Long, long, long ago

far, far, far away

way, way, way up North

lived a little Inuk Hunter name Patunguyaq.

ᑕᐃᔅᓱᒪᓂᐊᓗᒃ

ᐅᖓᓯᒃᑐᐊᓗᒻᒥ

ᑕᑉᐹᓂᑐᖄᓗᒃ ᐅᑭᐅᖅᑕᖅᑐᒥ

ᐊᖑᓇᓱᒃᑎᖃᓚᐅᖅᐳᖅ ᐊᑎᖃᕐᖣᓂ ᐸᑐᖅᒍᔭᖅᒥ


He lived on the Tundra with his 3 sisters

Attanga, Sigluk, and Angnowya.

ᓄᓇᐃᓐᓇᕐᒥ ᓄᓇᖃᕐᑐᖅ ᐃᓚᒋᓪᓗᓂᒋᑦ ᐱᖅᒐᓱᑦ ᓇᔭᖏᑦ

ᐊᑦᑕᖓ, ᓯᒡᓗᒃ, ᐊᒻᒪᓗ ᐊᖕᓇᐅᔭ.


Patunguyaq had a dog name Kulu.

ᐸᑐᖑᔭᖅ ᕿᒻᒥᖃᓚᐅᕐᑐᖅ ᑯᓗᒥ ᐊᑎᖃᖢᓂ


For Patunguyaq to be able to provide for

his 3 sisters, he would go hunting every day.

ᐸᑐᖑᔭᖅ ᓂᕿᖃᕐᑎᑦᑎᔭᕆᐊᖃᓚᐅᕐᒪᑦ ᐱᖅᒐᓱᐃᑦ

ᓇᔭᖏᓐᓄᑦ. ᖃᐅᑕᒫᑦ ᐊᖑᓇᓱᒋᐊᖃᓚᐅᕐᐳᖅ.


One day, on one of his hunts on the frozen

ocean, he spotted a seal.

ᐅᓪᓘᑎᓪᓗᒍ, ᐊᖑᓇᓱᒋᐊᖅᓯᒪᓪᓗᓂ ᓯᑯᓯᒪᔪᖅ

ᑕᕆᐅᕐᒥ ᖃᖓᓂ, ᑕᑯᕗᖅ ᓇᑦᑎᕐᒥ


After preparing his talugusi and unaaq,

he slowly crept up to the seal.

ᐱᕙᒌᔭᓚᐅᕐᑎᓪᓗᓂᐅᒃ ᑕᓗᒍᓯᖓ ᐅᓈᖓᓗ,

ᓇᑦᑎᕐᒧᑦ ᑎᕐᓚᓕᖅᐳᖅ.
When he caught the seal, Patunguyaq dragged

the seal back to camp with Kulu by his side.

ᓇᑦᑎᕇᕋᒥ, ᐸᑐᖑᔭᖅ ᓇᑦᑎᕐᑕᓂ ᐅᓂᐊᕐᖢᓂᐅᒃ

ᓄᓇᒥᓄᐊᓕᕐᐳᖅ ᑯᓗ ᓴᓂᑦᑎᐊᖓᓃᓪᖢᓂ.
That night, his 3 sisters Attanga, Sigluk and

Angnowya prepared the seal for a feast.

ᐅᓐᓄᒃᑎᓪᓗᒍ, ᐱᖓᓱᑦ ᓇᔭᖏᑦ ᐊᑦᑕᖓ, ᓯᒡᓗᒃ ᐊᒻᒪᓗ

ᐊᖕᓇᐅᔭ ᓇᑦᑎᓕᐅᓕᕐᐳᑦ ᓂᕆᓂᐊᕋᒥᒃ.


After the feast, they all sang and drum danced

the night in celebration of Patunguyaq’s first seal.

ᓂᕆᔭᕇᒻᒪᑕ, ᐃᓐᖏᕐᖢᑎᒃ ᕿᓚᐅᔾᔭᕐᖢᑎᓪᓗ ᐅᓐᓄᖓᓂ

ᖁᕕᐊᓱᒍᑎᖃᕐᓗᑎᒃ ᐸᑐᖑᔭᖅ ᓇᑦᑎᕆᐅᓚᐅᕐᒪᑦ.


And that night, they all went to bed

very, very, very full

very, very, very happy

and

very, very, very proud of Patunguyaq’s first seal.

Sue Qitsualik ᓲᓵᓇ ᕿᑦᓱᐊᓕᒃ

Sue was born and raised in Gjoa ᓲ ᐃᓅᓯᒪᔪᖅ ᐱᕈᖅᓴᓯᒪᓪᓗᓂᓗ ᐅᖅᓱᖅᑑᖅ

Haven NWT up until she was 7. ᓄᓇᑦᓯᐊᕐᒥ ᑭᓯᐊᓂ ᐅᑭᐅᖃᓕᖅᑎᓪᓗᒍ 7-ᓂᒃ.

She had benefit of living in diverse ᐃᑲᔫᓯᐊᕈᓐᓇᕐᓯᒪᕗᖅ ᓄᓇᖃᖃᑦᑕᕐᓂᕐᒧᑦ

northern communities. Sue is a ᐊᔾᔨᒌᖏᑦᑐᑦ ᓄᓇᓕᐅᔪᓂ. ᓲ ᐊᐃᑉᐸᖃᕐᓇᓂ

single parent of 5 children. She ᐊᖓᔪᖅᑳᖑᕗᖅ 5 ᓱᕈᓯᓄᑦ.

moved to Ottawa in the summer ᐋᑐᕚᒧᐊᓚᐅᕐᓯᒪᔪᖅ 2009 ᐊᐅᔭᖓᓂᑦ. ᓲ

of 2009. Sue enjoys socializing, ᖁᕕᐊᒋᔭᖃᖃᑦᑕᕐᑐᖅ ᐃᓅᖃᑎᖃᕐᓂᕐᒥᒃ,

sharing, sustaining her Inuit heritage ᐊᒥᖅᑳᕐᓂᕐᒥᒃ, ᐊᓯᐅᑎᑦᑎᑕᐃᓕᒪᓂᕐᒥᓪᓗ ᐃᓄᐃᑦ

with other Inuit and spending time ᐱᖅᑯᓯᑐᖃᖓᓂᒃ ᐊᓯᖏᓐᓂᒃ ᐃᓅᖃᑎᒥᓄᑦ

and educating her children about ᐊᒻᒪᓗ ᐊᐃᑉᐸᕆᓗᓂᒋᑦ ᐃᓕᓐᓂᐊᕐᑎᓪᓗᓂᒋᓪᓗ

her/their Inuit heritage on her ᕿᑐᕐᖓᓂ ᐃᒻᒥᓄᑦ/ᐃᓄᐃᓪᓗ

spare time. ᐱᖅᑯᓯᑐᖃᖏᓐᓂᒃ ᐱᕕᖃᕈᓐᓇᓕᕌᖓᒥ.
