5 CPU54-1 Card
The CPU54-1 card is the acquisition unit, process and command of all the functions of
AREA54-1. In fact, on this card you can find both the electronic interfaces towards the field, complete
with short-circuit isolators, and the entire electronic equipment, as well as the microprocessors for
elaborating the various signals and activating the commands such as relays and signaling outputs. In
addition to the connection to the viewing LED module with display, the card can be easily connected
to optional communication modules allowing to enlarge the control panel configuration.

this communication port only for the programming phase of the control panel, then remove the
connection. For continuous applications in combination with other software, use the appropriate
MCS54 optional module.

• Four open lines (class B) with an isolator each; configuration allows to connect up to 32
devices. Further isolator are non required (Fig. 7)
• One loop line (class A) having an isolator on each circuit termination. Up to three field
isolator must be used depend by number of the connected device (Fig. 8)
• Two loop lines (class A) having an isolator on each circuit termination. This configuration
allows to connect up to 64 devices on each line. One field isolator must be used (on each
loop), depending on the number of the connected devices (Fig. 9)
Regardless of the line configuration, the addresses of the devices are unique and should not be
repeated. There is no relationship or binding between the device address and the line where it is
installed.

The loop connection ensures the system integrity also against malfunctions due to the
opening or the short-circuit of the detection line.
In normal operation, the control panel dialogues with the detectors sending the code from
both sides of the loop; therefore, a line opening does not affect the communication: in such a case,
the control panel notifies the opening occurred, while the system continues functioning. In the event of
a line short-circuit, the intervention of the short-circuit isolators, systematically located on each
detector group, allows the isolation of the line section affected by the above short-circuit. In this case,
the control panel detects a fault condition due to the communication failure with the detectors
enclosed between the isolators isolating the short-circuit. As an example and with reference to Figure
9, should a short-circuit occur in the Section 2 Protected Area, the intervention of the external
isolators 1 and 2 allows the system to continue functioning; however, the control panel will notify the
communication failure with the devices in this area. Pursuant to the current regulations, the maximum
number of detectors allowed which can be connected between two short-circuit isolators is 32.
Branches and T-junctions are not allowed in the class A connection type.

The open line or class B connection ensures a superior installation versatility in comparison
with the loop line; however, the system is always able to signal any malfunctions due to the opening
or the short-circuit of the detection line. As for the loop line, the opening of a stub involves the failure
of communication with the device; the control panel will therefore notify such anomaly as a field fault.
In the event of a short-circuit, the isolator isolates the involved stub; the control panel will notify the
communication failure with the isolated devices. Please note that up to 32 devices must be installed
on each stub.
Note: the total maximum length of the open line is the sum of the lengths of all the branches.

Before connecting the conductors and the shield of the line cable to the line terminals of the
control panel, check the following list:
• Verify the electric resistance of the detection cable which should be less than 30 Ohm.
• Verify the electric isolation between the detection line conductors by checking using an ohm meter
that there is a resistance higher than 0,7M Ohm between the positive and the negative.
• Verify the electric isolation between the conductors and the line cable shield, by checking using an
ohm meter that there is a resistance higher than 15M Ohm between each single conductor and the
shield.
• Verify the electrical isolation between the line cable shield and the earth conductor by checking
that there is a resistance higher than 15M Ohm between these.
• Proceed to the connection of the conductors and the line cable shield to the terminals of the control
panel and to the earth connection.
If you want to determine the resistance of the line cable, short the two conductors at one end
and then measure using an ohm meter at the opposite end.
Note: you should remove any short-circuit isolators on the detection line, before measuring.
If you want to determine the resistance of the line cable, short the two conductors at the end
of every single branch, then measure using an ohm meter between the conductors to be connected to
the control panel terminals.
Note: you should remove any short-circuit isolators on the detection line, before measuring.
