1600’s
● 1635 First school- on April 23 the first school building was created in
Boston.
● 1636 Harvard- Harvard opened
● 1642 Law for reading and writing- The first law in New World
requiring children to be taught to read and write.
● 1642 Compulsory Education Law- The parents were required to
provide children with basic education. They had to teach them
reading, writing, and the colony’s capitol law.
1700’s
● Philadelphia Academy- A private secondary school opened in 1751.
Benjamin Franklin prompted and designed it. It was more focused on
the English language and it was considered more practical.
● New study introduced- Arithmetic was introduced while Latin and
Greek were the principle studies.
● Ursuline Academy of New Orleans- The academy was founded,
becoming the oldest Catholic school.
● Noah Webster- He wrote about the importance of the language being
used with spelling and grammar.
1800’s
● Department of education- It was created to help states create a school
system that would be more effective. They ended up collecting
information on schools.
 ● Horace Mann- was elected secretary of the board of education.
● Common schools- A movement created so children could receive
basic education.
● Morrill Land Grant Acts- It allowed creation of land grant colleges. It
helped fund colleges.
● Troy Seminary- One of the first women’s colleges.
1900’s
● G.I. Bill of Rights- It helped provide tuition payments for veterans.
● Education of Handicapped Children Act - children with disabilities
got specific rights to education.
● Brown Vs Board of education- Racial segregation that was occuring
in schools was ruled as unconstitutional. Movement that
acknowledged the unfair and divided education being given based on
race.
● Bilingual Act- Act created to help students with limited understanding
of English.
2000’s
● Common Core- The common core standards were released. They were
released for English language arts and math.
● 2001 No child left behind- Created to hold schools accountable. Made
sure that schools helped students increase their performance. The
students were from multiple groups such as minorities and English
learners.
● 2003 International Association - organization to enhance online
learning.
● 2002 NAREA - helped give rights to children in early education.
