The ratio of emfs of the cells,=,

PRECAUTION
1. Key plugged into theresistance box must ensure good electrical
contact.
2. Position of rheostat contact should not be disturbed before
finishing the task of finding the balance length with both the cells.

INTERNAI RESISJAN(F OF A CELL
Aim: Delemmation of the Inenal resistance gvCn el using
olenti0metei
Apparatus: 'otcntionmcter, batery, given cell. galvanomete, resisance hox and
IWo keys

Principle Principle of potentiometer: When a steady current lows through a

conducting wire of uniform thickness, potential diflercnce between any
Iwo points on it is directly proportional to the length of the wire
between those two points.

Formula Intcmal resistance of the cell,

P=RG-l2)

Where R-resistance unplugged in the standard

resistance box,
balancing length for the given cell,
l2 - balancing length for the given cell whenya
resistance R is connected in parallel to it.

Procedure:
1) The connections are made as shown in the cireuit diagram.
2) Keeping key K, closed and Key Kz opened, the circuit is checked for opposite
deflections by placing the Jockey at the two ends of the wire PQ alternately:
wire from P towards the end Q till the
3) The Jockey /s moved on th
gaivanometer shows zero deflection. The balancing length l1 is measured.
4) A suitable resistance is unpligged in the resistancei box. Keeping both Ki
and K, closed, the balancinglengthl2 is measured.
5) Ammeter reading has to be kept constant throughout the experiment.

R(ly2)
6) Internal resistance of the cell is calculated using theformula, r=

The experiment is repeated for different values of R and the Observations are
7)
tabulated.
