Main advantages:
- Complete peripheral equipment and accessories allows perfect operational control and fine
setting of the backwash.
Main applications:
- Tertiary treatment.
- Algae removal.
The backwash of the sand is the most important process parameter for this type of filter.
The sand is taken from the bottom and is pumped by an airlift into the washing chamber.
From there it falls back on the top of the sand bed.
The quality of the filtered water depends on the size of the sand and on the sand backwash
rate. Therefore the KS FILTER is equipped with a sophisticated and carefully sized double
backwash facility. This design allows a wide variation and fine setting of the backwash
parameters.
Eight sizes available: 1,5 to 7 m2 filtration area with 1 or 2 m deep sand filter.

WATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY OF GREE –AFBR TECHNOLOGY
1. INTRODUCTION
FBR (Fixed Bed Reactor) technology is used by GREE. It is used to handle dissolved organic
substances in wastewater as well as a number of inorganic substances such as H 2S, sulfide,
ammonia, nitrogen,…
Based on the activity of microorganisms which decompose organic pollutants to food for
growth and development, the FBR system (Fixed Bed Reactor) is integrated in this process. It
combined the three biological activated sludge processes. The process of denitrification,
phosphorus and the growth of microorganisms which stick on the exposed materials located
in the system. Condition for the application of the FBR (Fixed Bed Reactor) is the isolated and
efficient symbiotic of the three microorganisms:
AFBR (Advance Fixed Bed Reactor) is an advancement of the FBR technology developed by
GREE. To the system sensor was added a system DO and an automatic control system. The
automatic control system provides oxygen to help regulate the amount of oxygen in the
water. It ensures an optimal concentration of oxygen, superior processing efficiency and save
power consumption.
In the course of operating a wastewater treatment system, the most significant costs are
energy costs and consumption of chemicals. The fine bubble air distribution system in the
AFBR which was designed by GREE can increase the amount of dissolved oxygen in water up
to 28 %. The implementation of a high-performance process can save the power
consumption and can level about 40 % of oxygen. Moreover, the AFBR can minimize the use
of chemicals by increasing the MLSS concentration of the microorganisms.

The AFBR system of Gree is able to adjust the reduction of the air blower capacity when the
project is the first time in the process of operation. That the project is not operating at full

The microorganisms break down the organic substances in wastewater and collect energy to
transform into new cells. Only one fraction of organic substance is oxidized completely to
CO2, H2O, NO3-, SO42-,… In general, micro es in activated sludge systems exist of many
different coexisting bacteria.
Process of suspending activated sludge in the AFBR system leads the organic substances to
grow as floating material. Decomposition occurs when the organic substances is in contact
with wastewater sludge in continuous aeration conditions. The aeration is to ensure the

required supply of oxygen in activated sludge and maintained in a suspended state. The rate
of leading dissolved oxygen in the activated sludge tank depends on:
The ratio of the amount of food (CHC in wastewater) and microorganisms: the
ratio F/M;
Temperature;
Growth and physiological activity of microorganisms;
Concentration of toxic products accumulated in the metabolic process;
Cellular quality
Dissolved oxygen.
Organic substances are decomposed by microbial populations bond on the layer of filter
material. The organic substances in waste water will be absorbed in the microbial membrane
0.1-0.2 mm thick and will be decomposed by aerobic microorganisms. When microorganisms
grow and develop, the film thickness increases, so the oxygen will be consumed before it
spread in all biological membrane thickness. Thus, discretionary environment is formed close
to the surface of the filter material.
When the film thickness increases, the process of assimilation of organic substances occurred
before they come into contact with microorganisms near the surface of the filter material. As
a result the microorganisms in this intracellular decomposition are not longer able to stick on
the surface filtration and drift.

