1 Getting Started
This chapter describes how to start and begin using the NEXIO® FCP
Integration Gateway.
Overview The FCP Integration Gateway allows third party video editors and
browsers to connect to the NEXIO server system as though it were a
network share. From this network share, editors and browsers can play
media from the NEXIO RAID set in file formats preferred by the third party
applications.
This will launch the LLM and the CIFS Server application.
1 Verify that the LLM displays all of the server nodes connected to the
NEXIO system as well as a proper logical disk (as per your NEXIO system
configuration).
The CIFS Server Application will show STATUS: Ready once it has
properly indexed the database and is ready to accept client connections.
20 Chapter 1

Listing Clips
1 In the View menu on the CIFS Server application, select List Clips.
With the LLM and CIFS Server Application running and set properly, you
are ready to connect a client computer to the Gateway.
Bandwidth and Due to the variations in hardware and software that Harris doesn’t control,
Harris does not guarantee real time playback from NEXIO through the
Client Mac client. If the sequence is completely rendered and all content is on
the Mac client, then it’s completely up to the Mac to play it out.
Connectivity
With the 2.1 release of the FCP Integration Gateway, you can connect up
to 7 clients per Gateway.
The recommended number of Final Cut Pro workstations that you should
use simultaneously depends on the video format and bitrate that you are
working with.
32 Chapter 1
Getting Started
Figure 1-4 shows the total number of video streams that can pass through
a single NX1000FCP to the attached Final Cut Pro client machines. The
total number of streams is affected by bit rate and the number of FCP
clients connected.

Limiting Client Since the number of available video streams through the FCP Integration
Bandwidth in Final Gateway is not limited on a per client basis, by default, any one client may
Cut Pro use as many video streams as are available through the NX1000FCP/
NX1010FCP. Therefore (especially when connecting the maximum number
of clients to the NX1000FCP/NX1010FCP) it is necessary to use the
settings in Apple's Final Cut Pro application to limit the real-time streams
for each individual Final Cut Pro workstation. By doing this, you can
ensure that no one client will ever take more bandwidth (or play more
streams) than any other FCP workstation.
34 Chapter 1
Getting Started
5 Next, go to the Final Cut Pro menu and select User Preferences.
6 In the User Preferences window, select the General tab and select Limit
real-time video to.

7 Once you have made this selection, you will have the option to enter a
maximum bandwidth number (in megabytes per second). To limit each
client to 4 streams, multiply the bitrate of your chosen video format by 4
and enter this number in the MB/s field.
Tip: Don't forget to convert from megabits per second to megabytes per
second.

Media to Air
Additional The following describes the additional Final Cut Pro Plug-ins:
NEXIO Sync NEXIO Sync notifies a Final Cut Pro user when the duration of a clip in
record has changed. If the editor is using media from the NEXIO Server
that is in record, NEXIO Sync will activate. The user can then update at
their discretion, and Final Cut Pro will be notified of the new clip duration,
and synchronize itself with the clip. The new duration of the clip is
immediately visible in the Final Cut Pro project bin.
Usage
NEXIO Sync is displayed as a menu item in the right hand side of the
Mac OS X menu bar. When Final Cut Pro is not running, it will be hidden.
When Final Cut Pro is opened, NEXIO Sync becomes visible in the menu.
The menu item has two display states. When there are no clips with
available updates, the word "NEXIO" is displayed in gray. When a clip
becomes available for update, the word "NEXIO" is displayed in red. If the
menu is red, the NEXIO Sync menu will display the list of the clips available
for updating. The user can select an individual clip to update in Final Cut
Pro, or select all clips at once. There is also a quit option in the menu.
If the user chooses the quit option, they will need to re-open NEXIO Sync
from the Applications folder to re-enable it, or log out and back into the
operating system. The quit option is displayed in both the gray and red
state.
Additional Notes
If material from a clip in record has been manually rendered by the
user, the rendered portions of the timeline will become unrendered
once the record is stopped.
If a clip in record is loaded in the Final Cut Pro viewer window, it will
become unloaded when an update to the clip is issued.
Viewing Stories The NEXIO NRCS Tool is used to view scripts and stories from a newsroom
and Scripts Via the computer system (iNEWS, ENPS, Octopus, etc).
NRCS Tool
Before accessing the NRCS Tool, make sure you have your Final Cut Pro
Workstation connected to a NEXIO MOS Gateway that is connected to the
Newsroom Computer System.
78 Chapter 2

Once the NRCS Tool has been launched, you will need to set the
preferences.
2 With the NRCS window active, select the NRCSTool menu and choose
Preferences or click Preferences.
The active rundowns are listed in the upper left hand pane of the NRCS
Tool.
Once the script reaches the end, it will automatically start over from the
beginning.
6 To stop the Tele-Prompt text or to restart the Tele-Prompt text from the
beginning, click Close or ESC to close the window. Then click
Tele-Prompt again to restart the prompter.
To record a voice-over
