Assessment 2 – Practical Demonstration

Instructions for Students:

• This is the second of the two assessment tasks you must complete satisfactorily to be
deemed competent in this unit.
• In this task, you must demonstrate your ability to

o diagnose and repair a fault in two different cooling systems, in which the work must
involve:
 removing and refitting or replacing all of the following components:
 radiator
 water pump
 engine core plugs
 removing and refitting or replacing two of the following components:
 thermostat
 radiator hoses and heater hoses
 heater core
 heater valve
 heat exchanger
 engine fan system

• Your assessor will observe you performing this task and record and assess your performance
in the Skills Observation Checklist.
• Read the Assessment description carefully.
• Assessment must be completed in the simulated automotive workshop.
• You will have 2 hour to complete task 1 and 2 hours to complete task 2.
• You must wear appropriate PPE before entering the workshop.
• Clearly label your work with name, unit code and unit title to all the documents and sheets
that are attached to your submission.
• Review the Observation Checklist so that you are familiar with the behaviors that you are
expected to perform during the observation.
• Review other resources, tools, job aids that provide guidance related to the task you are
going to perform.
• Read the Plagiarism policy and procedure carefully to understand the consequences that
you could face if your work is plagiarized.
• Seek clarification regarding the assessment required to be done, if you do not understand

Task 1
In this assessment, you are required to diagnose and repair a fault in cooling system for the
following scenario:

Low level of coolant.Needs to be topped upevery day.Noticed coolant underneath the car.

Task 2
In this assessment, you are required to diagnose and repair a fault in cooling system for the
following scenario:

Engine overheats; temperature gauge is above the limit. Coolant has been replaced recently
in last service.

In doing so, you should demonstrate your ability to:


• Prepare to diagnose and repair cooling system
• Diagnosecooling system
• Repaircooling system
• Complete work processes

Student Instructions

• Your trainer/assessor will allocate you the vehicles (simulated) with cooling system faults for
diagnosis and repair.

• Wear appropriate PPE and follow WHS procedures at all times while undertaking the
assessment.

• Determine the job requirements from workplace documents (job card).

• Communicate with your supervisor (Assessor) verbally to clarify job requirements and
instructions.

• You should access and interpret cooling system specifications and procedures from the
workplace documents provided.

• Make sure you identify and remove any hazards while performing the task. Manage the
obvious risks and use appropriate control measures.

• Choose, prepare and collect all the necessary tools and equipment required for diagnosis
and repair and follow steps to ensure they are operational before use.

• Undertake all the steps involved in diagnosis of cooling system faults which may involve
inspecting the components for wear and damage, comparing with manufacturer
specifications

• Perform diagnostic tests to identify causes of faults

• Report diagnostic findings and make repair recommendations verbally to your Assessor.

• Obtain repair information to identify repair options and select appropriate tools and
equipment required for repair.

• Carry out repairs, component replacement or adjustments according to manufacturer


specifications

• Carryout post repair testing to confirm fault rectification and repair.

• Undertake a final inspection and make sure there are no damages to the components or
systems

• Clean up the work area, dispose of non-recyclable materials and store recyclable material
in accordance with environmental requirements

• Check and store tools and equipment following workshop procedure.

• Complete all the details in the job card legibly and accurately and record details of parts
and material used.
