T
he Classic Wooden Boat Association’s 25th annual boat parade
and fun weekend is scheduled for February 4, 2022, Waitangi
Weekend. The organisers would love to see as many classic or
wooden boats of any type join the parade to make this year’s
event the biggest ever.
The weekend kicks off on the Friday night with a Captain’s briefing
dinner at the VR Rotorua Lakeside Resort. The parade starts in the
Okere arm of Lake Rotoiti the next morning.
Organisers expect around 100 boats to parade past the reserve
in line, very many of them historical and well-decorated wooden
launches with costumed crews, as well as every other type and size of
small boat imaginable – sailed, rowed or powered –including some
strange ones like the vintage tiny Personal Water Craft.
A real cannon will start the parade, which will hopefully be led by
one or more Maori waka.
Following the parade around Okawa Bay, the bigger boats will park
up for inspection along the beach at Wairau Bay, where everyone can
enjoy a picnic and the fun and games on the beachside reserve.
T
he 42nd edition of 606-nautical mile Rolex Middle Sea Race
organized by the Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) started
from the Maltese capital Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage
Centre, on October 23, 2021.
Along with the 695nm Rolex Fastnet Race held biennially in
August, and the 628nm Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race each
December, this supreme test of seamanship is part of a triumvirate
of epic ocean contests integral to the Swiss watchmaker’s close
partnership with the sport dating back more than 60 years.
The racecourse is as challenging as it is scenic, taking in the
active volcanoes of Etna and Stromboli, as well as regular sightings
of marine life, remote islands and rock formations. Most editions
expose crews to a mix of big seas and fierce winds in the open
water segments, and more fickle breezes closer to land.
This year weather conditions played a bigger part than
usual, a storm resulting in the Race Committee controversially
shortening the course and stipulating an alternative finish line
mid-race, which upset many race entrants and significantly
affected the results. This year more than 100 yachts from 25
countries took part.
In the end, the 30.5m maxi yacht Commanche, skippered
by Mitch Booth and crewed by sailing superstars including Tom
Slingsby, was declared the race’s overall winner.
There will be bobbing for lollies, sack races, egg throwing, www.rolex.com
tug-o-war and the great Rotoiti Yellow Duck Hunt for the kids.
For the adults, the steamboats usually do a demonstration sail-
past, and the fast boats show us what they are capable of on
their special course a safe distance off the beach.
By mid-morning Sunday, the strangest possible collection
of floaty things will gather together on the nearby edge
of Lake Rotorua to wind their way for an hour or so down
the Ohau Channel to Lake Rotoiti, accompanied by the
occasional water-gun fight.
Entry is free to anything that mostly floats, so you will see
every type of inflatable toy and raft imaginable, including the
legendary floating settee. If nothing else, float the channel in
your lifejacket!

FORESTS
UNDER ATTACK
F
orest & Bird has created a series of maps from official data, showing
virtually all conservation land on mainland New Zealand, and massive areas
of privately owned land, is under attack from herds of wild deer, pigs and goats.
Forest & Bird is calling for the government’s climate plan to urgently fund
the largest deer, pig and goat control programme New Zealand has ever seen
to maintain important carbon sinks and the ecological health of native forests.
“The number and extent of wild deer, pigs, and goats on all land types
across New Zealand is at crisis levels,” says Forest & Bird Chief Executive Kevin Hague.
Regeneration of palatable tree species has almost entirely stopped in many
forests, as the increasing number of browsing animals destroy young trees and
undergrowth, eating young forests before they have a chance to grow.
The maps show how extensively deer, pigs and goats have spread, and that vast
tracts of conservation land are being hammered by multiple browsing species.
These pests are also spilling onto farm, forestry, and privately-owned
conservation reserves.
Native forests have been recognised by the Climate Change Commission as
nationally-significant carbon sinks that are vital to climate protection efforts. The
Commission has called for a massive forest restoration programme alongside a
ramped-up browsing pest control programme to protect all existing native forests.

