GRADE 11 – UNIT 5 – GETTING STARTED

Name:__________ Class:_____ Date:____________

Unit 5: Being part of Asean

HANDOUT

IV. LET’S GO FURTHER

Reading text:

Daughter: Daddy, my assignment today is about the development of ASEAN. I’m very
content that Vietnam is a member of this bloc.

Dad: Well, Vietnam has changed dramatically since we joined this bloc on 28 July
1995. Have you found out what ASEAN stands for?

Daughter: Yes, dad. I’ve got it. It stands for Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
There are 11 countries in Southeast Asia but only 10 belong to this bloc.

Dad: Right! The group’s 5 original member states Indonesia, Malaysia, The
Philippines, Singapore and Thailand founded ASEAN in 1967. Joining
ASEAN had crucial social, political, economic and security implications for
Vietnam. Vietnam’s membership of the group integrated its security with the
whole of Southeast Asia and created a favourable environment for economic
development. This, in turn, raised Vietnam’s global image, leading to
increased cooperation with multiple players in the region and greater
bargaining clout with superpowers like the United States and China.

Daughter: Yes, but dad, Vietnam hasn’t been the largest economy in ASEAN yet.

Dad: As you know, Vietnam is a small country, so we have to keep trying a lot.
Indonesia has the largest economy in ASEAN and has been among the
largest economies in Asia.

Daughter: Well, I, a representative of the Vietnamese youth, will try our best to
develop our nation’s economy.
