Section A is compulsory. Attempt any four questions from Section B.

Question 1
a. Name the unit used to measure the energy of atoms. Express this unit in terms of the
S.I unit of energy.
b. A ray of light suffers refraction through a glass slab as shown in the figure. Find the
angle of incidence and the refractive index of the glass.

c. Find the number of electrons flowing through a wire if 2 coulomb charge passes
through it.
d. Mention the two factors affecting resistivity.
e. Name the prisms used to obtain the infrared spectrum. Why are they used?

Question 4
a. State the factors affecting e.m.f of a cell.
b. The kinetic energies of two bodies are equal. Find the ratio of their momenta in
terms of their masses.
c. Calculate the frequency of violet light whose wavelength is 450nm. The speed of
light is 3x108 m/s.
d. Mention any two disadvantages of solar panels.
e. Name the chief energy transformations that occur in the following:
(i) thermocouple (ii)microphone [2+2+2+2+2=10]

a. When is a body said to be in equilibrium? State the laws of equilibrium.
b. Find ‘d’ from the information provided in the diagram.

a. Distinguish between a single fixed pulley and a single movable pulley. (3 points)
b. A crowbar of 2m long, is pivoted about a point 20 cm from its tip. Calculate:
i. the mechanical advantage of the crowbar.

ii. the least force which must be applied at the other end to displace a load of 180
kgf.
iii. Name the class of lever.
c. Draw a pulley system of velocity ratio 4 and mark all the tensions, the direction of
load and the direction of effort. [3+3+4=10]
Question 7
a. A boy standing between two buildings fires a gun hears two successive echoes after
0.8 s and 1.5s. The speed of sound in air is 320m/s; calculate the distance between
the buildings.
b. Distinguish between free and forced vibration.
c. In the given figure, four pendulums are suspended from the same elastic string and
pendulum C is set into vibrations.
i. Which of the other three vibrate with maximum amplitude and why?
ii. Which two pendulums will be in phase?
iii. Name the phenomenon taking place. [3+3+4=10]

a. In the following diagram O is the object and I is the image formed by a lens.
Complete the ray diagram. Locate the lens and mark the focus of the lens by the
letter F. Draw the lens in the diagram.

b. The diagram shows a 45°, 90°, 45° prism where angle A is 90°. Draw the ray
diagram to show the image of the arrow. What is the angle of deviation?

a. Write any three properties of electromagnetic waves. Name the electromagnetic
wave which has the highest penetrating power.

b. Derive the relation K.E= mv2, where symbols have their usual meanings.

c. A machine lifts a load of 250kg in a vertically upward direction. A machine is
driven by a freely falling mass of 50 kg through a distance of 10m in 5s. Calculate:
i. work done by the falling mass.
ii. power input of machine
iii. power output of machine, if it is 80% efficient. [g=10m/s2] [4+3+3=10]
Question 10
a. A 230V battery is connected into four resistances as shown in the diagram.
Calculate the
i. equivalent resistance between A and B
ii. equivalent resistance between C and D
iii. total resistance in the circuit
iv. current in the circuit
