Introduction of Direct Selling

Direct selling is selling products directly to consumers in a non-retail
environment. Instead, sales occur at home, work, online, or other non-store
locations.
Direct selling is a retail channel used by top global brands and smaller,
entrepreneurial companies to market products and services to consumers.
... Direct selling consultants work on their own, but affiliate with a company
that uses the channel, retaining the freedom to run a business on their own
terms.
Direct selling consists of two main business models: single-level marketing, in
which a direct seller makes money by buying products from a parent organization
and selling them directly to customers, and multi-level marketing (also known
as network marketing or person-to-person marketing), in which the direct seller may
earn money from both direct sales to customers and by sponsoring new direct
sellers and potentially earning a commission from their efforts.
According to the FTC: "Direct selling is a blanket term that encompasses a variety of
business forms premised on person-to-person selling in locations other than a retail
establishment, such as social media platforms or the home of the salesperson or
prospective customer."[2]
Modern direct selling includes sales made through the party plan, one-on-one
demonstrations, and other personal contact arrangements as well as internet sales.
Some sources have defined direct selling as: "The direct personal presentation,
demonstration, and sale of products and services to consumers, usually in their
homes or at their jobs.
In this project we are going to study in depth about Direct Selling Concept in Retail
regarding how the sell is made, what sorts of customers prefer to buy the direct
selling services and products, what products are available to be purchased, who
the people are there to provide the services and what challenges they face in
making customers, their rewards for the same and eventually limitations of the
project and findings, recommendations and suggestions for the project.
Direct selling is a marketing strategy in which the sales force is compensated not
only for sales which are personally generated, but also for the sales of others who
are recruited, creating a down line of distributors and a hierarchy of multiple levels
of compensation. It is a kind of network or referral marketing. A company can be
termed MLM when the products or services are distributed by independent
distributors.
Multi-level marketing is a legitimate business strategy, though it is controversial.
One problem is that pyramid schemes, which use money from new recruits to pay
6|PagE
the people at the top, often take advantage of people by pretending to be engaged
in legitimate multi-level marketing. Pyramid schemes can sometimes be spotted
by their greater focus on recruitment than on product sales.
History of Direct selling
Direct selling , also called Multi Level marketing [1] or pyramid selling, Network
marketing is a controversial[5] marketing strategy for the sale of products or services
where the revenue of the MLM company is derived from a non-
salaried workforce selling the company's products or services, while the earnings of
the participants are derived from a pyramid-shaped or binary
compensation commission system. An MLM strategy may be an illegal pyramid
scheme
In multi-level marketing, the compensation plan theoretically pays out to participants
only from two potential revenue streams. The first is paid out from commissions of
sales made by the participants directly to their own retail customers. The second is
paid out from commissions based upon the wholesale purchases made by other
distributors below the participant who have recruited those other participants into the
MLM; in the organizational hierarchy of MLMs, these participants are referred to as
one's down line distributors.
MLM salespeople are, therefore, expected to sell products directly to end-user retail
consumers by means of relationship referrals and word of mouth marketing, but
more importantly they are incentivized to recruit others to join the company's
distribution chain as fellow salespeople so that these can become down line
distributors. According to a report that studied the business models of 350 MLMs in
the United States, published on the Federal Trade Commission's website, at least
99% of people who join MLM companies lose money. Nonetheless, MLMs function
because downline participants are encouraged to hold onto the belief that they can
achieve large returns, while the statistical improbability of this is de-emphasised.
MLMs have been made illegal or otherwise strictly regulated in some jurisdictions as
merely variations of the traditional pyramid scheme, including in mainland China.
It is generally accepted that the first multi-level marketing plan was introduced in
1945 by the California Vitamin Company (shortly afterwards to become Neutralise).
The plan allowed Neutralise distributors with at least 25 regular customers to recruit
new distributors and draw a 3 percent commission from their sales. Unlike
traditional direct selling, this was an ongoing payment whenever the customer re-
ordered; allowing direct sellers to build a sales organization that could generate a
residual-like income.(1)
The 1980s saw a major shift as companies began managing the stocking and
distribution of products as well as commission payments to their members. This
allowed members to focus on selling. Today, most MLM companies act as
logistics companies that take orders, ship products and calculate and pay
commissions.

