SEPTIC TANK: In order to do this, pipes should be laid in DELHI
straight lines in both vertical and horizontal planes;
however, if bends are unavoidable, they should be bent
in a relatively uniform manner. The pipe should be
positioned in straight lines in both vertical and horizontal
planes; large radius bends should be avoided where
possible. It is recommended that anything that may
connect the pipes should not create an angle greater
than 45 degrees from the main flow direction.

ROOFING: The 1,110 sf green roof was the first in the Inland Empire area of Southern
California. It utilizes two different systems – 4-in shallow trays and 9-in deep soil – to test the
viability of green roofs in the area. Observational analysis indicates that plantings in the
deep soilsystemare viable,with irrigation.
STORMWATER MANAGEMENT. Stormwater runoff from the rooftop and grounds is
directed into a 2,000 gallon rainwater cistern buried beneath the site’s water-less
demonstration garden. When full, the cistern can theoretically supply all of the site’s
irrigation needs for 2-4weeks (depending on the season), thereby reducing the amount of
potable water needed forirrigation.

ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN –

• Four concentric layers of building shells each have a different purpose: the outer
shell, constructed of insulated concrete forms, acts as thermal mass protecting
the building from the solar heat;

• The second shell is a cast in place concrete wall that provides lateral integrity to
the building structure; the third shell, a mostly north facing glazed curtain-wall,
maximizes diffused daylight and visual connection into the building;

• The inner shell, made of salvaged red wood from the local winery, shades the
south facing wall of office/conference wing.

• These four shells define the interior spaces. Such spaces are ”open and fluid to
maximize spatial flexibility and interconnectivity for ventilation and daylight.”

• The exterior and interior spaces were both designed with the intent to
constantly push the visitor onward in his journey of experiencing the building.
