Abstract
1. Introduction

2. René Magritte
The Belgian artist René Magritte3 is one of the most famous representa-
tives of surrealism, a school of thought from the first half of the 20th cen-
tury that addresses unconsciousness and dreams by creating paintings
that depict these worlds with remarkable precision.
As it happens, many of Magritte’s works can be given a mathematical
interpretation. For instance, Le fils de l’homme, which depicts a man with
a bowler hat whose face is covered by an apple, visualizes the human
desire to see beyond what can be seen, and La Clairvoyance shows a man
who is observing an egg but drawing a flying bird. Both works perfectly
interpret what mathematicians are driven by and how a mathematical
mind works.
One of Magritte’s best-known works is a series of paintings in which
he shows everyday objects with different labels or text describing them.
The text is the heart of these works, since they confuse, puzzle and even
irritate the observer. This is because the text seems to be contradictory
at first glance, challenging our intuition and our experience. The most
famous one, La Trahison des Images, shows a realistically drawn pipe and
the text Ceci n’est pas une pipe–This is not a pipe–written below.

3. Henri Matisse
Technique used in this work was inspired by the late work of Henri
Matisse4 who, with fragile health resulting from an intestinal operation,
developed the method of drawing with scissors, as he called it. He had
an assistant who painted a paper board in different colours and later
cut them into the shapes he needed. The reason why this technique is
referred to in this work is connected to the fact that Matisse refused
to give up once he was no longer able to create paintings. Rather, he
made up a new way to express himself, which is why the scissors repre-
sent perseverance, creativity and reinvention. This dead-end situation
and Matisse’s reaction to it can be compared to the background that
this work refers to and to the attitude that the mathematicians dis-
cussed in this work have shown when facing these problems. Obtaining
a counterintuitive result is unsettling and baffling and the discovery of
an antinomy within a formal system carries with it a certain fatality, a
doom. Such a discovery causes the teetering of the system and with
it, our convictions and everything we believe to be true. However, it is
precisely the capability to adapt to those unexpected results and rede-
fine the foundations of mathematics to prevent it from collapsing like a
house of cards that has distinguished those mathematicians who made
these discoveries.

It must have been quite a shock to discover that this is not entirely
true, at least not in the way that these mathematicians thought.5 Given
the direct connection to Pythagoras’ theorem, it is often believed that
the discovery of the irrationality–non-rationality, to be more precise–
of the square root of two was the idea that showed them this fact.
Nevertheless, although the sources are not certain on this point, it is
more probable that these mathematicians encountered the irrationality
of the golden ratio first,6 mainly because the regular pentagon, in which
the golden ratio plays a fundamental role, was the symbol of their order.
The golden ratio is defined by

With the discovery of the irrational numbers, we are virtually just a few
steps away from the definition of the entirety of the real numbers–a few
steps that took us more than twenty centuries to make–and with the
real numbers more problems arise. For in the realm of real numbers, we
encounter many unexpected and not-so-intuitive results, a fact that be-
comes evident when we focus on real functions.
Analysis is a field that many remarkable figures throughout the his-
tory have worked on, but some, such as Augustin-Louis Cauchy, Bernard
Bolzano and Karl Weierstrass, undoubtedly stand out. These men imple-
mented extreme rigour during the processing of the most fundamental
concepts of calculus, which turned out to be pivotal in the development
of this area, and introduced the arithmetisation of analysis, puzzling it out
from the contentious infinitesimals and introducing the now classical
definitions.7 In this way, the foundations of analysis found themselves
on terra firma, which does not mean that counterintuitive results can no
longer be found. There are continuous functions defined on a compact do-
main with infinite length, everywhere-continuous but nowhere-differenti-
able functions or functions that verify the intermediate value property but
are not continuous. It seems that one can construct a function with what-
ever property one desires it to verify. In summary, analysis is a pathway to
many properties that one may consider unnatural.

which is clearly finite. Now, for the area of the surface of the Gabriel’s
Horn, we have
15

Bearing in mind that this idea is nonsense in the first place, since an infi-
nitely long object cannot be real, to explain the mistake in this reasoning,
it is sufficient to remark that paint particles are not infinitely small, which
is why this idea fails.
This example reveals our problems in intuitively working with the real
line. The fundamental role of the real numbers in mathematics and their
mathematical beauty are beyond doubt, but on the other hand, they lack
the intuitiveness of the rational numbers. When first confronted with
them, we are usually taught how to use real numbers without utterly un-
derstanding their true nature, which is due to the fact that there is a not-
so-evident abstraction hidden behind this set of numbers. This abstrac-
tion is strongly connected to the complex concept of the completeness
of the real numbers, a notion we implicitly owe to Richard Dedekind, who
was the first one to consistently describe the continuum with his novel
idea of what we now call Dedekind cuts.9 It requires a certain mathemati-
cal maturity to fully understand the axiomatic framework that underlies
this issue. This leads to the important question of how to teach abstract
concepts and ideas in a pedagogical and practical way without forget-
ting to transmit their true meaning. On a personal note, this manuscript
is the result of the answer I found to this particularly difficult question:
by telling stories around the abstract mathematics that is being taught
and thereby humanizing mathematics. In addition to this, we dare to ask
what led René Descartes to call these numbers real.

