4 Responsibilities
Construction Manager

 Coordinates, monitoring and ensures compliance with this procedure

 Ensure that the storage and handling process is carried out as indicated in
this procedure
 Plan and allocate the necessary resources for warehouse facilities and
management
 Define supplies required on site

Quality Manager

 Ensure the dissemination of this procedure

 Verify the correct storage and handling of consumables as indicated in the
procedure
 Require to its personnel perform a technical inspection of consumables,
furnaces when required
 Issue non-conformity of the non-conforming product to the supplier

Warehouse Manager

 Ensure operational operation and physical and administrative control of

warehouse supplies
 inform quality when consumables are not in conformity
 control the conditions and compliance of storage, preservation, protection,
and rotation of consumables
 control the dispatch of consumables to the shop and site
5 Receiving of Welding Consumables
The receipt of welding consumables will be registered inSG-CD-FR-181 format It shall
be verified at the reception in the warehouse that any container or container of welding
consumable has at least the following characteristics:

 Identification of the AWS standard and/or classification of the consumable (AWS

or other standard applicable to welding consumables), in accordance with the
specifications of the code used in the purchase order.

 Indication of the diameter of the consumable for the case of electrodes for the
SMAW, wires for FCAW and rods for GTAW.

 Batch number and/or lots in the case of consumables for which a certificate of
chemical composition and/or mechanical properties has been requested. This
number must match the form on the certificate.

 The container must be sealed, airtight, without evidence of damage, shocks,

visible openings, or exposure to moisture.

 Consumables that do not meet the criteria set forth herein will be discarded and
segregated for the project.

6 Delivery of Welding Consumables

All those involved in the process of delivery and receipt of welding consumables are
responsible for verifying that, in the transfer of consumables, they are in adequate
condition.

The following are the conditions that, if detected, should be an immediate reason for
rejection of consumables:

 Electrodes coated with damaged, detached, cracked, or wet coatings

 Lack of identification or traceability of grade or type

 Consumables with visible corrosion or oxidation

 Broken GMAW FCAW wire support reels

the delivery of consumables to the workshop to proceed with welding will be made by
receipt of a "CONSUMPTION VOUCHER" (SG-CD-FR-182), which will be issued by the
welding foreman.

In the description of the CONSUMPTION VOUCHER the foreman will place the
required diameter followed by AWS classification.

At the time of receiving the CONSUMPTION VOUCHER, the warehouse responsible

will place in the description the lot number and / or casting number of the material
supplied to the workshop.
The low hydrogen electrodes will be delivered to the workshop in portable ovens which
would have a temperature of 90 °C to 120 °C.

Consumable material back to the warehouse (FCAW unfinished rolls and/or GTAW bare
rods) will be taken back to the maintenance room and delivered to the workshop again
daily or at the end of the shift

The material returned to the warehouse (low hydrogen electrodes) will be taken to the
maintenance furnaces

 Low hydrogen electrodes:

 Storing ambient temperature/humidity is not recommended

 to be stored in maintenance furnaces at 125°C - 150°C

 Drying conditions 260°C - 425°C for 1 – 2 hours

Electrodes once issued and returned may be re-cycled through re-baking. The re-
baking shall be done in the separated partition having “RETURN” label in the baking
equipment, and re-cycling shall be limited to one (1) time. To identify the re-baked
electrodes, it shall be marked with black color on the grip end of the electrodes while it
is put into a portable warmer for issuing to welder. In case the re-issued electrode is
returned again, it shall be segregated and not be used for main parts.

7 Storage

The following care should be taken when storing welding consumables:

 Check that the manufacturer has marked and identified each material box with
the necessary information for the traceability of the product.

 Try to not mix different types of consumables in the same oven compartment or
at least correctly separated.

 All materials should be stored in a clean, dry, and dust-free room with a
controlled environment.

 Storage should be avoided in direct contact with the floor or walls.

 To protect consumables from moisture that is absorbed during storage,

consumables shall be stored in a room with a maximum relative humidity of 60%
and at a temperature 2 °C above external ambient temperature up to 40 °C
maximum. lamps or incandescent resistors should be installed until it is met.

 Temperature fluctuations should be avoided to avoid condensation.

 Precautions should be taken to use old lots before new batches.

 Under conditions and non-open packages, coated electrodes can be stored for
up to 2 years.

 The following table shows the classification of consumables to use in the project
AWS CLASSIFICATION PROCESS
E-7018 SMAW
ER70S-6 GTAW
E71T-1 FCAW
ER-316L GTAW

8 Re-backing
 Electrodes coated with low hydrogen returned at the end of the shift should be
inspected to prevent them from being stored with grease residue, mechanical
damage or foreign materials and particles.

 As a rule, it is advisable to heat the coated electrodes and fluxes until they reach
the appropriate temperature, before starting the welding process.

 Before starting the heating process, the electrodes should be carefully removed
from the packages and put in the oven. Under no circumstances should the
height of the electrode batteries in the furnace exceed the height and
temperature recommended by the manufacturer.

 The input materials must be kept in the oven until they reach the temperature
indicated by the manufacturer.

 Intermediate storage of coated electrodes, and maintenance furnaces to:

 125°C - 150 °C, for a maximum of 3 weeks.

 Intermediate storage in portable maintenance furnaces to:

 90°C to 120 °C, for a maximum of 8 hours.

 should be kept for at least 2 hours at the re-baking temperature. The electrodes
can be re-baked just one time.

 Re-baking can be avoided by considering the estimated number of electrodes to

be used.

9 Temperature Verification Method

For temperature control in the maintenance furnace will be verified with a calibrated
pyrometer and its respective potentiometer for temperature regulation and
measurement.
The temperature in the ovens will be controlled by means of a record sheet with the
necessary details SG-CD-FR183 (See attached)

10 Safety Considerations
 When using the oven, staff should wear gloves that protect them from the high
temperatures emitted by the furnace and by the electrodes themselves.

 Keep ovens in a safe place and covered by water protection.