With the arrival of the Internet, MLM companies have started to go online. Many
established MLM companies began to use the Internet to promote their
7|PagE
products. At the same time, many other new MLM companies started their
businesses using the Internet, a model generally called online MLM.

SCOPE OF DIRECT SELLING

MUMBAI: The department of industrial policy and promotion is pushing for
implementation of guidelines for direct selling industry, which is slated to touch Rs
645 billion by 2025, according to a report by FICCI and KPMG.
According to a statement, Amitabh Kant, secretary, DIPP, ministry of commerce and
industry, said that direct selling will have to be given a greater thrust as it empowers
women, MSMEs and promotes manufacturing in India. Kant was speaking at FICCI
Direct 2015, an annual event for the direct selling industry.
Kant said the industry has a potential to even grow beyond the projected level to Rs
1,000 billion by 2025.
The direct selling industry, which includes companies like Amway, Oriflame,
Tupperware, among others, has been seeking clarity in definition and a regulatory
framework for the industry. Kant assured that DIPP has already submitted the draft
guidelines to Ministry of Consumer Affairs for the same.
New Delhi: Direct selling sector is poised to employ more than 18 million by 2025
and as per industry estimates, the Direct Selling industry in India, which
currently ranks No. 15, globally, is expected to grow at a Compounded Annual
Growth Rate (CAGR) of about 4.8 percent to reach Rs 15,930 crore by 2021.

This proves that the Direct Selling Industry is flourishing and illustrates its potential
with the continued rate of growth -- increasing at an impressive rate of 12.1% Y-o-Y.

Another interesting trend that is noticeable is that the sector has been instrumental
in employment generation for nearly 122 million Indians who lost their jobs this due
to the pandemic.

Er.Sanjay Maurya Managing Director, INWAY RETAILS Pvt Ltd., said, "Direct
Selling is one of the fastest-growing sectors in India today. Despite these
challenging times, the sector has witnessed spectacular growth in the last three
quarters. At Vestige, we have provided an alternative career opportunity to millions
during the pandemic period. We are looking forward to 2021 and we hope to
continue to be a key player in the Direct Selling Industry's rapid growth by
empowering people."

Initiatives like 'Vocal for Local' and 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' encouraged Indians to
explore the option of buying and selling locally made products via the direct selling
route, which entails low investments and high returns. This not only boosted local
manufacturing but also established a sense of ownership as well as determination
amongst budding entrepreneurs to succeed. In India, the Direct Selling industry has
provided additional income opportunities to its people and has significantly promoted
micro-entrepreneurship. In FY 2018-19, there were 5.7 million direct sellers. These
numbers are projected to grow exponentially to 18.1 million by 2025.
8|PagE
The sector has also empowered women in a significant way right since its inception.
There are almost 2.1 million women today who are at the heart of this industry and
have gone on to become successful entrepreneurs.

VIEWS OF SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE

1 - Rolf Kipp

Rolf Kipp, one of the top earners in network marketing business earns his position

in the top 5 successful personalities. He is popular with a tagline – “German top

earner” in Forever. He is one of the top earners of Forever Living products. Back

in 1995, when he joins inside the FLP (Forever Living Products), no one expected

him to gain the top earner position.During the time of joining, German people

weren’t aware of the FLP, and the land was unexplored. Well, Rolf Kipp came to

know about FLP during a business trip in Miami and became obsessed with the

products. As per sources, a magazine ad or article gained his attention, “Forever”

expands to Europe. A wonderful opportunity was before him, and Rolf accepted

it.From real-life struggles, this decision woke him up. He saw “Forever” as a

company with real products, and he explored this in the best marketing way.

