Dear Mr. Luciano,
‘As you are aware, on December 17, 2021 you recelved a Notice of Condemnation for 8 City Ship Canal
(a.k.a, 250 Ganson Street) to address the imminent danger that the Great Northern Elevator presents following the
\windstorm on December 11th, While the imminent danger needs to be addressed, there is the possibilty of
mitigating that danger and saving the elevator wholly or in part. As Mayor of Buffalo, | am asking you to make
‘every effort to preserve the Great Northern Elevator.
‘The Great Northern Elevator is the only surviving brick box elevator in North America and the oldest
surviving elevator in Buffalo's Grain Silo District. The grain elevator was invented in Buffalo, it is central to what put
us on the map. Our stories intersect with the Great Northern Elevator; it is one of the places where ADM,
‘Supermarket to the World, connects with a city that grew from the grain industry. | believe that preserving the
Great Northern Elevator will tell both our stories to the nation and world for generations to come wi
showcasing your commitment to the communities and industrial heritage upon which ADM's success was built
While saving the elevator will carry a hefty cost, there are programs that could significantly offset those
costs. The City offers its support in securing resources such as historic and brownfield tax credits, city property tax
abatements, sales and mortgage tax exemptions, ancl working with our partners in the New York State and Federal
‘government levels.
| appreciate that ADM is willing to consider some form of preservation. Its important to note that there
are also several offers from reputable entities to either form a partnership in preservation or to buy and save the
elevator.
‘This elevator is central to why Buffalo is labeled the “elevator capital” of the world. Without it, we lose an
icon and a structure that was acclaimed 124 years ago as “among the most important engineering works of
modern times", The story of our city Is told through our buildings and would be deeply impacted by the loss of the
elevator. | appeal to you to save the Great Northern Elevator and make our legacy part of yours.

Sincerely,
ByrofW. 8
