Genuine boar bristle hairbrushes have benefits for fine and
normal hair. The scaled bristles help move dirt and debris
off the hair shaft while helping distribute oil away from
the scalp towards the ends. For fine delicate hair, choose
the softest bristles you can find. If your hair is on the thick
side, nylon bristles are a better choice. To clean your bristle
brush, remove hair with a wide-toothed comb, before
shampooing the brush. Squeeze out any water that may
become trapped underneath the rubber pad and wipe the
bristles dry with a towel. Repeat every week or two.

that’s developed into everything I’m currently
fulfilling. As an action-orientated person, my eyes
and ears are constantly open for opportunities, and
the chance came for me to move from KZN to Cape
Town in 2014.
‘Realising that I found it difficult to access
support and counselling for my diagnosis was the
major factor in going public. I recognised that if
I, as a middle-class suburban mom, was unable
to get the required services, then surely the
experience was worse for people from less fortunate
communities.
‘I felt that speaking openly about the condition
could help others to do the same. I wanted to help
put an end to the stereotype that white middleclass
people aren’t affected by the virus. I remember
when I initially started with the public speaking,
many people, black men especially, were in disbelief
that I was HIV positive. They’d often tell me that
I couldn’t be HIV positive, because I’m a white
woman. I felt this would sometimes make them
sceptical and didn’t take me seriously when I gave
my talks. So much so that I started keeping my
medication and website details close by just so I
could confirm it.
‘Since my diagnosis, I’ve been afflicted with
numerous health challenges related to my HIV
status, including a heart attack and double bypass
in 2018. But I’ve never been depressed or felt like
it was the end of the world. I have my resilience to
thank for that. I told myself that I can’t turn back
time, and I need to just face the challenges as they
arise and look forward to the future.’

Staying optimistic
‘I’m fortunate to be surrounded by supportive family,
friends and associates who are always rooting for
me, which keeps me going and helps me to spread
positivity through educating others. I speak on
several platforms and travel around the country
to encourage others to live positive lives and be
supportive of HIV-positive individuals. I’ve authored
two books about my experiences and currently host
a TV show on a community station in Cape Town.
‘I always encourage people to open up to at least
one person in their lives and shouldn’t be afraid to
ask for help. Thinking you can deal with issues on
your own sets you back. I’ve had many cases where
had I been too proud to ask for help, things would
not have worked out in my favour. No man is an
island; we all need someone to lean on. And that’s
how I’ve been able to live a full and happy life and
have continued to flourish even after adversity.’

AVOID A BAD DIET
Once again, what we put in our mouths plays a huge
impact on our overall state of wellbeing. According to
Health.harvard.edu, the build-up of cholesterol plaques
in the brain can damage brain tissue, as brain cells are
deprived of oxygen-rich blood they need to function
optimally. In the long run, this can affect thinking and
memory. Make sure your diet consists of fresh fruit,
vegetables, fish, good fats like those found in avocados
and coconut oil, and wholegrains.

Understanding
what it means
to be triggered
BEING ‘TRIGGERED’ HAS BECOME A POPULAR
INTERNET PHRASE, BUT FROM A MENTAL HEALTH
PERSPECTIVE, TRIGGERING HAS SERIOUS LINKS
TO EMOTIONAL TRAUMA

Y
ou may have come across people on Twitter or Facebook joking about
being triggered, or using it as slang for anything they find mildly annoys
or offends them. For instance, a gaudily decorated room or a comically
unfashionable outfit might elicit replies like, ‘This hurts my eyes! I’m triggered!’.
You might also have come across genuine ‘trigger warnings’ at the start of
articles or videos, which let you know they contain sensitive information or
images.
The true meaning of the word, when used in relation to mental health, is
worth understanding, and is rooted in emotional trauma. Dr Marshinee Naidoo,
a psychiatrist practising at Akeso Alberton, explains what being triggered
means and how to handle the experience.

PTSD DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA What does it mean to be triggered?

‘To be triggered is to have an intense emotional or physical reaction, such as

‘In PTSD, the body’s response system doesn’t know when to shut off, and
the brain doesn’t process the trauma the right way. It doesn’t file the memory
of the event as being in the past, which results in feelings of stress and fear

She makes sure her presence is felt by the whole school, including her

healthy friendship dynamics are.