Initially, he worked as part-time for about a year and a half and afterward, he

found a bright future in the marketing world. He chose this secondary source as

the main focus of income thereafter, and the decision was perfect. The future also

supports this decision, and the achievements seem to be the best evidence of

such an act.In 2013, Rolf received 9, 00,000 Euros as a bonus, and is a record-

breaker. Later on, in 2015 he again received with a high bonus. From nowhere to

a millionaire, Perfect, Isn’t it?

2 - Brian McClure

Yet another famous personality in the direct selling industry, and a network

marketing success story who opened up the world of opportunities in the

10 | P a g E

marketing world. This time “Ambit” was the channel to his successful life. Ambit is

a retail energy supply company who like to improve the competition in energy

supply with multiple private suppliers. If there are options to choose from, the

probability of bringing down the charges of electricity and gas is no more a cock

and bull story.Buy energy and supply it to reach the customers is the Ambit way

of working.rian was bright from the beginning itself, and he began his journey

from the college time itself. He proved his talent in its best ways, and it was

perfect for marketing and sales.

He even brought his college to the top position in ‘Miller beer’ sales on the

campus. LSU (Louisiana State University of Agricultural & Mechanical College)

gained the no.1 position is the campus sales rate. Later on, when he stepped on

the professional life, he showed his excellence out there too. He became CEO of

many organizations, and the success story continued. In 2006, Brian McClure

joined Ambit Energy and he was responsible for the training systems that they put

into action for consultant training and motivation.

The numbers tell his success - $8,400,000 is his annual income as per 2017-18.

Brian, a billionaire can be considered as the best idol for direct selling business.

3 - Kim Hui

Yet another person who proved herself worthy in the direct selling business

through her hard work and devotion to work is also in our top list. Kim Hui is one

of the top earners in the MLM world, and she is presently the Double diamond

director at jeunesse. Kim is from China and rose in the USA.

Yes, like many others she also faced a lot of struggles, and she found her way by

getting inspired by husband’s work (charity). According to reports, K im earned

11 | P a g E

$257 million dollars in 2013. She earns about 6,000,000 per year and is the best

in the industry.

The details of Kim Hui is limited in terms of sources, and the list continues a

perfect network marketing mentorship assets.

4 - Barry Chi & Holly Chen

Barry Chi and Holly Chen stand out in the list, and their success story began after

joining the Amway cooperation. These couples joined the giant network as

distributors, and they utilized the opportunity perfectly. They both were devoted

for marketing and selling the products. They both are from Taiwan and living

there was very expensive.

From first grade teachers to millionaire stage, they had a hard time to reach such

a situation. They both joined Amway in 1982 in Taiwan. A history was written after

such a good move. They started off from family and friends, expanded the

network slowly, and spread the business to Hong Kong. Later on, they covered up

long land of China too.

In 1986 their marketing presence got extended up to the US land. These Chinese

couples studied the U.S market, and the elegance of their marketing touch was

felt by the Chinese immigrants in the USA. And presently, this couple earns about

$6,000,000 annually.

5 - Jeff Roberti

Jeff is one of the best MLM entrepreneurs in the marketing industry that found an

opportunity like others in the list and explored it brilliantly. His life got an elegant

touchback in 1987when he met Jay Martin, founder of NSA (National Safety

12 | P a g E

Associates) and is famous for Juice plus product. Jeff joined with Jay Martin and

created a history.

Again the struggles of life make the best out of a human being, and Jeff was also

a victim. His father was struggling to pay even the medical bills. Later on Jeff

graduated and unfortunately, his father passed away. These struggles made him

take a strong will, and nothing can stop him from that point.

His success stories reveal the willpower and how determined he is. He explored

the opportunity in his job (Juice plus) and currently earning $5,400,000 annually.