Demian Nahuel Goos, The Treachery of Mathematics
behind them, they seem unattainable and out of reach, and the mere
idea of looking in these directions seems to be a perilous and foolishly
hopeless endeavour. Today, we have the Millennium Prize Problems, an
example of a famous list of such problems, of which only Poincarè’s con-
jecture has been solved (by Grigori Perelman). Moreover, David Hilbert’s
list of 23 problems presented in 1900 during the Second International
Congress of Mathematicians in Paris is probably the most storied and in-
fluential list of open problems, for it shaped mathematical thinking for
decades to come.
However, antiquity had its own problems. Three geometric problems
remained unsolved for more than twenty centuries,10 the most complex
among them probably being the quadrature of the circle. The goal was to
construct a square of area equal to the one of a given circle using only a
compass and a straightedge and nothing more. The impossibility of this
undertaking is a consequence of the proof that the number π is transcen-
dental, which was obtained in the 19th century.11
The other two problems, the construction of a cube that doubles the
volume of a given one and devising a general method to partition an angle
into three equal parts, can be settled using the results of Évariste Galois.
Once again, it is not possible to do what the problem asks us to do, which
means that all three of the classical problems of antiquity, which have
been waiting two thousand years for a solution, can still not be solved.

Less disappointing, however, are the possibilities that arise from the
mathematics created by Galois in this context. The starting point of this
was the quintic equation, the question whether the roots of a polyno-
mial of degree 5 can be expressed in terms of radicals, which in itself has
been one of the most important open problems since the Renaissance.12
Galois answered that question negatively–apparently this was a bad
habit of his–by creating one of the most significant branches of algebra:
group theory. By stating that group theory is the study of symmetries,
we can understand why it is so influential and why there are that many
applications of Galois’s work in real-world phenomena, for our world and
the physics we use to describe it obey the laws of symmetry. To recapitu-
late, by answering a rather theoretical question about a polynomial equa-
tion, centuries-old questions were settled and two essential theories of
modern algebra, which have deep connections to our real world and the
way we describe it, have been developed.
When talking about open problems, one question always remains:
Which dragons will be tamed next? What problem will be solved in the
near future and what tools will be created to do so? Will a new branch of
mathematics emerge in the process? The thrilling thing is that we cannot
do anything other than speculate.

“No one shall expel us from the paradise that Cantor created for us”,
David Hilbert exclaimed, and although this statement mainly mirrors his
viewpoint regarding many philosophical issues of his time, it also expounds
a particular idea: the idea that Cantor’s work on set theory is one of the
starting points of modern mathematics, a paradise worth fighting for.
Cantor created what we now call naive set theory, since it contains de-
ficiencies that had to be corrected afterwards. However, Cantor’s work
was a bold and audacious move, for it was the first time that infinity was
formally integrated into a mathematical theory. Not only that, but infin-
ity was also a key element of Cantor’s work. Until then, infinity had been
more of a philosophical notion than an entirely mathematical concept.
Whilst it was both implicitly and explicitly present in many mathematical
contexts–for instance, in the concept of infinite series or the principle of
induction–mathematicians tried to avoid working with it for obvious rea-
sons. As a consequence, Cantor’s theory sparked a widespread contro-
versy out of which new philosophical currents, such as intuitionism and
constructivism, which were opposed to Cantor’s work, emerged. Other
mathematicians refused to reason about infinity the way Cantor did, but
time proved Cantor right. It was madness, yet there was a method in it.
Cantor’s revolutionary ideas are now widely accepted and they are a part
of the mathematics we now teach and work with every day. Depending
on which area one works in, one will encounter different paradoxes re-
lated to infinity.
One famous paradox that comes from probability is frequently called
the infinite monkey theorem. Imagine that there is a monkey that ran-
domly types letters on a typewriter. Naturally, the result of the monkey’s
work will be a string of random and meaningless nonsense. But now

