CARL FISCHERe (65 Booch Soe, Now York NY 10012 Cony 2007 by Ca Foy LLC ia by _ Alvis conc ee tt, Wr7s Seer BRB 44 Be BReose Foreword “Throughout history, the trumpet and trombone have always enjoyed a close partnership. From the dys of cornettos and sackbuts to the modem instruments we play today, trumpeters end trombonist continue to share a special musical bond. In the orchestral literature, there is @ great deal of interplay between the trumpet and trombone, ‘and the resulting textue Is elways distinctive. Our inspiration for this collaboration wes 8 mutual agree- ment that there was, however, 2 lack of fine music avalable for trumpet and trombone. Performing duets Is probably one ofthe best ways for you es @ musician to listen and work on your Intonation and phresing as you interact withthe colleague playing next to you. This will also sharpen your abit to identity who has the melody and, therefore, o determine when to yield to that player while remembering the maxim that melody always leads ‘One unique aspect ofthis collection is our duet format, which proves for a variety of instrumental combinations. The duos can be played with two trumpets, two trombones, or ane of each. In addition, ‘the trumpet or the trombone can play either the top or the bottom part of each piece. This micand- ‘match fest offers a wide range of technical challenges that should give each player the maximum benefit of playing ina range of keys, registers, and difculy levels, providing an equal musical challenge in each part so that both players are stretched and engaged. You may even want to record yourself pay: Ing one part end perform duets with yourself, ‘Throughout these places, there are a number of passages where brackets are shown next to the staff. These brackets indicate the option of taking 2 particular passage up or down an actave depending on the trumpet/trambone combination being used. This is meant to assist in the blend of textures and enhance both the fecilty and the voicing in each ifferent instrumental scenario. One can also switch the line being played In repeated sections for added interest. Dynamics and articulation markings were typically sparse in most original manuscripts ofthe pleces included in this book. Because ofthis, we added lta in the way of musical eclting and opted to leave ‘dynamic and phrasing choices primal to the performer We have been good friends for many years and have often wished that there were more IRerature for trumpet and trombone for study, performance, or Just for casuel reading. We had a great time assembling this collection and hope that this vill help create many future trumpet and trombone part nershipst Michael Sachs —Joseph Alessi Principal Trumpet Principal Trombone Cleveland Orchestra New York Philharmanic, About Michael Sachs and Joseph Alessi ‘Michael Sachs Joined The Cleveland Orchestra as Principal Trumpet in 1988, Since his appoint- ‘ment, Mr. Sachs has been frequently featured as soloist with The Cleveland Orchestre, as in the worlc premiere of John Willams’ Concerto for Trumpet and the United States premiere of Hans Werner Henze's Requiem.
