P atan is home to some of the finest collection of arts and crafts in the whole
of Nepal. While its palaces and temples are recognized in many travel
guides and books, the traditional stone spouts have not received the
same acknowledgement. Known as dhunge dhara in Nepali or hiti
in Nepal Bhasha, some of these stone spouts still provide water to
the residents of Patan and are a respite to jaywalkers on hot summer
days, while others have dried up. Yet, they are each worth a visit for the
architectural marvel they are, and the intricate carvings they boast. Here are
six stone spouts in Patan that you need to visit and their stories you need to hear.
