircraft can be towed or pushed using a towbar (Ref. 09-10-00). For radius of turns, see Figure 1.
Before the aircraft is towed or pushed, disconnect the nosewheel steering sleeve from the torque link
sleeve on the leg assembly by removing the steering disconnect pin. Use steering arm
(Part. No. 25Y513A) for manoeuvring by hand.

The recommended maximum towing speed for the aircraft under normal conditions is 5 mph (8 kph). The
gradient should not exceed more than 1 in 5 (11.3 degrees).

When an aircraft is towed, a competent operator must be in the flight compartment to operate the brakes.
Before towing operations start, efficient liaison must be established between the tractor driver and the
brake operator.

Taxiing instructions are given in the Aircrew Manual.

TOWING

1. To tow the airplane (Figure 1)

Equipment and materials:

Equipment/Material Part/Item No.

Towbar 259Y31

A. Procedure

CAUTION: Tow-bar-less tugs apply towing loads through the oleo assembly instead of the nose landing
gear casing to the trunnion. When using this type of tug, avoid quick starts and stops. The
airplane steering system must be disconnected, nose gear oleo extension must be checked
to make sure of the centtering cam disengagement, and the winch strap must be just below
the normal towing lugs to make sure of the proper strut loading. Make sure that during towing
operations the winch strap does not damage the grease nipple just below the towing lugs. It
is also important to only use the tug manufacturers recommended fuses on these units.

(1) Make sure that the nose and main gear locking pins are installed.

(2) Disconnect the quick release pin and remove the steering disconnect pin.

(3) Attach towbar to torque link sleeve by inserting the steering disconnect pin in the tow position of
the sleeve. Turn towbar safety catch to lock disconnect pin.

(4) Connect the towbar to the tractor.

(5) Make sure that a competent brake operator is in the flight compartment.

(6) Make sure that an observer is at each wing tip. If the airplane is being pushed, make sure that
an observer is at the rear of the airplane.

(7) Make sure that the brake operator and the tractor driver can communicate with each other.

(8) In the rear equipment bay, make sure that a minimum pressure of 2000 psi is indicated on the
emergency brake accumulator gauge. If necessary, use the hydraulic handpump to increase the
pressure.

(9) Set the handbrake lever to the emergency position.

(10) If required, switch on the navigation lights.

(11) Close the entry door.

(12) Tow the airplane steadily at a speed not more than 5 mph (8 kph).

(13) When the airplane is at the parking position, centralize the nose gear. Make sure that a minimum
pressure of 2000 psi (138 bar) is indicated on the emergency brake accumulator gauge. If

necessary, use the hydraulic handpump to increase the pressure. Set the handbrake lever to
PARK. Position the chocks at the front and rear of the main and nose gear wheels.

(14) Disconnect the towbar. Insert disconnect pin through torque link sleeve and steering sleeve; lock
the disconnect pin by inserting the quick-release pin through the counterbored 0.25 inch
diameter hole in the forward face of the torque link sleeve. Make sure that the quick-release pin
is locked in position with the indicator groove exposed and level with the head (Figure 1).

If a pattern type towbar is used for towing which does not provide a catch to retain the steering
disconnect pin, the disconnect pin should be retained by the use of the quick release pin.
