Class 7230 JUNE, 1989 Three Phase, Liquid Filled Compartmental Type Pad Mounted Transformers SQUARE D COMPANY Dedicated To Growin + Committed To Quality EEL PAD MOUNTED TRANSFORMERS APPLICATION DATA JUNE, 1989 ‘Three-phase, pad! mounted transformers for use on underground power distribution systems meet modem design requirements for flexibility and provide a visually pleasing installation. Tamperproof construction allows installation in locations accessible to he general public without the need for protective fencing or Vaults. They ate ideally suited for apartment buildings, schools, hospitals, shopping centers. commercial buildings or industria sites. Standard sizes range Irom 75 KVA through 5000 KVA ‘with primary ratings from 2400 to 34500 volts. The design meets all applicable industry standards of ANSI, NEMA and IEEE. “Tho transformer consists of a core and coil assembly de- signed to reduce operating losses and to provide adequate ‘mechanical strength should a system fault occur. 75 through 5000 KVA core-coil assemblies are of the fivelegged de- sign with wound cores. By utilizing the five-legged design ‘on wye-wye connected transformers, the possibilty of tank heating due to stray flux paths under short circuit condi tions is eliminated. Computer design techniques result in a core-coil assembly with high efficiency and low losses for the most economical operating characteristics Strip aluminum secondary windings offer high axial short ‘ircuit strength and fast coil heat dissipation. Standard 65°C. rise construction with diamond patterned, thermally up- ‘graded Kraft and oi insulation assures long life. Improved methods of core and coil clamping eliminate external stresses to permit the core laminations to remain relaxed in the "as annealed" position, thus reducing core losses and noise levels. Primary winding tap leads are connected to a {ap changer (de-energized operation only) with the operating handle brought through the tank wall, There is no need to ‘pen the transformer tank for voltage adjustment. TE (© Spare conga 507 APPLICATION DATA ‘TANK AND COMPARTMENTS ee PAD MOUNTED TRANSFORMERS Ea PEL The transformer tank and terminal compartment are de- signed to make one complete weatherproof, tamperproof as- sembly. The terminal compartment is separated into high voltage and low voltage sections by a steel burrier, and is bolted to the transformer tank front wall. Each compartment section has an individual door and they are mechanically in- terlocked to prevent opening the high voltage section door until the low voltage door has been opened and the security boll removed. A three-point pin-type latch prevents prying. ‘the low voltage door open. The extemal handle has padlock. provisions. Liftoff type stainless steel hinges are furnished 50 that the doors may be removed during installation, and door stops are provided. The compartment sill is removable to allow the transformer to be rolled into position over con- duit stubs, ‘The transformer tank is designed to withstand internal pres- sures of 7 psi without permanent distortion. Heavy duty lift ing ears and jacking pads are arc welded to the tank; and, in addition, the tank base is constructed to allow rolling or skid- ding in any direction. Oil preservation is by the sealed tank ‘method. A welded tank cover is supplied with a tamperproof hhandhole bolted and gasketed to the cover. All welds are ground smooth and the unit cleaned, primed and given a finish coat of paint. The standard color is outdoor green, Munsell No. 7GY3.29/1.5, All surfaces of tank are shot-blasted before priming. ‘The number and location of cooling panels on the trans- former tank is dictated by the design. The smaller trans- formers (through 112.5 KVA) usually require no cooling panels. When required, flat panel-type radiators are used on these as well asthe larger units. Radiators are located on the rear ofthe transformer and in some cases on the sides. coer PAD MOUNTED TRANSFORMERS APPLICATION DATA JUNE, 1989 HIGH AND LOW VOLTAGE TERMINATORS ‘Compartment type pad mounted transformers are designed for underground entrance of primary and secondary conductors. Provisions for live or dead front primary termination on radial or loop feed services are available. ‘Typical construction is shown below. A 200 ampere tie between bushings is used on loop feed constructed transformers. Op- tional 600 ampere construction is available, HIGH VOLTAGE TERMINATIONS When live front (ANSI C57.12.22) construction is fur- nished, wet process electrical grade porcelain bushings with eyebolt terminals are provided. Bushings are externally ‘clamped to the tank wall and sealed with a nitrile gasket. Eyebolt terminals suitable for either copper or aluminum ‘conductors are used. 75 through 500 KVA transformers have terminals for #8 through #2/0 wire: 750 through 2500 KV. transformers have terminals for #210 through 300 MCM ca- ble. Spade type terminals with two 9/16" diameter boles can be furnished as an option, PAEEEB Ans) BSE owe Dead front construction (ANSI C57.12.26) with provisions for high voltage elbow terminators (Separable Insulated Connectors, ANSI C119.2) is available in all voltage rat: ings. The transformer is supplied with either one piece ‘molded load break bushings or universal bushing wells for user supplied load break bushing inserts. The plug-in load break elbows and bushing are rated 200 amperes and suitable for three phase switching (21.1 KV line to ground maxi- ‘mum). 