Staking out Set Batter Boards

I. Learning Competencies

1. Staking out Set Batter Boards

Objectives

1. Define stake out and batter boards

2. Enumerate the steps in staking and setting batter boards
3. Draw to set stake out and batter boards

II. Background Information

Welcome to the module in Staking out Building Lines. This module contains training materials and
activities for you to complete. You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to
complete each learning outcome of the module. In each learning outcome are Information Sheets, Self-
Checks, Operation Sheets and Job Sheets. Follow these activities on your own. If you have questions,
don't hesitate to ask your facilitator for assistance

What is Batter Boards and stake out?

1. Batter boards - are temporary frames, set beyond the corners of a planned foundation at

precise elevations. These used to hold layout lines indicate the limits of the foundation.
2. Stakes - are the sharpened piece of wood drove into the ground holding the batter boards

Steps in staking and setting batter boards

1. Determine the height of the foundation at any of the four corners of the proposed building,
preferably where the grade stake is.
2. In this corner, drive a stake as a high as the desired height of the foundation.
3. Drive in set of post for the batter boards 3 or more feet away from the corners and along the
side. Drive in the post firmly. Align these posts with a string
4. Move the height of the foundation from the stakes to the corner post of the batter board. This is
done by stretching a string leveled with plumb level from the stake to the post.
5. From the mark of this post, stretch out the string going around the corners of the building and
passing at the side of the batter board posts.
6. Level this string with a plumb level. Stretch the string tight. Star leveling from the corner where
the height of the foundation is established.
7. Mark the batter board posts along the line just leveled. These marks are places for the top of the
batter boards.
8. Nail the batter boards in place, the straight side up and at the marks of the post.
9. Check the squareness of corners before permanently nailing

Tips to Illustrate

1. Rough Deck Layout.

2. Build the Batter Boards.
3. Place the Batter Boards in the Right Location.
4. Attach String Lines to the Batter Board Top Edges.
5. Adjust Batter Board String Lines to Form a Perfect Rectangle of Proper size.

III. ACTIVITIES

Activity I

Directions: In your own words, Define stake out and batter boards. (5 pts. Each)

a. Stake out

b. Batter Boards

2. Differentiate the stake and batter boards? (10 pts.)

Activity 2

Directions: Arrange these steps of staking and setting batter boards in order. (1st Step to last)

1. Check the squareness of corners before permanently nailing

2. Nail the batter boards in place, the straight side up and at the marks of the post.

3. Mark the batter board posts along the line just leveled. These marks are places for the top of the batter
boards.
4. Level this string with a plumb level. Stretch the string tight. Star leveling from the corner where the height
of the foundation is established.

5. From the mark of this post, stretch out the string going around the corners of the building and passing at
the side of the batter board posts.

6. Move the height of the foundation from the stakes to the corner post of the batter board. This is done by
stretching a string leveled with plumb level from the stake to the post.

7. Drive in set of post for the batter boards 3 or more feet away from the corners and along the side. Drive
in the post firmly. Align these posts with a string

8. In this corner, drive a stake as a high as the desired height of the foundation.

IV. CLOSURE

After reading and answering the activities in this module, I believe that you know the tools and
materials that you are going to use in staking out and set batter boards. You should know also the Do’s and
Don’ts in this particular job to avoid accident.

Hoping that you understand the topic and you learned something from this

lesson.

Congratulations!!!
