Also all reference to imperial units has been omitted, Users of this standard should also note that in eddition to observing the require- ments of the standard, they should at the same time ensure compliance with such statutory requirements, rules and regulations as may be applicable to the individual ship coricerned CONTENTS Page SPECIFICATION FE Scope sae case sae 3 2. REFERENCED DOCUMENTS. |The following standards are referred to in this standard: AS 1101 Graphical Symbols for General Engiesring Part 3—Symbols for Welding AS 1204 Structural Steels—Ordinaty. Weld able Grades AS 1554 SAA Structural Stool Welding Code Part 1—Welding of Steel Structures 3. CLASSIFICATION. The ladders shall, be ‘classified by a type code according to the shape of the rungs, the orientation of square rungs and the numbet of rungs, as follows: (a) The first letter indicates the shape of the cross- section: those with circular cross-section shal be Type R and those with square cross-section shall be Type (b) The second letter, applicable to Type $ ladders only, indicates the orientation of the square cross-section; those in which a diagonal of the square is vertical shall be indicated by D and those in which two faces of the square are vertical shall be indicated by F. (©) The final symbol is a number which shall be 1 for Jadders with steps formed by a single rung and 2 for ladders where each step is formed by two rungs. ‘Table | illustrates the vatious classified types in this standard TABLE LADDER TYPES Type Shape ot cross [Number of ngs per secton of rage ere 2 ‘Great (ound) Rr R? DEFINITIONS. _For the purpose of this stand- ad, the following definitions apply: 4.1 Shall and Should—'shall is taken to be mandatory and “should” is taken to be advisory 4.2 Ladder—a structure with steps attached to stiles, for ascending and descending from one level to another. 4.3. Stile—a vertical or sloping member of a ladder onto which the rungsare mounted, Stiles usually oceur in pairs, The terms ‘side rail” and ‘stringer’ are synonymous with the term ‘stile’ 4,4 Step--a horizontal member of « ladder con- sisting of one or two rungs. 48 Rung—a steel bar whose cross-section iscither circular of square, used in the construction of a step, 4.6 Rise—the vertical distance between the tops of adjacent steps. 5 MATERIAL. The material used in the con struction of the ladder shall be hot-rolled structural grade low carbon (mild) steel, suitable for welding and Complying with AS 1204,’The material shall be supplied in flats, rounds and squares as required NOTE: Tite purchser should 0 specify i he requires materia, cule ban tha etied above, 6 SHAPE AND DIMENSIONS. Ladders. shall conform to the shape and dimensions shown in Figs | and 2, Dimensions w (width between stiles) and b (breadth of stiles) shall be as indicated in Table 2 for the designated size. TABLE 2 DESIGNATED SIZE OF LADDERS Breadth of sles, Designation | Width between | "5, mm Spam | agate | [ine [ame Ladders sh the deck, landing or platform to the bottom step is equal to the rise of each step in the ladder, The maximum vertical distance of a ladder between landings shell not exceed 6000 mm, The length of the stiles may be calculated as shown in Appendix A. Stiles shall be attached to the supporting structure at points not greater than 2 m apart. On long ladders, fone of more intermediate attachment Jugs shall be provided so that the spacing of the attachment points {o the supporting structure shall not be more than 21a, The spacing of the attachment points should also be copyRIGHT AS 1035-1983 equal unless one or more of the intermediate tugs fouls a step in which case it should be relocated not more than [50 mnt from its true equal position, 7 CONSTRUCTION, 7. Attachment Lugs. ‘The upper, lower and any intermediate attachment lugs shall be attached to the stiles by one of the following methods: (a) Fillet welded tap joints on the outside of the stiles as shown in Fig, 3(8). (b) Butt welded joints as shown in Fig. 3(6). (©) Bolted to the outside of the stiles as shown in Fig, 3(0), Bolts and nuts shall be M20 fitting through 22 mm diameter holes NOTE: Of methods (a) and (t), method () is prefered, 7.2. Alternative Method for Lower Attachment. Notwithstanding the requirements of Clause 7.1, the stiles may be extended and their lower ends attached by either of the following methods (a) An attachment lug bolted to the outside of the as shown in Fig. 4(a) bolts and nuts shall be M20 fitting through 22 mm diameter holes, (b) No separate lug requirement, the stiles to be welded to the deck, landing or platform as shown in Fig. (0). 7.3. Attachment of Rungs to Stiles. ‘The rungs shail be welded to the stiles in accordance with one of the four schemes shown in Fig, 5, Round holes in stiles for Schemes 2, 3 and 4 shall be drilled or punched. Square holes in'the stiles for Scheme 2 shail be punched NOTE: Where eders are tobe usd in areas subjettocorrsion tndjor pone echanial drag the. porchuer should Tealest the manufactarerto provide scheme 3 ot 3 of Fig’3 74. Welding, All welding shall comply with the requirements of AS 1554, Part L. Dimensions of filet welds refer to leg length. NOTE: AS 1101, Part 3, shouldbe ead in conjunction with the fignres inthis shard 75. Accuraey. Ladders shall be straight in both prineipal planes through the longitudinal axis to an accuracy of | in 250, Rungs shall be perpendicular to the stiles within a deviation of 0.5 degree. 8 FINISH, Ladders shall be free from defects and any projections liable to cause damage to hands and have a minimum of distortion. All sharp edges shall be radiused smooth. They shall be treated for corrosion resistance as specified by the purchaser. 9 DESIGNATION. Ladders shall be designated bby a combination of symbols consisting of letters and figures arranged in the following order: Symbol Meaning, 1... (optional) Number of this Australian standard, ie. AS 1035, 2.s+. Type number as specified in Table 1. + Angle @ of the centreline of stiles to the horizontal (see Notes). 4... Designated size as specified in Table 2 5 sas.
