VII - TECHNOLOGIES WHICH ARE CHARACTERISTIC OF KWI

WASTE WATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY OF KWI – MINICELL ®

Dissolved air flotation (DAF) clarifier for small flow applications

TheMinicell is the simplest and the

smallest DAF clarifier in the KWI
product line. It is designed for small
flows.

Main advantages:
- Very competitive price.
- Simple operation.
- Excellent performance with “difficult” and “ fragile” sludge quality - the sludge blanket does
not move and the risk of having “sinking flocs” is negligi le (the sludge is not pushed to the
sludge extraction device as the spiral scoop is travelling around the sludge blanket) .
- 3 different tank heights available (choice according to the application).
Main applications:
- Excess biological sludge clarification and thickening before further de-watering (for
small installations) (e xcellent application in case of biological phosphorous removal. This
reduce also the polymer consumption in the sludge de-watering system).
- Industrial effluents from the food industry in combination with chemical treatment.
- Industrial low flow effluents.
The tank and the construction of the MINICELL can be adapted to the application and to the
effluent.
The depth of the tank varies according to the type of the effluent, the inlet solid
concentration and the requirements of the application (clarification with or without
chemicals, sludge thickening,...)
MINICELL is available in 10 sizes from 16 to 450 m3/h.

WASTE WATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY OF KWI – SEDICELL ®

Dissolved air flotation (DAF) clarifier for sludge thickening

Mechanically simple and robust

construction combined with sophisticated
hydraulic design allows constant and
reliable performance in any conditions.

Main advantages:

- High floated sludge consistency is easy to achieve and maintain even without polymer.

- Low sensitivity to variations in flow and quality of the influent.

- Excellent performance with “difficult” and “ fragile” sludge quality. The sludge blanket does
not move and the risk of having “sinking flocs” is negligi le (the sludge is not pushed to the
sludge extraction device as the spiral scoop is travelling around the sludge blanket).

Main applications:

- Excess biological sludge thickening before further de-watering (excellent application in case
of biological phosphorous removal or for large amounts of excess sludge. This also reduces
the polymer consumption in the sludge de-watering system).

- Biological sludge clarification after aeration tanks gives the possibility to raise the
concentration in the aeration tanks up to 8-10 g/l.

The construction of the SEDICELL allows fabrication of the tank in stainless steel or in
concrete.

The sludge extraction can be controlled automatically with a sludge blanket controller. This
allows fully automatic operation of the entire installation while maintaining optimal operating
conditions.

SEDICELL is available in 18 sizes from 2,4 to 20 m diameter.

POTABLE WATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY OF KWI – FLOTOFILTER ®

Dissolved air flotation clarifier and filtration for ground water

Flotofilter was developed based on the
KWI experiences collected with the
Sandfloat BP and the Klaricell
installations.
The new flotofilter implements the
same combined clarification filtration
technology as the previous circular
units, but the design is adapted to
rectangular concrete tanks and large
flow rates.

Thanks to an innovative concept, flotofilter performs a two-stage clarification process in one

single tank: DAF clarification (ideal to remove SS) + Single or double granular media filtration
(achieves excellent filtered water quality) = A combination of 2 complementary water
purification technologies!

Main advantages:

- Economical and compact solution.

 Integrating 5 processes in one machine: coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, flotation
and filtration.
 Small footprint: compared to gravity settling tank plants (old technology widely used in
Asia), KWI systems can be 10 times smaller. Optimizing building space, quantities of
pipes, electrical lines makes flotofilter suitable for plants with limited space.
 Saving up to 40% of chemicals use, compared to the traditional technology.
 Saving up to 50% of cost for storaging sludge compared to the traditional technology.
Flotofiletr ensures, in fact, higher solids sludge production. Flotofilter, providing
clarification in an activated sludge process, will produce a sludge with a solids content in
the 2-5% TS range. Compared to the sludge from a gravity clarifier (0.5-1.5% TS), the
sludge volume generated by flotofilter will typically be 1/4th to 1/10th of the volume
generated by a gravity clarifier.
 Rate of recovery water up to 100%
- Reliability
 Treating water with high suspended solids, turbidity and fluctuation of the input water
 A great solution to remove algae and organic, heavy metals as As, Fe, P , Cr…which is
not treated by traditional technology.
- Flexibility
 With a smart sensor system, each unit can operate particularly each process as
coagulation, floccutation, flotation and filtration or connect them together depending on
the composition of input water. This solution can retrench operating costs for investors

