NARROW SIDE DECKS OR NO SIDE DECKS
• To create more room on the inside, some space had to be
taken from the outside, leaving the side decks narrow to
non-existent. So, how do First Mates move safely from the
cockpit to the bow to tie the bow line when docking?
The answer is, they can’t. Even if they could, the foredeck
is often sloped, slippery when wet and the rails are too
low for safety.
• Also, the cockpit sole which is built up over the motor and
mid-cabin, elevates the crew above the typical low floating
dock. This configuration makes it difficult to attach a dock
line from the cockpit to the dock cleat.
• Complicating that, the often shallow cockpit gives crew

TIP
Don’t use the wheel when docking a twin inboard, use only the

Synchronize the two motors at say, 800 rpm. Then, forget the
throttles exist. These two distractions are out of your overloaded
mind all the way from the fairway until you are tied.
When handling or docking a twin inboard, one of the most
important lessons to master is turning/pivoting your boat on the
spot so that you can maneuver in the confines of the harbour

SOLUTION
• To dock a twin inboard, use only the two shifts—one in

your “body language” to control the boat.

PROPELLER OPTIONS

That brings us right back to where Part 1

ty. Once you eliminate the thrust of a pro-
peller, all you have left is drag. That leads
us to the three primary choices of propel-
lors for a sailboat – fixed, folding and
feathering (or variable pitch).
Fixed Propellers – For general purpose
sailboats, a fixed two-blade propeller is
the best trade off. It will move a boat
through the water at the rated rpms and
will produce the least drag of any fixed
blade prop. If one of the blades can be
positioned vertically while sailing, then
drag from the prop is minimized as the
top blade can ‘hide’ in the wake of the
keel and strut.
Three- and four-blade props add more
power when motoring and increased drag
when sailing. The resultant drag has been
described as equivilant to dragging a

For centuries, the nine islands of the Azores, strategically
placed in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, have been a way-

A large part of this unique construction method of the MJM

the production of America’s Cup and development class sail-

speed is determined by weight; the lighter the better. With
motor yachts, on the other hand, weight comes at a very slight

Style, beauty and grace; these are all traits that both pageant

the feel of the main deck area, enabling varying degrees of
privacy, wind, sun exposure and climate control.
The helm station, directly underneath the sunroof, has a
matte black finish, tilting steering wheel and adjustable seat-

verts into an aft-facing sunbed with the addition of a cushion
stowed under the seat. A tinted curved partition beside the
helm, slides across and latches to seal off the companionway
from the lower deck area.
Teak decking extends right from the companionway back
to the expansive swim platform that hydraulically lifts and
lowers and has a pocket ladder hidden beneath a hatch cover.
This allows for ease of access when launching the tender
from the wide and deep tender garage in the transom.
One of the great features aboard the Leader 46 is the tran-
som-mounted electric grill and sink located just above the
tender locker hatch. This layout is very versatile and multi-
functional, where guests can relax on the lounger bed/bench,
make lunch, have drinks and go for a swim all in the same
space. Dual stairs lead to the main deck, into the salon and
up to the side decking.
