OTHER  TYPES OF    SEQUENCES    -  FIBONACCI


SEQUENCE

Look at the pictures of the different flowers below. How many


petals does each flower have? What do you notice? Are those
numbers familiar to you? Did you know that those numbers can be
represented by Fibonacci sequence?  Let us find out what are the
other numbers in the Fibonacci sequence and how will you figure out
its pattern.

Find the first 11 terms of the sequence defined by the nth term by a1 =
1, a2 = 1 and  an = an – 1 + an – 2

WHAT IS IT

To find an, the preceding terms, an – 1 and an –2 have to be found


first. Since the first two terms are given, then

a1=1
a2=2
a3 = a2 + a1 = 1 + 1 = 2
a4 = a3 + a2 = 2 + 1 = 3
a5 = a4 + a3 = 3 + 2 = 5

Now that you know, what would be the next term for this
sequence. Each term is simply the sum of the first two terms that
precedes it, so that it’s easy to write down as
many terms without struggle.  Here are the first 11 terms:

1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89,…

What is a Fibonacci sequence?

Fibonacci sequence is named after the 13th century Italian


mathematician who used it to solve a problem about the breeding of
rabbits. It is a sequence where its first two terms are either both 1, or 0
and 1; and each term, thereafter, is obtained by adding the two
preceding terms.

The sequence also occurs in a lot of other applications in nature.


Given below is one of the applications of Fibonacci numbers in
nature.
If you look and investigate at a pinecone from the side, you will see
the number of spirals that will show an excellent Fibonacci sequences. Each level
has a certain number of scales that match a Fibonacci number. There are 8
clockwise and 13 clockwise spirals (both Fibonacci numbers).

Guided Activity 1: Try this Out

1. Given the Fibonacci sequence 5, 8, 13, 21, 34,55,89 ... ,find the
next term.

Solution: The next number in the Fibonacci sequence is found by
adding up the two numbers before it. So in this case, 55 + 89 = 144.
Therefore the next term is 144.

2. Find the next 5 terms of the given Fibonacci sequence 144, 233,
377...

Solution: Finding the next 5 terms of the given sequence, 

 233 + 377 = 610                              


 377 + 610 = 987 
  610 + 987 =  1597  
  987 + 1597 = 2584       
 1597+2584=4181                                                                                              

Now, you are ready to solve some problems that involve Fibonacci
sequence. The next activities will test your understanding about this
sequence.

ACTIVITY 4: Problem No More in Fibonacci sequence!

Leonardo Pisano (Fibonacci) pondered the question: How
many pairs of rabbits can be produced from a single pair of rabbits, in
one year, under optimal conditions (none die and the females always
give birth to one male and one female)? Rabbits must be one month
old to reproduce, so only one pair exists again at the beginning of the
2nd month. At the end of the 2nd month, the female gives birth,
leaving 2 pairs of rabbits at the beginning of the 3rd month, the
original pair produce another pair of newborns(while earlier offspring
mature), leaving 3 pairs to start the 4th month. How many pairs of
rabbits will be present at the end of the 12th month (or the beginning
of the 13th month)? Give the complete sequence, where each entry
represents the number of pairs of rabbits at the beginning of each
month.