VIII - TECHNOLOGIES WHICH ARE CHARACTERISTIC OF GREE

WATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY OF GREE –MBBR TECHNOLOGY

About technologies MBBR (Moving Bed Bioreactor)

MBBR is one of the most advanced technology in the world today, combining the advantages
of the process of activated sludge process and biological attached growth. Based on the
activity of the microbial decomposition of organic matter to the growth and development.
On the surface of the biofilm in one fluid separation membrane and suspension disturbance in
the reactor. Nutrients, organic matter and oxygen from diffusing through suspension fluid into
the biofilm, whereas biodegradable products diffuse back from the biofilm on the suspension.
The diffusion process "up and down" is ongoing.
When the microbial growth and development, biomass prices microbial become thicker.
Thickness of biomass affects the ability to reach of oxygen and substrate in the reactor with
biofilm.
The microorganisms in the outer layers of the biofilm is first-step approach of dissolved
oxygen and substrate for biological membranes. When dissolved oxygen and substrate
diffusion through biological membranes inside, they are microorganisms used to produce the
biofilm. The decrease in the concentration of dissolved oxygen through the biofilm formation
of biofilm aerobic, anoxic and anaerobic.
The different environments create different microorganisms and thus, the occurrence of the
biological differences between the biofilm.

In the deeper layer of the biofilm, where oxygen levels and lower substrates, arbitrary groups
of microorganisms dominate. This is also the place of nitrification by nitrate becomes electron
acceptor of bacteria arbitrary. Thus, MBBR technology Nitrogen and Phosphorus handled
quite effective .In oxidation aerobic biochemical and organic compounds containing nitrogen,
sulfur, phosphorus is converted into nitrate (NO3), sulphate (SO42-), phosphate (PO43-), CO2
and H2O.

When environmental terrestrial organic carbon, Nitritation bacteria (Nitrosomonas) and

Nitrification (Nitrobacter) perform nitrification under 2 phases:

400NO2- + 195O2 + NH3 + 2H2O + 5CO2 

 C5H7NO2 + 400NO3-

Nitrification can occur if the outset, nitrogen exists in the form of ammonia nitrogen. Speed
change from ammonia into nitrate for activated sludge as follows: N-NH4 + 3mg every time 1
hour, then Nitrification is 1g organic matter.

WATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY OF GREE –AFBR TECHNOLOGY

1. INTRODUCTION

FBR (Fixed Bed Reactor) technology is used by GREE. It is used to handle dissolved organic
substances in wastewater as well as a number of inorganic substances such as H 2S, sulfide,
ammonia, nitrogen,…

Based on the activity of microorganisms which decompose organic pollutants to food for
growth and development, the FBR system (Fixed Bed Reactor) is integrated in this process. It
combined the three biological activated sludge processes. The process of denitrification,
phosphorus and the growth of microorganisms which stick on the exposed materials located
in the system. Condition for the application of the FBR (Fixed Bed Reactor) is the isolated and
efficient symbiotic of the three microorganisms:

 Heterotrophic microorganism: alcaligenes, arthrobacter, citromonas, flavobacterium,

pseudomonas, zoogloea…

 Autotrophic microorganism: nitrosomonas, nitrobacter, nitrospira, thiobacillus,

thiothrix, siderocapsa…

 Bonded microorganism: arcanobacterium pyogenes, staphylococcus aureus,

staphylococcus hyicus, streptococcus agalactiae, corynebacterium renale…

Strain of Pseudomonas Strain of Nitrobacter

AFBR (Advance Fixed Bed Reactor) is an advancement of the FBR technology developed by
GREE. To the system sensor was added a system DO and an automatic control system. The
automatic control system provides oxygen to help regulate the amount of oxygen in the
water. It ensures an optimal concentration of oxygen, superior processing efficiency and save
power consumption.

In the course of operating a wastewater treatment system, the most significant costs are
energy costs and consumption of chemicals. The fine bubble air distribution system in the
AFBR which was designed by GREE can increase the amount of dissolved oxygen in water up
to 28 %. The implementation of a high-performance process can save the power
consumption and can level about 40 % of oxygen. Moreover, the AFBR can minimize the use
of chemicals by increasing the MLSS concentration of the microorganisms.

