Unit 27 review: Digital Photography (LA3: Review)

I framed my model in the center of the frame, in an indirect mode of address; this photo is suitable for
an urban fashion magazine, as this technique brings attention only to what he is wearing, not his face, as
this is a fashion photoshoot. As well as propping my subject in a close-up shot, as my only purpose for
this photo was to display his upper clothing wear, braced with white background; for the vibrant colors
of his red converse shirt and silver chain to pop out, for a visual target for the audience to look, with a
little glimpse of the camouflaged joggers, for a final touch.
Again, I framed my model in the center of the image, in a dimmed white lighting to create a chilled vibe,
reflecting a teenager's mood, also expresses out the dark green theme of his outfit. The image is a close-
mid shot this is to focus on his waist up, in an indirect mode of address by the hiding of his face by a
black Nike hat; again, alluring the audience to his accessories and urban clothes. Exhibiting his green silk
bomber jacket, with its black stripe and silver zip, joint with a jet-black Ted Baker cross-body bag and a
Nike hat. This is suitable for an urban fashion magazine, particularly aimed at the male youth as dark and
green colors, are profound in boy teen culture, as these types of colors signify seriousness and
dominance of their own selves. This is embedded in men to dispose of vulnerability that they think are
in the wear of bright colored clothes.
I used a different production element when taking this photo; I chose him to be placed in an over the
shoulder shot, inviting the mirror effect of his reflection. This type of image production is in the facial
beauty genre, but with the action of his indirect mode of address, of him looking down to his silver
chain; brings curiosity and appeal by the dramatic effect of the mirror setting, connoting how special and
glorious that chain is, for a teenage boy to be vain about, making the teenage audience to consume the
product. Furthermore, his onesie hoodie on his head entices teenage boys of core urban culture, and
expresses youth masculinity of his wear, also makes my model look attractive and aesthetically pleasing.
The purpose of this image is to present the accessory of his silver chain and how it can complement any
clothing you wear, also the over the shoulder shot gives ways on how you can make a onesie cool and
masculine out in public, by the theme of dark, white, and blue colors of his onesie and a hoodie, as
teenage boys tend to forget that a onesie is unisex. On the other hand, I tried to give the room natural
lighting, it did not go through as planned, as it lacked professional lighting, but I love the concept of this
production.
I image manipulated this image, by using Adobe Photoshop to create an aesthetic. I utilized the image
with hue/saturation tool, and I hued the image on the green range scale, this infused with his original
red color of the outfit to pink. Then I used saturation to about +32 on the scale, this effected the whole
image; by the toning of his skin, making him have a bronze blemished look, typical for fashion
magazines. Moreover, I thought about the green moss on the shed and how it had potential to add
something to the image, so I saturated the shed and it deceives the eye and makes it look like graffiti;
also reflecting his pink outfit. Accompanied by the hue of the blue bike, as the tool made it brighter,
creating an urban vibe, like a teenage hangout fest; attracting the teenage audience as they are more
swayed by moods and flavor. The edited hue/saturated pink is appealing to the eye as it gives a deep
resonance to teenagers, it has the power to evoke every type of feeling, in this case pink connotes
warmth, giving ideas for summertime teen fashion. Furthermore, the color pink is typically obligated to
women, but this image conveys to the male teens that wearing pink can still firm your masculinity and
unisex.
The similarities of the framing of both subjects are at the center of the image, in an up shot. They both
represent the classic teenage look of not smiling but giving attitude. The upshot goes along with the
facial expression of the “unbothered look,” this entices the teenage audience as it attains the “coolness
and popularity” of the typical teenage image. This possesses inspired teens to self-prophesize to be
chilled and voguish in urban fashion and lifestyle. However, my image did lack camera quality, which did
not let the colors of his urban wear capture the teen audience’s eye, whereas the professional image
had clear and bold pigmentation of the blue shirt and French hat, this magnifies how creative and daring
she is, which may inspire teens to project their personalities in bright colors. Also, the quality also
compliments her direct mode of address, as her eyes are more defined and sharper, so that the teen
audience may clearly indicate her message, which is key in an urban fashion magazine.
Again, I image manipulated this image on Adobe Photoshop, I changed the color of the image to black
and white. In particular, this changed the color of his red outfit to black, I felt like this was not enough
because my subject's fashion did not pop out. So, on that tool I tuned in the color yellow and put it up to
+60 on the scale, this enhanced the brightness and a rich silver gloss of his chain, Nike sliders, FILA fanny
pack and my subject's laminated design on his shirt “Diesel” and his shorts “Surf mode”. This charms the
teen audience as urban and jewel style shows quality, indicating that you can demonstrate your purpose
without saying anything. The high beams of silver of my subject's fashion, in a black and white dull
world, signifies to teens that you can be trendy and unique, as your fashion makes you stand out full of
interest. I put my subject on a bicycle because this will certainly attract the male teen audience, as it is
urban teen boyhood to be on a bicycle riding around their neighborhood or street.
The similarities of both images are located on the stairs, this is a usual hangout for teenagers, this may
entice teens as they personalize with it. They are put in a full shot, which bids the focus on the designer
trainers. The difference that differs between these two images, is that my subject has a direct mode of
address, whilst the other does not. The reason I put my model with direct address because it gives the
effective illusion that he is calling out to specifically, male teens that this is how boys should dress to
appear poised and modern, obligating boys to look like him in sense of style, and to not feel outdated
but timeless. Finally, they both have accessories, mine has a watch, and the other has glasses, both are
used for different purposes. My image's purpose for the watch is to captivate and spellbind the teen
audience, as the watch symbolizes wealth, and it amplifies your image and personality. Whereas the
purpose of wearing black glasses is to take away the attention from his face and his clothing wear of it
also being black, hooking the audience to only his tie-dye designer trainers. Finally, the only difference
between these images was the camera quality, my camera lacked quality, I tried manual and auto focus
but both ways it did not live up to its expected standards which was frustrating.
I got audience feedback from people on my final photos:

WWW: Your photos were very professional and had excellent production, a lot of thought was put into
these, they made statements without being verbal. The photos were clear, and the clothing was perfect.

EBI: Need more camera angles

Finally, I got my teacher’s feedback on my final photos:

WWW: Your photos really captured the essence of a fashion shoot with a range of outfits on your
model. This combined with some very well framed shots from different angles and distances clearly
showed consideration of the brief and the realities of being a teen in an urban environment.

EBI: Some of your photos would have benefitted from more consideration of the framing and the focus.
Some of the exterior ones speared less focused or maybe you just didn’t capture what you had
intended. A greater consideration of the lighting may also have created some more dramatic imagery.