600 ampere rated elbows and bushings have bolted connections which are separable with hot line tools under de- ‘energized conditions. Parking stands are welded to the tank \all beside the bushing to accommodate accessory stand-off insulators for elbow storage during switching, LOW VOLTAGE TERMINATIONS, Secondary terminals are sealed into molded epoxy bushings and externally clamped to the tank wall. 75 through 500 KVA transformers have four hole H spade terminals with bushings in a staggered arrangement; 750 through 2500 KVA transformers have six hole J spade terminals mounted as shown on the tank wall. The low voltage neutral is brought out through an insulated bushing and grounded to the tank wall with a removable grounding strap. (Note: ‘When wye-wye connected transformers are furnished, the high voltage neutral is connected internally with a removable link to the low voltage neutral and brought out through the low voltage neutral SQUARE D company ——_________[D]] JUNE, 1909, PAD MOUNTED TRANSFORMERS APPLICATION DATA, ‘STANDARD FEATURES, OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES we ee eA eee (]—___ sauare peony PAD MOUNTED TRANSFORMERS. APPLICATION DATA JUNE, 1909, PRIMARY SWITCH & FUSE ARRANGEMENTS. Oil immersed switches are available for radial or loop feed system switching in three current ratings. The three phase ‘gang operated switch has a spring loaded mechanism for load break and latch operation. The switch is mounted near the core and coil assembly, for low cable capacitance: and with simultaneous three phase switching the possibility of ferroresonance is reduced. Available in ratings through (600 A. at 15 KV, 300 A. at 25 KV and 200 A. al 35 KV. Six distinctly different kinds of fuse protection are of- fered on Pad Mounted Transformers, depending on cus- tomer needs, and the size and rating of the transformers. | Weak link expulsion fuses are mounted under oit within the tank structure. The maintenance handhole cover must bbe removed to replace the fuse elements. The elements are designed to interrupt excessive primary currents due to either internal transformer failures, long-time over- loading, or some secondary system fault conditions. 2. Bay-O-Net fuses are hook stick removable from the HV compartment and are available with cither overload or fault sensing under oil expulsion elements, The overload fuse element is temperature and current sensitive to pro {ect against overloads and transformer overheating. The fault sensing element is current sensitive only, allowing protection against higher overload or fault currents. Each Bay-O-Net is supplied with a series connected isolation link mounted under oil. This isolation link melts only when exposed to fault currents in excess of the Bay-O- Net ratings. The fuses have a maximum RMS symmet- rical fault current rating of 3500 amps. at 8.3 kV L-G of 1800 amps. at 14.4 kV L-L. The Bay-O-Net has a load break rating of 75 amps. at 8.3 kV and 14.4 KV. Fuse sizes are selected to match the transformer KVA, pri- marily kV, and inrush characteristics. Bay-O-Net current timiting fuses are hook stick remov- able from the HV compartment and are C-rated, full range, non-expulsion, under oi, silver sand type. Single fuse applications are loadbreak and fusible to 40 amps. Parallel applications afe non-loadbreak and fusible to 80 amps. The fuse elements have 2 minimum fault current rating of 40,000 amps RMS symmetrical Weak link expulsion fuses in series with partial range current limiting elements are available. The weak link elements are coordinated to clear low level faults, the ‘current limiting elements clear only higher level faults. Al fuses are under oil and accessible only by removing the maintenance handhole. Bay-O-Net overload or fault sensing fuse elements in se- s with partial range current limiting elements are avail able. The Bay-O-Net elements are coordinated to clear low level secondary faults or overloads. The current lim- iting elements clear only higher level faults and are lo ‘cated under oil within the tank and are accessible only by removing the maintenance hole, Dry Well Canisters are sealed hook stick operated fuse holders which extend into the tank below the oil level and utilize C-rated full range silver sand current limiting fuses. This fused assembly has a maximum RMS sym- metrical fault rating of 40,000 amps. (50,000 amps. is available when specified). Single fuse applications are loadbreak at 20 amp max 25 kV, 40 amps max. at IS kV, and 100 amps max. at SkV. Parallel applications are non. loadbreak. A mechanical interlock between the canisters ‘and a separate gang operated oil switch is available at ad- Jitional cost.