We have cut short the list into five because these stories never end. Their

business life is an example of how to be successful in network marketing. Direct

selling business is never a scam unless it follows the rules perfectly. It’s an

opportunity, and many business tycoons talk the better side of this version. The

present U.S president Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, and many such personalities

have talked the good side of network marketing. They all are the greatest

salesmen in the world with the most successful stories.

Explore more, understand the legal side of network marketing business, how

network marketing business ideas evolve, and much more.

ADWANTAGES

Below are the reasons why joining mlm company in India is a great business:

1) Small amount of risk- The small risk involved in multi-level marketing businesses
is among the many benefits that are actively bringing into the business. Most
businesses involve a huge deal of risks, what with the expenses that has to be met
for the facilities, products and services, and salaried individuals. MLM businesses do
not come with that many risks since people can easily join the business by paying a
small fee. More so, this fee entitles the distributor to get discounts on the products
and services being offered by the business. MLM business owners also do not have
to pay for facilities since their home can be the very base of their operations.

2) Huge potential income- There is no record on how much money you can
generate, it depends on your attempt and your decision “how much you want to earn”
as the MLM company doesn’t hold you back. Unlike regular jobs where you earn only
a fixed amount every week or month, despite the amount you work, this provides you
the flexibility of generating as much income as you want. The key of top multi-level
companies is the skills set of a network marketer, you have it and make whatever
income, which is determined by your stamina, dedication, and your willingness.

3) No employees to hire- By far, this is a clear advantage over traditional businesses.

An mlm affiliate program is a business of people independently working together.
Without any employees, it's possible to build a business right from home. This industry
gives you that added benefit, be in business without employees concerns, by having
a network of independent business owners working together towards a common goal.

4) Time Freedom- When you are a business owner, you are creating your own
system and as you build your downlines in network marketing. This is a great
profession for people who have children, or other obligations, where the normal hours
of a 9 - 5 will not allow and keep in mind that when you work from home, or eventually
on a beach, you have cut out wasted commute time. In this glorious profession, you
choose with whom you wish to work with, when you want to work and best of all where
you want to work.
26 | P a g E
5) Huge demand of products- A huge demand for products offered by MLM is also
worth noting. A lot of people are looking for new quality products that can satisfy their
needs. Most of these people are fed up with the commercial brands made available
to them by groceries and shopping centers. As so, you can come in with your MLM products that
are backed with studies and have been proven effective and of great quality.

DISADWANTAGES

Limited response from respondent response may not reveal the

accurate picture as accurate data was not revealed by the respective
respondents.

 It is the process of Time consuming to go to door of customers and take

their valuable time and convince about product.

 Owing to no Advertisement customers do not trust any new-listening

companies.

 Respondent were not giving much to questions though we have honesty

and sincerely tried to present the facts and figures but because of some non

 They feel it cheap to response any Direct Selling Agent because of No Trust.
28 | P a g E

Reasons for failure in MLM

1. The most important reason of a failure on our opinion is a lack of desire.
2. The second reason we would like to mention is a lack of action.
3. The third reason for people to fail in network marketing industry is a lack of
focus
4. The distributor not talking to people.
5. The distributor Not talking to enough people
6. The distributor not talking to the right people
7. Distributor not talking right to people.(25)
8. Lack of Training/No Self Growth
9. No Goals Set
10. Fear.

CONCLUSION

As we know in the present scenario there is a cut-throat competition in the market. The only
way to survive in the market is to attract the customers more and more and to provide the
best services available in the market. As it is discussed in this project about all the factors
that are

responsible for a positive attitude of a consumer to move to a particular shopping mall or a

particular department store. New competitors are entering in to the Indian market. And plus
thing negative resposnse of average customers to Direct Selling Agent So consumer
behavior and consumer’s reaction is an important factor along with satisfaction, which must
be taken into consideration by every Direct Seller. Factors such as service, ambience,
availability of demanded products, variety of product & services, latest trends and fashion
are the main factors which directs a customer to choose a particular company for his/her
shopping.
