NARRATIVE PERTEMUAN PERTAMA KELAS 10

LKPD 1
Task 1
A. Before you learn in detailed, Read this
This is the text organization of story. It is part of Narrative that you will learn more in this
chapter.
Like other Narrative, short stories have the following structure
1. Orientation : It introduce the main characters and the setting both the time and
the place
2. Complication : This parts introduces a problem the main characters face
3. Resolution : The main characters find a solution for their problem
4. Coda / Re-orientation : This parts gives evaluation and points out moral of
the story

B. Find one story, then fill this table by depict the characters, both appearance dan
personalities

1. One day a cat and a fox were having a conversation. The fox, who was conceited
creature, boasted how clever she was. “Why I know at least a hundred tricks to get
away from our mutual enemies, the dog, she said.
“I know only one trick to get away from dogs, said the cat. “You should teach me
some of yours!”

2. Once upon a time, there was a man who was living in north Sumatra. He lived in a
simple hut in a farming field. He did some gardening and fishing for his daily life. One
day, he caught a big golden fish. Surprisingly the fish turned into a beautiful princess.
He felt in love and proposed her to be his wife. She asked the man to keep secret of
her. But the man broken his promise. Finally the woman never stopped her crying
and prayed. Soon there was a big earthquake followed by nonstop pouring rain. The
whole are got flooded and became Lake Toba. She turned into a fish again.

3. One day, there was a queen sitting near a very beautiful window while tailoring and
seeing the snow. Accidentally, her finger was pierced by a sewing needle so that
three drops of blood dripped out. The drops of blood fell down on the snow. The red
color of blood which was stuck in the white of the snow looked very pretty. Suddenly
the queen thought “If only I had a child whose skin were as white as snow and
whose lips were red as blood” Finally a queen gave birth of a very pretty princess
whose skin was as white as snow and whose lips as red as blood. The queen grew up
as a very pretty and kind hearted girl. She was called snow white,

4. In the town of Verona there lived two families, the Capulets and the Montagues.
They engaged in a bitter feud. Among the Montagues was Romeo, a hot blooded
young man with an eye for the ladies. One day, Romeo attended the feast of the
Capulets’, a costume party where he expected to meet his love, Rosaline, a haughty
beauty from a well to do family. Once there, however, Romeo’s eyes felt upon Juliet,
and he thought Rosaline no more.
Task 2. Read the story and do the following task!
The Model Millionaire

Hughie Erskine was a very good-looking young man, Men and women liked him very
much because he never said an unkind word about anyone. But he was not rich and clever.
He was always changing his job.
Hughie loved a girl named Laura Merton, the daughter of a retired colonel. Laura loved
him too, but her father did not allow them to marry unless Hughie could provide ten
thousand pounds.
One morning Hughie visited his friend, Alan Trevor. Trevor was a famous painter. At
that time Alan was finishing a full-sized picture of a beggar man. The beggar was standing on
a stage in a corner of the room. The beggar looked so miserable that Hughie felt sorry for
him. When Alan went out of the room, Hughie gave the beggar a sovereign, the only thing he
had in his pocket. Then he said goodbye to Alan.
That night Hughie went to the Palette Club. There he met Alan. Alan told Hughie about
the old beggar he had used as his model. The beggar asked Alan about Hughie and Alan
Frankly told about Hughie’s private life. Later Alan revealed who the beggar was. He was
Baron Hausberg, one of the richest men in Europe. Hughie was very starlet, but also angry
with Alan because Alan had told his private life to Baron Hausberg. Hughie walked unhappily,
leaving Alan laughing loudly.
The next morning while Hughie was having his breakfast, a messenger from Baron
Hausberg came and handed a letter from the baron to Hughie. Hughie wondered what was
inside the envelope. He opened the envelope with a pounding heart. To his surprise, there
was a cheque for ten thousand pounds as a wedding present to Hughie and Laura. Hughie
could not convey in words how happy he was because he could marry Laura.
At the wedding party, Alan remarked, “Millionaire models were rare enough but model
millionaires were rare still.

Grammar Focus
SIMPLE PAST TENSE
A long time ago, in a small village near the beach in West Sumatra lived a woman and
her son, Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang and his mother had to live hard because his father
had passed away when he was a baby
One day, when malin Kundang was sailing, he was a merchant’s ship being raided by
a band of pirates.With his bravery, Malin Kundang helped the merchant defeat the pirates.
To thank him, the merchant allowed Malin Kundang to sail with him. Malin Kundang agreed
and left his mother alone.
Many years later, Malin Kundang became wealthy. When he was sailing on his trading
journey, his ship landed on a coast near a small village. The local people recognized that he
was Malin Kundang.
Malin Kundang’s mother ran to the beach to meet the new rich merchant. She wanted
to hug him to release her sadness of being lonely after a long time. When his mother came
near him. Malin Kundang who was with his beautiful wife and his ship crews denied that she
was his mother. After that he ordered his crews to set sail to leave the old woman who was
then full of sadness and anger. Finally, she cursed Malin Kundang and he was thrown out to
a small island and turned into a stone.
Note : The words in the bold type are called adverbs of time
- To show the time signals of events that happened in the past = a long time ago, one day,
many years later, after that.
- To show adverbs of time for simple past tense = when he was a baby, when Malin Kundang
was sailing, when his mother came near him.
