Preface

This report has been prepared as part of Internship Program of “University of Petroleum and

Energy Studies” at the Royal Enfield. The objective of the internship program was to familiarize
the student with industry work culture and relate the knowledge earned in the campus.

The initial portion of the report describes the company details, vision and product and services
provided by the firm. Later portion is regarding the complete details of my project “Functioning
of a Dealership”.

The major problem I faced during my internship that there were not sufficient documents
available on Royal Enfield. from where I could get more information about the firm. Due to
COVID-19 crisis couldn’t able to get the exposure to industry but overall gained an immense
knowledge how industry works. It was a great experience to do an internship in virtual mode.

The entire internship experience helped me to become better than before. I learned both technical
and administrative skills and was able to be a bit familiar with working at the industry level.

The present is not free of limitation and there might be some minor mistakes such as typing
mistakes. Though I have tried my best to keep the report free from errors, I apologize if any any
error found which was not deliberately made.

Thank You

1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

 History of Royal Enfield

Royal Enfield is an Indian multinational motorcycle manufacturing company headquartered in

Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The company is the oldest global motorcycle brand in continuous
production,[3] and operates manufacturing plants in Chennai in India. Licensed from Royal
Enfield by the indigenous Indian Madras Motors, it is now a subsidiary of Eicher Motors
Limited, an Indian automaker. The company makes classic-looking motorcycles including
the Royal Enfield Bullet, Classic 350, Meteor 350, Classic 500, Interceptor 650, Continental and
many more. Royal Enfield also make adventurous and off-roading motorcycles like Royal
Enfield Himalayan. Their motorcycles are equipped with single-cylinder and twin-
cylinder engines. Independence Act 1947 the new government looked for a suitable motorcycle
for its army to patrol the country's border. In 1952 the Royal Enfield Bullet was chosen as the
most suitable bike for the job.

 Royal Enfield Dealership

Out of many showrooms and workshops present all around the world, one showroom is situated
in Baraut (UP). The showroom and workshop are under the name of MR. Manish Gupta. The
showroom handles all the sales of motorcycle and accessories and also provides with financial
assistance. The workshop handles all the maintenance and repair of the motorcycle, whereas the
store in the workshop handles all the parts. The workshop and the showroom work separately.
Being and intern from automotive background, the most suitable place for me was at the
workshop. My main job was to lay my hand on the live engine and learn but apart from that I
also got to know how the floor works and also learned the functionality of the showroom. The
dealership is mainly divided into two parts i.e. the showroom and the service center. The
showroom is responsible for the sales and assistance. Once the bike is sold, the service center has
the main job. Given the that there aren’t many dealerships near that are, that turned out to be an
advantage for the dealership. They were able to cover so many rural areas from which they got a
huge number of buyers. People in the rural areas had to go to cities in order to buy or get their
bike serviced but now they had it in their own area. Roya Enfield really looked forward to get

1
their service to the small towns as well. With this I learned how the dealership manages to solve
the problems of the people by providing assistance to the owners

2 INTRODUCTION

The whole dealership is divided into four parts i.e., showroom, store, workshop and finance.

I was assigned to work and learn the maintenance and the functionality of the motorcycle in the
workshop. The workshop comprised of 4 platform and 6 technicians. On an average the
workshop handles from 20-25 motorcycles on a daily basis but on peak days, the number goes up
to 40. The workshop would handle all the motorcycle coming from a simple oil change to a full-
on engine overhauling. Sometimes there would be some accidental cases as well which would
require replacement and repair at the same time. At first I was taught how to do a basic servicing
of a single cylinder engine along with basic troubleshooting of the motorcycle. After laying some
hand on the servicing, the head technician taught me how to tune a single cylinder royal Enfield
engine both constricting FI and carburetor. We also fully overhauled both UCE and Cast-Iron
engine and there I learned what is the difference between them and also the functionality of both
the engines. In 2019 Royal Enfield has introduced their totally new engine. A twin cylinder
650cc liquid cooled engine. This was a totally new engine built by the company. Everything is
new in this engine and therefore was the mechanics. Unlike the older push-rod mechanism, this
engine had dual overhead cams which resulted in refined power delivery. This engine was a bit
complicated to learn as there were so many parts controlled electronically. The bikes on which
these engines were placed are also different as they were totally new motorcycles. Technicians
has to go under special training to work upon these engines.

