This document provides an introduction to biostatistics in the context of COVID-19. It defines COVID-19 as a disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is an RNA virus that encodes four structural proteins, most importantly the spike protein. The document discusses how SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted between humans via direct contact, contaminated objects, or airborne transmission. It also defines the basic reproduction number (R0) as the average number of new cases caused by an infectious individual, estimates R0 for SARS-CoV-2 to be between 1.5-2.5, and notes that an R0 over 1 indicates prevention measures may be needed.

Contex of Covid-19? • The COVID-19 of the acronym "coronavirus disease 2019", is the protagonist of the global pandemic that we are currently experiencing. • With great health, economic and social repercussions. To date more than 84 million confirmed cases and more than 1.8 million deaths worldwide. What is Covid-19? • SARS-CoV-2 is an RNA virus with a single positive sense strand, enveloped in a lipid membrane. It belongs to the genus Betacoronavirus. • Its genome consists of approximately 30 kilobases (kb) and encodes four structural protein. • Although the most important is the S protein (Spike protein) that envelops the coronavirus giving rise to a morphology similar to a "crown", which is why it receives the name of coronavirus. Transmission of Covid-19? • Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 occurs between infected humans and susceptible persons. Key concepts of Covid-19 • COVID-19 is produced by the SARS-CoV-2 infection and is responsible for the worldwide pandemic we are now living through. • SARS-Cov-2 is an RNA virus. • The SARS-Cov-2 genome consists of 30 Kb. • And It encodes 4 structural proteins, the most important of which is S. • Transmission: • Direct contact. • Contaminated objects. • Airborne transmission. Basic reproduction Number (Ro) • Ro is the average number of new cases, which will produce a new case in an infectious period. • It is an estimator of the capacity of an infectious disease to be transmitted in a population. • It is a very useful parameter in the field of public health and indicates when it would be necessary to establish prevention measures (R0 >1). • According to WHO data, the R0 of SARS-CoV-2 is estimated to be between 1.5 and 2.5.