Denitrification (N)
The compound of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) causes eutrophication in wastewater. The
most popular method to remove P from wastewater is still physical and chemical combined
with high treatment costs.
Nitrification takes place in two steps, starting with ammonia is converted into nitrite by
Nitrosomonas, then nitrite oxidized to nitrate by Nitrobacter. Two types of bacteria in AFBR
system are autotrophic. As a carbon source they use carbon dioxide in their cells according to
the reaction equation:
NO3 NO3
NH 4 N2 NH 4 N2
a) b)
Under the effect of two microorganisms NH3 will be oxidized and becomes NO2 and NH2OH,
the final product is NO2.
In terms of molecular dynamics, the two electrons generated from reaction (2) will be used
for reaction (1). Two left electrons from energy transport will play a role for the final stage of
the oxidation process by creating a proton dynamics.
Oxidation of nitrite:

GREE
During the process of denitrification bacteria like denitrobacillus, moraxella, thiobacillus,
pseudomonas,… remove nitrate. Nitrate and nitrite will e converted into N2O and nitrogen-
free according to the following reaction equation:
Phosphorus is a very important element in the life of every cell. The total dry weight of each
microbial cell consists of 1-3 % Phosphorus. For humans, phosphorus is an indispensable
component in genetic structure of DNA, RNA.
Phosphorus is also an important source of nutrients. It plays a role in the process of growth,
development and reproduction of microorganisms in the AFBR symbiotic microflora.
To remove Nitrogen & Phosphorus by biological methods with AFBR technology will bring high
processing efficiency and low operating costs. The AFBR technology is compact and easy to
block. In near future it has the prospect of wide application, especially for the treatment of
civil and industrial projects in Vietnam.

WATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY OF GREE – AOP TECHNOLOGY
1. ABOUT AOP
Advanced oxidation processes are defined as oxidation decomposition processes based on the
free activity of the hydroxyl (OH), which was created in this processes. Hydroxyl radicals are
one of the most powerful oxidizing agents. Original they are not biodegradable. Hydroxyl
radicals choose all organic compounds, even the most persistent compounds and turn them
into inorganic, non-toxic compounds (also known as mineralization) such as CO2, H2O,
inorganic acid…
Common oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide, ozon,… can improve their oxidation y
different reactions to produce hydroxyl radicals, if they perform indirect oxidation via
hydroxyl. So the process is called advanced oxidation process AOP (Advanced Oxidation
Process).
Advanced oxidation technologies have an important role in promoting the oxidation process
and helping decompose a variety of organic pollutants in wastewater. Advanced oxidation
processes are suitable and efficient to decompose persistent organic pollutants (POPs),
halogenated hydrocarbons (trihalomehtane, trichlorethane, trichloroethylene, etc.), aromatic
hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, etc.), PCBs, nitrophenol, plant
protection chemicals, dioxine and furans, dyes, surface-active su stances,…

Due to hydroxyl radicals (OH) with strong oxidizing ability, the oxidation rate and the choice
in response to the different compounds is very high. Therefore you need to generate OH
radicals from the common oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide through a chemical
reaction (H2Os/Fe2+, O3/H2O2, O3/catalyst), or by UV radiation energy (O3/UV, H2O2/UV,
O3+H2O2/UV, TiO2/UV) and high energy (ultrasound, gamma rays, X-rays, electron
eams,…).

GREE
OH radicals were formed, afterwards a serie of reactions happened and a new serie of
original works is build. Therefore, you have to consider the formation of hydroxyl radicals
otherwise a serie of reactions that occur in solution is triggered. Because of the reaction of
hydroxyl radicals suddenly occurs and the process create various intermediate products, it is
difficult to predict all intermediate oxidation products generated in the process. Hydroxyl
radicals can enable pollutant effects of the following manner:
Based on the features and the importance of OH radicals there is virtually no choice when
reacting with different substances except to oxidize and decompose them. Meanwhile, for
other common oxidizing agents, the process cannot thoroughly occur with all compounds and
effective Oxidations.
3. APPLICATIONS
AOP technology for oxidation is suitable for use in the following fields:
- Wastewater industry.
