Discussion Assignment

In an attempt to answer this question, I will like to break it into four sections;

 What is collaborate learning?


 What are the benefits of collaborative learning?
 How does University of the People integrate community-oriented learning into the classroom?
 In your response, be sure to share any experience you have with collaborative learning.

What is collaborative learning?


Collaborative learning is an educational approach to teaching and learning that involves groups of students
working together to solve a problem, complete a task, or create a product.

What are the benefits of collaborative learning?


It brings out the unique strengths of each individual student while strengthening the work of the group through
teamwork, cooperation and combined effort and resources. It also help to develop strong communication skill
and confidence working with colleagues from different cultures and backgrounds-, which is more than ever for
professionals entering the global workforce.
It helps to develop teamwork and cooperation.
It can also be helpful in its ability to expose students to diversity. The student body at University of the People
is diverse in many ways and has students from all over the world. Through working collaboratively, students
may come to better understand of one another culturally, personally, and as thinkers. In-group settings, our
ideas are often challenged, and this is precisely when they grow. By sharing thoughts, struggles, concerns,
ideas, criticisms and support, students can push their work further than they may have been able to do alone.

How does University of the People integrate community-oriented learning into the classroom?
University of the People integrate community-oriented learning into the classroom through class discussion
forum and peer assessment in which students, as well as the course instructor can raise issues, and questions
relating to course material. Instructors monitor the class forum, making this an excellent place to voice
concerns, share inights, develop relationships with instructors and peers, and get help with any challenges one is
facing with the course material.

In your response, be sure to share any experience you have with collaborative learning.

I could remember when I was in secondary school our Agricultural science teacher assign a portion of land to us
to cultivate maize and he grouped us 5 each and at the end of the term he graded us. The beauty of it was the
fact that some us that do not have good knowledge of farming learnt through that process of collaborative
assignment.

For me, there are a lot of benefits from collaborative learning. With collaborative learning, we, as students, can
improve our teamwork quality. It grows our awareness of social interaction, makes us realize the meaning of
learning, and makes us actively involved with our tasks. It makes us appreciate and tolerate others' opinions or
comebacks, improve our critical thinking, and develop personal responsibility. Through collaborative learning, it
can increase our confidence in our ability to think by ourselves, find information from many sources, and learn
from other students.
I think I get a lot of good experience after having my first course. To learn something not just with my own
opinion but by others too, evaluate others' work simultaneously, which gives me a lot of new information and
something I need to be cautious about.
I think that the University of the People integrates community-oriented learning by allowing us to work
together by collaborative learning. The learning process is a process of social interaction between students.
In my experience, when I was still in high school, it was much more into learning and knowing only from the
teacher or instructor, which made other students quite competitive with each other, including me.
It is something new to me since I have always studied individually, but now, peer-to-peer learning gives me a
different view. It makes me consider many things since I communicate with others in the task many times. It
improves my self-awareness, pushing me not to alienate myself when it comes to learning. It motivates me and
makes me willing to accept others' remarks.

1. Collaborative learning can occur peer-to-peer or in larger groups. Research shows that educational
experiences that are
active, social, contextual, engaging, and student-owned lead to deeper learning. The benefits of collaborative
learning
include:

* Development of higher-level thinking, oral communication, self-management, and leadership skills.


*Promotion of student-faculty interaction.
*Increase in student retention, self-esteem, and responsibility.
*Exposure to and an increase in understanding of diverse perspectives.
*Preparation for real life social and employment situations.
In 2019, when my friends and I were about to write our national exam, we camp at a house to be able to work
together and collaborate as a team to have a successful result which we did.
Beside that in 2020, When I was learning basic computer programs, we created a whatsapp group page were
we interact with each other about the course. This can be done by posting, commenting and asking peer.

University of the integrate collaborating learning by the following means:


* They create a Discussion forum where students post, comments and ask their peer about things that are not
understandable
on each other work.
* Students also have to correct and grade their peer work.

In my opinion, there are many positive impacts of collaborative learning. I believe studying in groups can
improve communication skills, critical thinking, and leadership skills. But it can also improve the class's learning
process by making it more engaging and active. For example, I used to join an English language course in the
British Council a few years ago. In my class, there were around 20 classmates studying together at the
Intermediate level. During the class, we were often put in groups to discuss the specific topic, or practice
speaking skills. Sometimes, we are even put in small groups to play grammar and vocabulary games or even
solve issues. There were also weekly assignments that I must work together with a number of classmates. By
working in a group, I feel more relaxed and comfortable talking to other classmates and create positive
attitudes towards teachers and classmates. At the same time, I found the classroom has lots of interaction
which makes the class more interesting. As a result, I felt motivated throughout the class and I was always
excited to go to the classroom. When I work with a group of students for assignments, we share our ideas and
thinking on particular issues. This helped me increase the understanding of each classmate's diverse
backgrounds, cultures, and unique abilities. In addition, I realized that many of the students were involved
more actively in the learning process compared to other classes I have attended before. In the university of the
people, learning methods are designed to center on students rather than on instructors. During the classroom,
students are provided with opportunities to work together throughout the learning process. In the discussion
forum, students can discuss topics and ask questions each week. On top of that, the University of the People
uses a system called peer assessments. In this system, students are required to review the three peer students'
assignments and provide grades for the discussion assignments while his/her work is also being reviewed by
other classmates. Since the University of the People learning methods is centered on community, students are
allowed to give helpful feedback, exchange perspectives, make decisions, and learn from each other during the
class.
