1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. General
This document is TECHNIP’s property. It may not be copied, disclosed and/or used wuthout TECHNIP’s specifical prior authorization.
These General Design Rules are standard documents to be used, as they are, always
in conjunction with the relevant Job Specification for Design XXXX JSD to be issued
for each particular project.
Particular project requirements (addenda), exceptions (amendments) as well as
alternative design requirements other than those included in these General Design
Rules and/or Client Specifications, shall be specified in the Job Specification for
Design.
1.2. Scope
These General Design Rules are standard specifications containing the general
design, installation and construction criteria as well as the technical requirements for
the heating and/or cooling of piping by means of external jacketing fed with fluids or
steam.
These General Design Rules are applicable to industrial chemical and petrochemical
plants.
2. DESIGN RULES
The needs and/or operating conditions to be observed for the design of a piping
jacketing system are:
In order to meet the above requirements, the system is to be sized taking into account
the following parameters:
The above studies shall determine that the following objectives are reached:
2. Drawing-up of a planimetric flow scheme for all lines relevant to all service fluids
included in the system.
- partial jacketing
- integral jacketing
The above typologies are shown in the TECHNIP Standard Design Drawing 0000 STD
1382.01.

3.1.1. The feeding and discharge lines for jacketing shall be provided with an interception
valve.
3.1.2. The jacket shall be provided with non-valved vents and drains for hydraulic testing and
operation purposes.
3.1.3. The jackets of line sections in discontinuous service or with remouvable components
for maintenance shall be fed to ensure that the service fluid circulated in the rest of line
in operation
3.1.4. 45° elbows shall not be employed due to a correct installation difficulties.
3.1.6. Dead legs and pockets shall be avoided as far as possible on process lines to be
jacketed.
3.1.7. The employment of eccentric reducers shall be avoided as far as possible due to
correct installation difficulties.
3.1.8. On horizontal sections with reducers, the jacketing fluid shall be fed into the smallest
diameter jacketed section.
3.1.9. In case of branches with a change of diameter, the feeding of service fluid shall be
foreseen on the jacketing run with the smallest diameter.
3.1.10. Process line fittings shall be exclusively B.W. type. (The only exception is the
execution of piping branches by means of S.W. half coupling, having verified that this
is allowed from a process point of view).
3.1.11. Dismantling joints located on feeding and recovery service fluid lines as well as on
jumpers shall be positioned outside the thermal insulation of the jacketed line.
3.1.12. Due consideration shall be given to thermal expansion in order to avoid interference
between process lines and jacketing.
3.1.13. In order to permit the welding of the inside process line as well as its inspection during
the test phase, the fittings and straight length of jacketed piping shall be provided in
two halves.

3.1.14. Internal pipe/jacket spacers shall preferably be placed at piping supports points and
should not interfere with feed discharges and jacket vents and drains.
3.1.15. Gate valves on feeding and discharge lines shall be positioned at a minimum distance

from manifolds, in an accessible position for all maintenance operations for instrument,
equipment or valves connected to other systems.
3.2.1. Steam shall be fed into the upper part of the line and, in horizontal sections, in the
upper part of the jacket. Jacket steam shall preferably run in counter-flow to the
process flow.
3.2.2. The discharge shall be provided in the lowest part of the line and, in horizontal
sections, at the lowest part of the jacket.
3.2.3. Jumpers on horizontal line sections shall be oriented downward and shall provide a
non-valved drain. When two jumpers are foreseen, their orientation shall be one
upward and one downward with one vent and one valveless drain respectively.
3.2.4. Jumpers on vertical line sections shall be alternately oriented one opposite the other in
order to avoid preferential circulation areas.
3.2.5. Jacketed carbon steel piping shall be protected with a reinforcing plate at steam inlets.
3.2.6. Each condensate discharge line shall have its own steam trap at the outlet from jacket.
3.2.7. Each steam trap shall be dismountable for maintenance or replacement purposes with
the steam feed recovery system (if any) in operation.
3.2.9. Steam traps with relative block valves and by-pass shall be preferably positioned as
close as possible to the recovery manifold. In any case, the recovery condensate line
upstream the steam trap cannot effect any remounts more than two meters.
3.2.10. On totally jacketed lines, a pad-type flange shall be provided on equipment to which
the jacket lines are connected.
3.3.1. Feeding shall be from the lower side of the line and, on horizontal spools, from the
bottom of the jacket. The service liquid in the jacket shall run preferably contrary to the
direction of the process fluid.

3.3.2. Discharge shall be from the upper side of the line and, on horizontal spools, from the
top of the jacket.
This document is TECHNIP’s property. It may not be copied, disclosed and/or used wuthout TECHNIP’s specifical prior authorization.
3.3.3. The loops on horizontal spools shall be oriented upwards and shall be provided with a
non-valved vent.
3.3.4. Service fluid routing shall have no branches, each feed having its own discharge.
3.3.5. Jumpers on vertical spools shall be placed opposite each other to prevent preferential
circulation routings.
3.3.6. Conveyor baffles shall be provided on the line to guarantee efficient circulation of the
heating liquid, better distribution of service fluid in the jackets and to remove dead
points.
3.3.7. Particular attention shall be paid to the positioning of vents and drains on the jacket
system. To eliminate the air from the system during the start-up phase, feeding
manifolds shall be placed at the lowest points of the system, and the recovery
manifolds at the highest, as compatible with space availability on structures and/or
ground.
Explicative examples for jacketing are shown in the TECHNIP Standard Design
Drawing 0000 STD 1382.02.
The standard dimensional table is shown in the TECHNIP Standard Design Drawing
0000 STD 1382.03.
3.7. Materials
Jacketed piping materials shall be in accordance with the project Piping Material
This document is TECHNIP’s property. It may not be copied, disclosed and/or used wuthout TECHNIP’s specifical prior authorization.
3.8. Documentation
On project documentation, jacketed lines are shown as per the following list.
1. The process line on piping layouts is shown with the same symbol for all plant
lines.
2. The jacket symbol is shown only at jacket feed and discharge points. Other
details are not shown (eg. jumpers, baffles etc.).
3. The feed and recovery lines for service fluid between distribution manifold and
jacket are not represented on the General Arrangement Drawings. Line routing
shall be defined in field by the mechanical contractor with the assistance of the
piping supervisor.
4. The feed and recovery manifolds for service fluid are represented on layouts
using the same symbol for all plant lines. All jacket line references are indicated
on each feed or recovery manifolds.
1. Process line and jacket sketch with all dimensions necessary for construction.
The jacket elements are shown using the symbols given in this spec., with
reference to typical construction details for jacketed lines. The jacket spools to
be installed in two halves for inspection of process line welding during the test
stage are not shown on the isometric sketch. These spools shall be defined by
the constructor with piping supervisors assistance.
2. Feed and recovery manifold sketches for service fluid, with all dimensions
necessary for construction.
