INTRODUCTION
The first commercially produced enteral formulas were made available for use in the
1940s. The numbers of these products have expanded to include common
standardized and blenderized formulas, disease-specific products, modular
components, and powdered formulas.
Types of Enteral Formulae: There are many different types of enteral formulas that
can be used for tube feedings. The actual formula used depends on the individual
patient's needs. There are three basic types of enteral formulas:
1. Intact formulas, also called polymeric formulas, contain unaltered molecules of

proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. They are best for people who can digest and
absorb nutrients without difficulty.
Polymeric formulas are available as standard formulations containing protein

isolate with one or more sources of carbohydrate and fat.
2. Hydrolyzed formulas, also called semi elemental formulas, contain predigested

proteins and simple carbohydrates, plus a small amount of oil or a blend of
medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) and oil.
Monomeric formulas are "predigested" and are a good choice for patients who
lack the ability to digest or have a small absorptive area. Patients with feeding tubes
in the lower GI tract may also benefit from these formulas.
3. Disease specific formulae are designed for patients with specific disease states
such as : Glucose intolerance , Liver disease , Lung disease , GI dysfunction
Renal disease ,HIV/AIDS etc
Selection of formula: Selection of an enteral formula must be patient specific. The

suitability of a feeding formula should be evaluated based on
• Functional status of GI tract
• Physical characteristics of formula (osmolality, fiber content, caloric density,
viscosity)
• Macronutrient ratios
• Digestion and absorption capability of patient
• Specific metabolic needs
• Contribution of the feeding to fluid and electrolyte needs or restriction
• Cost effectiveness
