SERVICE BULLETIN TOPIC: Vacuum Regulator IDENT NO: 1-2599 SUPERSEDES: NEW DATE: June 30, 1993 SUBJECT: Vacuum Regulator Assembly MODELS AFFECTED: VHP GL, GSI Engines ‘To simplify manufacturing of the vacuum regulator for VHP GL and GSI engines, Waukesha has released a new vaive assembly that does not require machining of the valve plate. Under the currentstyle, the valve plate is locked to the hub with an E-clip (see Figure 1). The plate of the previous style valve is brazed to the hub. Htreplacement ofthe reg- A. CAUTION J inor housing or valve assembly is necessary, be sure to order the correct, part numbers, Since air flow requirements vary between engine models and applications, the hous oD ings and valves are sized or weighted differently wa and are not interchangeable. HousING Disassemble and clean the vacuum regulator annually. Harsh environments may dictate more frequent clean- ing. Update the valve assembly as required. 6 AND 12 CYLINDER ENGINES - CURRENT Removing ‘STYLE VALVE ‘The vacuum regulator assembly is connected to the ASSEMBLY ejector breather (6 cylinder engines) or venturi extractor (12 oylinder engines) through a tee and pipe nipple arrangement. 1. To free the vacuum regulator assembly, back off the ‘conduit locknut on the tapered pipe nipple. 2, Unthread the vacuum regulator assembly from the pipe nipple. Disassembling 1. Remove the elastic stop lock nut (5/16 inch hex) from the end of the regulator rod. 2. Slide the screen off the regulator rod. 3. Remove the O-ting from the groove in the regulator ‘housing ID. 4, Slide the valve plate off the rod. Figure 1. Vacuum Regulator Assembly Page 10f4 Service Bulletin No. 1-2599 ‘Table 1. Thoroughly wash all parts ina non-volatile cleaning solution or solvent to remove accumulations of dust, ‘grease and grit. Dry with low pressure compressed air. 2. Inspect the regulator housing for cracks. 3. Inspect the regulator rod for soratches or burrs. 4, Inspect the O-ring for cuts, tears orloss of elasticity. 5, Inspectthe regulator screen fortears, dents orholes. 6. Inspect the valve plate for nicks, cracks or other damage. 7. Replace any parts of the assembly that are damaged ‘or wom. The part numbers of the current and previous style vacuum regulator assemblies are shown in Table 1. Assembling 1. Insert the unthreaded end of the hub through the hole in the center of the valve plate (see Figure 2). 2. Install the E-clip in the groove of the hub with the ‘concave side facing the valve plate. Verity that the hubis tightly locked to the plate. 3. Ifremoved, use a small paintbrush to apply Lithoplex Grease No. 2 (Multipurpose Lithium Complex Formula threaded end of the regulator rod. Drive the rod into the regulator housing unti it bottoms out in the bore. Use a collet type stud driver for best results. If necessary, tap the end of the rod with a rubber mallet to center it n the bore. vate Hus (WEIGHTED SIDE) LOCK NUT waz Figure 2. Slide on the valve plate with the weighted (threaded) of the hub toward the free end of the rod. NOTE: Verify that the vaive plate moves freely on the rod without cocking or sticking. 6. Slide the O-ring over the rod and into the groove in the regulator housing ID. 7. Tum the vacuum regulator right side up. The outer edge of the valve plate should make complete contact with the O-ring. 8. Slide the screen over the rod untilit seats against the step machined into the regulator housing OD. 9. Install the elastic stop lock nut (6/16 inch hex) on the end of the rod. Replace the lock nut after itis removed the second time. Installing 1. Thread the vacuum regulator onto the tapered pipe nipple until snug (3 or 4 threads). 2. To lock the vacuum regulator in place, tighten the conduit locknut against the regulator flange. NOTE: After cleaning, servicing or replacing any com- ‘ponent of the crankcase breather system, recheck the cerankcase pressure to verify that tis within specification ‘and that all system components are functioning properly.