3. SCIENTIFIC BASIS OF AFBR TECHNOLOGY

The process of decomposition organic substances by microorganisms is called biochemical

oxidation. To implement this process, dissolved organic substances, both the adhesive and
the small dispersion in the waste water, need to move into the cells of microorganisms in the
following form:

Transfer of pollutants from the liquid phase to the surface of the microbial cell
Diffuse from the cell surface through a semi-permeable membrane due to the
difference in concentration inside and outside the cell;
Metabolism of microbial cells, energy production and synthesis of new cells.

The biochemical oxidation rate depends on the concentration of organic substances, the
amount of impurities and the stability of the flow of waste water into the treatment system.
The speed of biochemical reactions is affected by the hydrodynamic regime, the amount of
oxygen in the water, temperature, pH, nutrients and trace elements.

Biological treatment process in AFBR systems consists of three stages:

- Oxidation of organic substances:

CxHyOz + O2 Enzyme
CO2 + H2O + H

- Synthesis of new cells:

Enzyme
CxHyOz + NH3 + O2 CO2 + H2O + H

- Intracellular decomposition:
Enzyme
C5H7NO2 + 5O2 5CO2 + 5 H2O + NH3  H

The microorganisms break down the organic substances in wastewater and collect energy to
transform into new cells. Only one fraction of organic substance is oxidized completely to
CO2, H2O, NO3-, SO42-,… In general, micro es in activated sludge systems exist of many
different coexisting bacteria.

Process of suspending activated sludge

Process of suspending activated sludge in the AFBR system leads the organic substances to
grow as floating material. Decomposition occurs when the organic substances is in contact
with wastewater sludge in continuous aeration conditions. The aeration is to ensure the

79
Profile and experiences of GREE (Ref: 0420)
GREE
required supply of oxygen in activated sludge and maintained in a suspended state. The rate
of leading dissolved oxygen in the activated sludge tank depends on:

The ratio of the amount of food (CHC in wastewater) and microorganisms: the
ratio F/M;
Temperature;
Growth and physiological activity of microorganisms;
Concentration of toxic products accumulated in the metabolic process;
Cellular quality
Dissolved oxygen.

Biological growth processes

Organic substances are decomposed by microbial populations bond on the layer of filter
material. The organic substances in waste water will be absorbed in the microbial membrane
0.1-0.2 mm thick and will be decomposed by aerobic microorganisms. When microorganisms
grow and develop, the film thickness increases, so the oxygen will be consumed before it
spread in all biological membrane thickness. Thus, discretionary environment is formed close
to the surface of the filter material.

When the film thickness increases, the process of assimilation of organic substances occurred
before they come into contact with microorganisms near the surface of the filter material. As
a result the microorganisms in this intracellular decomposition are not longer able to stick on
the surface filtration and drift.

Microbial populations stick in the FBR system

Denitrification (N)

The compound of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) causes eutrophication in wastewater. The
most popular method to remove P from wastewater is still physical and chemical combined
with high treatment costs.

Nitrification takes place in two steps, starting with ammonia is converted into nitrite by
Nitrosomonas, then nitrite oxidized to nitrate by Nitrobacter. Two types of bacteria in AFBR
system are autotrophic. As a carbon source they use carbon dioxide in their cells according to
the reaction equation:

2H+ + NH3 + 2e- + O2 → NH2OH + H2O (1)

NH2OH + H2O → HNO2 + 4H+ + 4e- (2)

Nitrification and denitrification

Under the effect of two microorganisms NH3 will be oxidized and becomes NO2 and NH2OH,
the final product is NO2.

2H+ + 0.5O2 + 2e- → H2O (3)

In terms of molecular dynamics, the two electrons generated from reaction (2) will be used
for reaction (1). Two left electrons from energy transport will play a role for the final stage of
the oxidation process by creating a proton dynamics.

2NH3 + 3O2 → 2HNO2 + 2H2O (4)

Oxidation of nitrite:

NO2- + 0.5O2 → NO3- (5)

81
Profile and experiences of GREE (Ref: 0420)
GREE
During the process of denitrification bacteria like denitrobacillus, moraxella, thiobacillus,
pseudomonas,… remove nitrate. Nitrate and nitrite will e converted into N2O and nitrogen-
free according to the following reaction equation:

6NO3- + 2CH3OH → 6NO2- + CO2 + 4H2O (6)

6NO2- + 3CH3OH → 3N2 + 3CO2 + 6OH- (7)

Reduction of phosphorus (P)

Phosphorus is a very important element in the life of every cell. The total dry weight of each
microbial cell consists of 1-3 % Phosphorus. For humans, phosphorus is an indispensable
component in genetic structure of DNA, RNA.

