Electrical Drive Systems

4.1 Introduction
In electric drive systems, in order to determine the
appropriate motor power, the mechanical power
requirements of the industrial machine (load) must be
4.1 Introduction determined.
The power requirement of an industrial system is generally
determined with respect to its continuous operating
condition at constant velocity (steady-state operation).

4.1 Introduction
In linear motion systems, the power is calculated as

Fv F  N  , v  m s  ,  
P
 P  W
4.2 Hoisting Machines
In rotational motion systems, the power is calculated as

T T  Nm ,   rad s ,  

Example: Consider a hoisting system with the following
parameters
m=1500kg, D=0.5m, u=25, =0.9, v=1.5m/s
Find the required motor torque and power for both lifting
and lowering conditions.

4.3 Elevators 4.3 Elevators
In order to reduce the power requirement of the electric
Elevators motor, the counterweight is used.
At steady-state, the torque due to the difference between
the weight of the cage and the counterweight is covered
by the electric motor.
The value of the counterweight is determined depending on
the condition that the electric motor must be loaded
equally when the full cage is lifted and empty cage is
lowered.

Example: Consider a elevator system with the following
parameters
m1=300kg, m=450kg, D=0.6m, u=30, =0.6, v=1.5m/s
a) Calculate the value of the counterweight
b) Calculate the motor torque
and power in case the full cage
is lifted and lowered.
c) …in case the empty cage is

4.4 Transportation Systems
For low-speed transportation systems, the air drag force is
small and can be neglected. In this case, the load torque
consists of the resisting forces depending on friction and
grading force.

where

FR  r mg cos  Fv

FG  mg sin  

For high-speed transportation systems, the resisting force Example: Consider an electric vehicle with the following
consists of the air drag force, rolling resistance force and parameters. Calculate the required motor torque and
grade resistance force as power for the vehicle traveling uphill at a grade of
tanα=0.06 and with constant velocity v=50km/h.
