What is tire?
• Tire can be explained in many ways:
– Geometrically
– Mechanically
– Structurally
– Chemically
– Generally
Broadly tire is defined as: The pneumatic tire is a
toroidal, high performance polymeric composite,
which exhibits characteristics of a flexible-membrane
pressure container providing load carrying capability,
cushioning and road handling abilities, transmits
driving and braking torque, cornering forces and
performs all functions essential to locomotion.
FUNCTIONS OF TIRE
 Provide Load Carrying Capacity
 Provide Cushioning and Dampening
 Transmit Driving and Braking
 Provide Cornering Forces
 Provide Lateral and Dimensional Stability
 Resist Abrasion
 Generate Steering Response
 Have Low Rolling Resistance
 Provide Minimum Noise & Minimum Vibration
 Be Durable throughout the Expected Life Span
TIRE COMPONENTS & THEIR FUNCTION
TIRE COMPONENTS & THEIR FUNCTION
• Tread
• RIBS
• Grooves
• Side Walls
• Plies
• Liners
• Breakers
• Chafers

DIMESIONAL PARAMETERS
TYPES OF TIRES
1) Bias Tires 2) Bias-belted Tires 3)Radial Tires
• Reinforcing cords
extend diagonally from
head to head
• Angle of cord path to
centre-line is in range of
54-63o [high]
• They run in opposite
directions in each
successive layer
TYPES OF TIRES
1) Bias Tires 2) Bias-belted Tires 3)Radial Tires
• Consists of basic body
plies with two or more
belts between tread
rubber and carcass.
• Carcass angle : 58-61o
• Belt angle : 50-52o
• Belt reduces
circumferencial and
lateral deformation
during tire service
TYPES OF TIRES
1) Bias Tires 2) Bias-belted Tires 3)Radial Tires
• Consists of ply cords
running in radial
direction
• Inextensible belt of
several layers of cords
in the circumferential
direction
• Angle of belt-cords is
16-21o
• Radial orientation of
carcass cords results in
a flexible side-wall
which act independently
of belts
Differences

Ground pressure between Fairly constant ground Intermediate properties

the tyre contact area and pressure throughout the compared to bias and
road varies greatly from contact area radial
point to point

Unnecessary wear and the Wear and heat -do-

generation of heat circumvented due to design
Cost is cheap Cost is high than other two Intermediate [unpopular]
Advantages of radial tire over bias tires
• Longer tread life
• Lower rolling resistance
• Higher cornering power & smaller slip angle
• Better tractive and braking grip
• Better high speed performance
• Better riding comfort
• More resistant to impact
Disadvantages of Radial Tyre
• Harsh ride at speeds below 20 kmph
• Heavier steering at low speeds and when
parking
• Higher Cost