There are rod holders across the back of the cabintop, and

A bait board can also be clipped into these, and a timber table,

“Because there’s so much storage space in the hulls, all this
stuff can be easily stowed away when it’s not in use – it doesn’t
all have to stay on deck.”
Basically, the catamaran hulls create a 6m by 2.6m platform,
and Kell says you could easily add a larger hard-top cabin, or
have a walk-around, depending on what you want to use the
boat for. It’s this flexibility of deck plan which saw Kell start
thinking beyond just creating a boat for his family and look at
commercialising the concept, as the Blue Diamond 680HT.
“We felt we’d come up with such a cool-looking boat, let’s
make this the demonstrator and see how it goes as a business,”
Kell says. With his connections in Australia, he has started a

oat launching ramps can be chaotic at times, especially during periods of
heavy use. Observing the comings and goings of trailer-boaters at any busy
boat ramp on a holiday weekend reveals a plethora of mistakes, unsafe
practices and poor ramp etiquette.
Most of them are the result of ignorance rather than bloody-
mindedness, but they can be potentially dangerous and/or seriously
inconvenience other boaties. By following a few simple steps we can avoid problems and
minimise unpleasant exchanges between boat ramp users.
Like so much else with boating, launching and retrieving a trailer boat quickly and
efficiently is about proper preparation. With that in mind, the good folk at Powerboat

hold up other users. safety equipment that should be carried onboard – that’s a subject for a future column.
PRE-LAUNCH
Don’t be one of those boaters who backs down the boat ramp and only
then prepares the boat for launching. Always prepare the boat away
from the launch site so that other boaties can use it while you work
through your checklist.
Upon arriving at the launch site, always:
• Remove stern strop
• Remove the prop flag
• INSERT THE BUNG(s)
• Remove the engine trailer lock
• Rig appropriate fenders and lines
• Raise antennas and/or navigation light poles
• Remove trailer light board if required
• Check hull for any road damage
• Allow 10 mins for wheel bearings to cool
• Only remove boat safety chain when the trailer is in the water
RECOVERY
Recovering a trailer boat and getting ready for the road essentially
reverses the procedure used to prepare it for launching. By following
this simple checklist you can avoid embarrassing, expensive and
potentially dangerous accidents when retrieving your trailer boat.
As was the case when preparing to launch the boat, most of the actions
on the checklist should be completed well clear of the boat ramp/launch
site. That way you don’t obstruct other boat ramp users.
On the ramp:
• Raise the engine before pulling the trailer out of the water
• Ensure boat is level on the trailer
• Ensure the safety chain between boat and trailer is attached
• Ensure vehicle windows are down and radio off so you can hear any shouts
or the dreaded engine scrape indicating you have forgotten point 1.

volunteers help anyone who is in trouble at sea.
“Helping someone is amazing. When you get home after
a rescue, cold, wet and exhausted, it helps to think: someone
survived today because of me.”
Jeff has two young grandchildren and wants to be sure that
Coastguard is there for them when they grow up. That’s why he
decided to become a ‘Coastguardian’ – a member of a special
group who have chosen to leave a gift to Coastguard in their Will.
“People think that Coastguard is centrally funded. They don’t
realise that Coastguard is a charity and that the volunteers do not
get paid. We are a volunteer service. The training, maintenance,
fuel and vessel replacement costs are very high”.
“I want my legacy to go towards maintaining and improving

THE SINKER
When snapper fishing we generally use the lightest sinker
necessary to get our baits down, but ledger rigs are an
exception. In this style of fishing some extra weight can be
beneficial, as it helps to set the hook – especially a circle hook