In terms of protecting the environment, phosphorus is a major causer of eutrophication. By

uncontrolled increase it caused water pollution, death of algaes and death of aquatic plants.

Phosphorus is also an important source of nutrients. It plays a role in the process of growth,
development and reproduction of microorganisms in the AFBR symbiotic microflora.

H2PO4- → HPO42- + H+ (8)

H2P2O7 + H2O → 2H3PO4 (9)

H3PO4 → H2PO4− + H+ (10)

H2PO4− → HPO42- + H+ (11)

HPO42- → PO43- + H+ (12)

To remove Nitrogen & Phosphorus by biological methods with AFBR technology will bring high
processing efficiency and low operating costs. The AFBR technology is compact and easy to
block. In near future it has the prospect of wide application, especially for the treatment of
civil and industrial projects in Vietnam.

WATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY OF GREE – AOP TECHNOLOGY

1. ABOUT AOP

AOP (Advanced Oxidation Processes) technology is used by GREE. It is used to thoroughly

treat persistent organic pollutants in wastewater.

Advanced oxidation processes are defined as oxidation decomposition processes based on the
free activity of the hydroxyl (OH), which was created in this processes. Hydroxyl radicals are
one of the most powerful oxidizing agents. Original they are not biodegradable. Hydroxyl
radicals choose all organic compounds, even the most persistent compounds and turn them
into inorganic, non-toxic compounds (also known as mineralization) such as CO2, H2O,
inorganic acid…

Principles of AOP process

Common oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide, ozon,… can improve their oxidation y
different reactions to produce hydroxyl radicals, if they perform indirect oxidation via
hydroxyl. So the process is called advanced oxidation process AOP (Advanced Oxidation
Process).

Advanced oxidation technologies have an important role in promoting the oxidation process
and helping decompose a variety of organic pollutants in wastewater. Advanced oxidation
processes are suitable and efficient to decompose persistent organic pollutants (POPs),
halogenated hydrocarbons (trihalomehtane, trichlorethane, trichloroethylene, etc.), aromatic
hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, etc.), PCBs, nitrophenol, plant
protection chemicals, dioxine and furans, dyes, surface-active su stances,…

Process of creating hydroxyl OH

Due to hydroxyl radicals (OH) with strong oxidizing ability, the oxidation rate and the choice
in response to the different compounds is very high. Therefore you need to generate OH
radicals from the common oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide through a chemical
reaction (H2Os/Fe2+, O3/H2O2, O3/catalyst), or by UV radiation energy (O3/UV, H2O2/UV,
O3+H2O2/UV, TiO2/UV) and high energy (ultrasound, gamma rays, X-rays, electron
eams,…).

Process of creating OH radicals

Reaction mechanism and mode of reaction of hydroxyl OH

OH radicals were formed, afterwards a serie of reactions happened and a new serie of
original works is build. Therefore, you have to consider the formation of hydroxyl radicals
otherwise a serie of reactions that occur in solution is triggered. Because of the reaction of
hydroxyl radicals suddenly occurs and the process create various intermediate products, it is
difficult to predict all intermediate oxidation products generated in the process. Hydroxyl
radicals can enable pollutant effects of the following manner:

 Reactions with unsaturated compounds, linear or aromatic ring, hydroxylated to create

original works.
 Reactions with saturated or unsaturated compounds, forming new and original works.
 Electronic exchange reactions create new ion activity:
 Because of the free radicals the reaction continues to develop. According to the type of
chain reaction inorganic (mineralized) full or broken chains are generated.

Desire for the ultimative destination of the oxidation of pollutants in wastewater is

“inorganic” simple and non-toxic. Namely:

- Carbon into carbon dioxide

- Hydrogen into water
- Phosphorus into phosphate or phosphoric acid
- Sulfur into sulfate
- Nitrogen into acid halides
- Inorganic compounds into a higher oxidation state from Fe2+ to Fe3+

Reaction process in the system AOP/GREE

Based on the features and the importance of OH radicals there is virtually no choice when
reacting with different substances except to oxidize and decompose them. Meanwhile, for
other common oxidizing agents, the process cannot thoroughly occur with all compounds and
effective Oxidations.
