About Anna University and CES
Anna University was established on 4th September 1978 as a unitary type of university. It offers higher
education in Engineering, Technology and Allied Sciences relevant to the current and projected needs of the
society. Besides promoting research and disseminating knowledge gained there from, it fosters cooperation
between the academic and industrial communities.
The Department of Civil Engineering of Anna University is the oldest in the Country. It dates back to May 17,
1794, when the East India Company established a Survey School to train military personnel and surveyors. This
has grown to a Civil Engineering School in 1858 and later a Civil Engineering College in 1859.
The Centre for Environmental Studies (CES) was established as a Division of Public Health Engineering under
Civil Engineering Department in the year 1955 with the assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO).
It was developed into Centre for Environmental Studies in 1982. The Centre has made significant contributions
in the field of Environment and has rich tradition of teaching, continuing education, research, consultancy and
extension programs successfully for the past 62 years.

About Dr. R. Pitchai Endowment Lecture

Dr. R. Pitchai was an internationally known Environmental Engineering Professor. He worked as a faculty in
Department of Civil Engineering CEG, Anna University. He had carried out variety of consulting assignment
involving National and International Agencies including WHO, UNEP, UNESCO, UNEIESCAP, and also for FAO in
Peru, South Africa. Dr. R. Pitchai’s significant contributions and Associations brought him several awards, a few
noticeable are: Fellow, Indian National Academy of Engineering; Fellow – Tamil Nadu Academy of Science
(1976); Member – Southern Regional Advisory Board – NEERI, Nagpur (CSIR); Vice president – Association for
Waste Management & Remediation of the Environment (AWARE), IGCAR, Kalpakam.
