Abstract

The drilling riser system is simply defined as a pipe connecting the offshore wellhead which is located
at the surface of the sea where vessel is located to the Blow Out Preventer stack that is positioned at the
bottom of the sea. The riser sytem is connected to the well and it is tensioned at the top end while
drilling. Also fluid and mud can be circulated in this system. With the riser system mud can go back to
the surface. Also, drill strings are carried through the pipes in this system. The biggest difference
between land drilling and offshore drilling is the riser system and it makes riser system special for
offshore drilling. For instance; Buoyancy factor, pressure difference, BOP and rotary kelly bushing
placements differs for land drilling and offshore drilling. In this study, we will study and measure riser
length and weight, later we will solve our given problems on Matlab Software.

Statement Of The Problem

In this project, we were given some questions and we are expected to do some calculations for riser
system. However, before starting to do calculations first we need to have knowledge on offshore drilling.
Firstly; we will conduct some literature survey. We need to investigate offshore drilling mechanism and
equipments. But our main focus will be on drilling riser components. Secondly; we will investigate our
problem considering the given data. Length and weight of the components and the rig specifications are
given. Some assumptions are expected to be done here as step of the problems. Next, we will calculate
riser space out considering water depth, mud weight, properties of riser system and tension. Finally, we
will develop a computer program for the riser calculations.
