Subject: Well Control Answer All Questions Exam: Midterm

Class: 4th year 2nd semester Group – C Date: 29.06.2021
Examiner: Najah Saeed Abd. No.32 to No 48 Time: 120 Mints

PART-ONE
Q1:A: Explains in your words why there is often flow from the pipe when making
connections if you know the well is under control (No Kick Happen)?

Q1:B: While preparing to circulate Kill Mud, the gas bubble begins to migrate.
If no action is taken: (Explain your answer briefly)
1. what will happen to the pressure in the gas bubble as it rises:
a. Increase
b. Decrease
c. Remain approximately the same
2. What will happen to Bottom hole Pressure?
a. a) Increase
b. b) Decrease
c. c) Remain approximately the same
3. What will happen to shut in Casing Pressure?
a. Increase
b. Decrease
c. Remain approximately the same
4. What will happen to the pressure on the Casing Seat?
a. Increase
b. Decrease
c. Remain approximately the same

Q2: A: For the Figure given beside, Find :

 Put the Figure Beside in U-Tube Module
o What’s the physical meaning of 400 psi?
o What’s the Physical meaning of 600 psi?
 Flow Direction in DP side
 Flow Direction in

Q2: B: You are pulling out of hole. Two x 93 ft stands of 8" drill collars have been stood back
in the derrick. The displacement is 0.0538 bbls./ft. According to your Assistant Driller, 10
bbls should be pumped into the well. It only takes 10 bbls to fill the hole.
(Answer yes or no to each question with brief Explanation)
a. Are the calculations correct?
b. Have you taken a 5 bbls influx?
c. All Ok, keep going

PART-TWO
Q3: A: In a 7 500’ well, the target ECD being kept while drilling is 15.5ppg. If the mud
density used is 15.0ppg and annular friction losses are 300psi, determine:

a) If it is necessary to apply backpressure while drilling, and, if the answer is yes,

determine its value.
b) If it is necessary to apply backpressure during connections (static periods), and, if the
answer is yes, determine its value.

Q3: B: Given: the Following Data

Casing Data
Surface casing: 1,850 ft of 133⁄8-in. 48 lb/ft
Intermediate: 8,643 ft of 95⁄8-in. 32.30 lb/ft
Liner: 8,300 to 14,500 ft of 7-in. 20 lb/ft

Hole Data
Bit diameter: 61⁄8-in.
Total Depth (TD): 17,800 ft

Drill String Data

Tapered drill string:
5-in. drill pipe 19.50 lb/ft to 8,000 ft
31⁄2-in., 13.3 lb/ft to16,800 ft
1,000 ft of 43⁄4-in. OD x 21⁄4-in. ID Drill collars
Surface system:
Three pits: 8.5-ft high, 6-ft wide, 30-ft long. In two pits there
is 67 in. of mud, and in the remaining pit there is 45 in. of mud
with drill string in hole.
Mud weight: 12.3 lb/gal
Determine:
1) The total capacity of the surface system in bbl, bbl/ft and bbl/in.
2) Total mud volume in surface system in bbl.

2
Q4: A: An influx is taken while drilling at 6000 ft and the
well is shut in. Casing and drill pipe shut in pressures are
recorded as 900 psi and 600 psi respectively. Current mud
weight is 10 ppg.
Calculate:
 Mud weight required to balance formation pressure:
HP_kmw =P form
 KMW=?

Q4: B: An influx was taken in a well with the following conditions:

 Well Depth = 18 000’
 Mud Density = 14ppg
 Shut-in Pressure = 1564psi
Determine the influx height if the gas gradient is 0.1 psi/ft and the bottom hole equivalent
mud weight is 15 ppg?

Good Luck
