Displacement during the 4 s

** the difference of problem b and c is that, in problem b we solved for the displacement after 4 seconds,
however in problem c, we are to solve for the displacement only during the 4 th seconds.
a = 3m/s2
What we know from the problem?
vi = 0 m/s
What is unknown? d4th (displacement during the 4th second)
For displacement:

FORMULA 2
For the displacement during the 4th seconds
d4th = d4 – d3
SOLUTION
d3 = 0 m/s (3s) + (3m/s2 )(3s)2
We need to solve for the displacement after 3s
d3 = 13.5 m
We already know the displacement after 4s d4 = 24 m

We know solved for the displacement during the 4
= 24 m- 13.5 m
second
d4th = 10.5 m

FREE FALL MOTION

The most familiar example of uniformly accelerated motion is that of a freely falling object. If air
resistance is ignored, a falling body picks up a speed at the rate of about 9.8 m/s 2 (980 cm/s2 or
32ft/s2). This is called the acceleration due to gravity (g). The v ertical movement of a body thrown into
the air or falling through the air is called free fall motion. To say something is freely falling is to say it is
falling free of opposing forces of any kind, usually air resistance. The only force that acts on an object
is the force of grav ity.

The equations applicable for free fall motion are V fy  Viy  gt

those under UAM with the following variable
2 gy  V fy  Viy
2 2
changes:
a --- g 1 2
y  Viy t  gt
d --- y 2
vf --- vfy Viy  V fy
vi --- viy y  ( )t
2

**Take note, in solving free fall, we will use the orientation that the acceleration due to gravity going downwards is
positive.

How long w ill it take for the body to reach its maximum height?

the velocity at that point will be zero.

Solving for the time

t = 3.125 s

MODULE 3B ASSESSMENT
PROBLEM SOLVING. Answer the following in a clean sheet of paper. Identify the given and show your
complete solution.
(50 points; 10 points each item)

1. City Mayor F. Zamora of Saint John City is travelling to Baguio. Along TPLEX, on a dry road, his
convoy travels with a velocity of 34 m/s. His driv er slams on the brakes and skids to a halt w ith
an acceleration of -8.0 m/s. However, if his car would have skidded to a halt on a wet road it
would have an acceleration of -4.0 m/s. How much farther would his car have skidded on the
w et road compared to the dry road?

2. Praybeyt Benjamin jogs and accelerates to a velocity of 4.36 m/s due west in 5 s in a shooting
oh his mov ie. His average acceleration is 0.840 m/s 2, also directed to the east. What w as his
v elocity when he began accelerating?

3. Dar Robinson, a stuntman set the world record for a free-fall from a helicopter, dropping 95 m
onto an airbag. I n this jump, he struck the airbag at a speed of 39 m/s. To assess the effects of
air resistance, determine how fast he would have been travelling on impact had air resistance
been absent.

4. Romina Mondragon dropped a stone from rest from a high cliff. After 5.0 s of free-fall, what is
the displacement of the stone? After 5.0 s of free-fall, what is the v elocity of the stone?

5. Bong and Rodrigo are playing their slingshot, both of them shot a pebble vertically upward.
Rodrigo shot after Bong, but while the Bong’s pebble is still on its way up. The initial speeds are
such that both pebbles reach their maximum height at the same instant, although these
heights are different. Suppose that the initial speed of the Bong’s pebble is 26.7 m/s and that
Rodrigo’s pebble is shot 1.25s after Bong’s, determine the initial velocity of the Rodrigos’s
pebble.