The store section comes under the workshop section and a store manager id responsible for the
keeping the checklist of parts which are being used in the motorcycle. Every time when there is
any need of any part, the store manager is informed and he supplies the adequate part to the
mechanic. The store manager is also responsible for keeping a checklist about the parts which are
already present and has to calculate in what amount and in how many time he next order is going
to be placed. I’ve learned that there is a fixed amount of part one should keep with them in order
to be in the profit.

2
The showroom works independently from the workshop as they are responsible for selling the
product and has nothing to do with the maintenance. There is a grading given to every showroom
on the basis of feedback and the number of vehicles they have sold. The company has made a
pattern according to which the owner of the showroom would get a particular discount on the
number of vehicles they have sold. The discount would keep on increasing with increase in sales.
The owner of the showroom is responsible for the sales in hos area. The company does random
audits on the dealership on order to see if the dealership is working properly or not.

Another part of the dealership is the finance department which is responsible for provide
financial assistance to the people who are willing to buy the vehicle or to the people who wants
to claim the insurance under the name of the company. This department plays a very vital role in
the sales of the vehicle as not many people are able to buy or willing to pay the amount of the
vehicle in cash or in direct form. So in that case the finance department comes into play which
helps the buyer to fulfil their needs. The department also keeps a check on the transactions
happing in the dealership. They collect data from the sales team and store and depicts if the
company is in loss or in profit.

3 OBJECTIVES

As it wasn’t a project internship therefore we did not have any particular objectives throughout
the internship but there were few objectives which would be common on daily basis.

1) Complete the motorcycle on time:

As soon as the motorcycle enters into the workshop, a job card is opened and is updated
on the main site of the company. The company emphasizes on giving the bike as soon as
possible. If a motorcycle remains in the workshop for any reason, the dealership has to
update on the site why the motorcycle is still there and estimate time to dispatch the
motorcycle.

2) Keeping the stock ready:

There are so many parts which are being used on daily basis such as brake pads, cables
etc. Apart from that, there are also some parts which company has to keep on store which

3
are not being used that frequently but in order to dispatch bike as soon as possible. While
maintaining the stock, there are so many factors a dealership has to keep in mind before
placing the order. Such as, in how much time the stock is going to expire in order to place
the next order, how much demand does a particular part has. There are only few common
parts otherwise every motorcycle uses a different part.

3) Keeping sales as high as possible:

Dealership really emphasize on keeping the sales as high as possible. This comes into
play with the help of finance department and sales department. The company has a limit
on the number of motorcycles to be provided to a particular dealership as the production
rate of the company is very low therefor the dealership also has to make a balance
between the waiting list of the customers and the number of motorcycles arrived.

4 DESIGN/ EXPERIMENTS/

There wasn’t anything newly built but I learned the difference between the things that can be
repaired and things that has to be replaced. There were different methods used while installing
new parts and while repairing existing one. For instance, if a new valve had to be installed into
the engine, it cannot be a direct fit. There is a paste of very fine metal particles which is applied
on the valve and on the head. The valve is the rotated and is rubbed against the head in order to
make it air tight. In the process, the back of the valve is sanded in order to make it work
properly. Whereas in the case of repairing the existing part of the motorcycle different methods
are being used. For instance, if there is any bend in the frame of the bike, a rod is put into the
neck of the motorcycle and with the help of leveler, wooden blocks and hydraulic jack the frame
is then given proper shape. Like that different techniques were used to solve the problems of
different vehicle.

5 CONCLUSIONS

Throughout this internship, I learned how a dealership works. There are many parts of a
dealership and every part has its own job and all the functions are interlinked somewhere.
Although I was working and more inclined towards the workshop or the technical part of the
motorcycle but the fact I had everything around gave me a chance to know what are other parts
of the dealership that comes into play. With this experience I am not only gained experience in
the technical field but also in the field of administrations as well.