During the last 43 years Brabus has grown to

a special Brabus division building electric vehicles.
Brabus also constructs its own custom supercars.
So, like Ferrari, Lexus and other car specialists,
Brabus brought a marine division into their group in

to the early Australian Axopar 28 and 37 models in

So, it may be a surprise to most people that there is still
no simple solution to navigating once you drop beneath the
surface. Radio waves simply do not penetrate through water,
except for extremely low frequencies. Hence GPS signals cannot
be received, and two-way underwater radios are not possible.
navigation five metres away from your reference point (such as the boat’s

anyone old enough to remember dial-up modems
knows that sound signals are how we used to connect

still use this technology.
ONE
Of course, sound waves can also be used to locate
objects and measure distances. Sonar has been used
since the Second World War, bouncing a sound signal
off objects and measuring the echo. We have had
efficient, clear fish finders and sonar systems for many
years and with the latest fishtrack systems, we can even
get live tracking with 3D-type images.
So, we have the know-how to send high-frequency
sound signals underwater to identify a target together
with its distance and bearing from the boat. And those
higher frequency sound waves are suitable for also
sending encoded data signals between two devices.

publication Ocean Passages for the World. During the first part
of the voyage they were entitled to expect strong, favourable
westerlies but instead had very little wind at first and then
north-easterlies. But then a low-pressure system caught up
with them and, unusually, slowed down and stayed with
them for more than a week. “I called it our epic low because it
brought us 1,000 miles of fantastic sailing,” said Eric.
The south-east trade winds then gave them “uneventful
sailing” up to the equator, where they were lucky enough to
have no more than a couple of days in the doldrums. “It was
never completely calm,” said Eric, “but it was erratic. Every time
there is a windshift it takes about 40 minutes to readjust all the
sails and then the wind would change again. So, we were very
busy for not much gain.”
When Europa crossed the equator a “secret ceremony” was
held for the six crew members who had not previously done so.
“We kept it nice and easy,” said Eric. “No crew members were
damaged in the operation!”
Several times in the middle of the Atlantic, most of the crew
went swimming. This was usually when there was no wind at
all but, “we even had people swimming while we were sailing
slowly – they jumped off the jib boom and climbed on board
amidships as the ship passed them.”
After the equator there was “beautiful sailing” in the north-
east trades for a while but from then on progress was slow. “We
didn’t just have one Azores high,” said Eric, “we had three!”
Once they got into the North Atlantic “not far from Nova
Scotia”, they were disappointed, once again, not to find the

prevailing westerlies which should have brought them most of the way home. But
by now, having not used the engine at all since the Beagle Channel, they had less
reason to worry about running out of fuel, so they motored for nearly 24 hours.
This was followed by another short period of sailing, followed by five days of
motoring before a gale brought them into the Western Approaches.
The wind then dropped away again, and they started the engine for the last
time. For most of the voyage they had encountered very little shipping: a handful
of vessels had appeared on the AIS in the South Atlantic on passage from the
Cape of Good Hope to Brazil, and they had sighted just two vessels (and a few
others on AIS) in the North Atlantic. “But when we entered the English Channel
we were very disappointed to see the brown smears of exhaust gases on the
horizon – the smog of the shipping still going on.”
After three days of motoring up the English Channel and into the North
Sea, Europa eventually arrived at Scheveningen on June 16, 81 days and 10,160
miles after leaving Ushuaia. They found quite a welcoming committee: the Royal
Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution (the Dutch equivalent of the RNLI) met them
with a box of salted herring, and several vessels from the Scheveningen Yacht
Club also came out to greet them. “But it had to be toned down a bit when we got
to the dock,” said Eric. “There was controlled access to just allow family and ex-
crew to meet us. But it was a very nice calm welcome after a long trip.”
Europa has a total of 30 sails, including the six stuns’ls, but they didn’t quite
manage to use all of them. The unstayed spars for the skysails weren’t rigged for
the voyage; the flying jib wasn’t used; and although they had rigged the spars
and rigging for the stuns’ls after the last Antarctic voyage, they only had the
opportunity to use two of them, and then only for one day. The voyage’s most
severe weather brought 62-knot winds and seven-metre waves, but the boat and
the crew frequently encounter worse in Drake Passage. “It’s quite enjoyable once
you get used to it.” said Eric. “Europa is great, a very seaworthy boat.”