As we have seen, infinity expresses itself in two main ways: the infinitely
large and the infinitely small, and both of them are equally unsettling. In
the case of the infinitely small, two Polish mathematicians, Stefan Banach
and Alfred Tarski, provided a shocking and disturbing, but also beautiful,
result that seems to put a limit to the real-world applications of mathemat-
ics the way we use it.15

you choose different integers out of the first , then there will be
two among them such that one divides the other one. As a side note, it
is worth mentioning that Paul Erdös liked this last problem so much that
he used it as an initiation problem, meaning that he confronted young
disciples with it to observe their answers.20
There is no doubt that the pigeonhole principle, which is attributed to
Peter Dirichlet, is a beautiful result. Many of the requirements we have for
a result to earn the epithet beautiful are fulfilled: it may be extremely sim-
ple, but it possesses applications in different fields of mathematics that
are also surprising. Mathematicians talk about the beauty in mathemat-
ics in different contexts. A proof can be called beautiful, usually implying
that it uses novel proving techniques or tools that are usually used in oth-
er areas and can unexpectedly be applied in this new context. However,
sometimes the result, rather than the proof, is the beautiful part. When a
large amount of information can be summarized with a brief and simple
formula, when two apparently disconnected branches can be connected
by one single result in a deep and elegant way, or when a theorem’s im-
plications give rise to a whole new branch of mathematics; then we usu-
ally talk about a beautiful theorem. For instance, Andrew Wiles proved
the connection between elliptic curves and modular forms elegantly
connecting two rather opposing theories and, as a consequence, prov-
ing one of the most discussed open problems of mathematics Fermat’s
last theorem. In recent years, a work by Michael Atiyah confirmed that
by showing different mathematical results to mathematicians, neuronal
processes were activated in their brains similar to ones activated in the

because, in these cases, one space will inherit all the properties the other
one possesses, and vice versa. A popular example of this are a mug and
a donut. It can be shown that the mug and donut both behave in exactly
the same way–at least in topological terms. This has been used for the
joke that a topologist cannot distinguish between what he wants to drink
for breakfast and what he wants to eat for breakfast. The key here is that
a donut and a mug both possess exactly one hole, and therefore, we can
imaginarily transform a donut into a mug.
Felix Hausdorff was one of the pioneers in topology, and probably
the one of the fathers of topology who is most strongly connected to
the establishment of the foundations of topology. A fundamental prop-
erty in topology that describes one way of distinguishing between differ-
ent points in a topological space is named after him23.There are numer-
ous ways of distinguishing between points in a topological space, and
although Hausdorff’s version is not used as an axiom of a topological
space the way he meant it to be used, it is widely accepted as the weak-
est definition that is also still useful. In other words, a Hausdorff space
distinguishes between different points in the most efficient way.
But what is the purpose of this if we cannot distinguish a mug from
a donut any longer? Why do mathematicians shamelessly create such
problems? The fact is that topology became one of the most omnipresent
branches of modern mathematics. All mathematical fields can be interpret-
ed in topological terms, and by these means, strong connections between
them can be created. Moreover, it is not surprising that it is possible to
discover real-world applications in the abstractness of topology. A rather

This short story, which ends with the sorcerer restoring the order, is
frequently referred to when a scientific discovery gets out of the hands
of its originator, the discovery of nuclear physics and the resultant hor-
rific weapons being a sorrowful example of such. However, the story fits
the history of mathematics and its foundations with supreme elegance,
since once mathematics was brought to life, it stubbornly and fiercely
obeyed its own laws, and the only position left for the creators was the
role of the apprentice. There was nothing left to do but suffer the slings
and arrows of outrageous fortune.
This irremediable dilemma has led to what we know today as the
foundational crisis of mathematics,27 a debate that tried to settle the

one of his most well-known quotes: “We must know–we will know!” But
Hilbert was deceived, for none of this turned out to be feasible.
Another of Hilbert’s fundamental legacies is the way that we under-
stand axioms today,28 including the meaning we give them and the char-
acter they possess. Originally, axioms were meant to be unquestion-
able, plausible notions. Their validity was to be unquestioned and self-
evident, like Euclid’s “all right angles are equal to one another”, and, like
many concepts of a mathematical nature, the significance of the axioms
remained unchallenged for 25 centuries. However, during the crisis, the
whole mathematical world was–necessarily–turned upside down. For
the axioms, this meant that they lost this intuitive meaning, their self-
evidence, and started possessing significance depending on the logical
implications that are associated with them, the axiom of choice being
just one of the many axioms that fall into this category. This remodelling
of our way of understanding axioms had major implications for the way
we work in mathematics, since we now do not care what lines, points or
planes are, but only what properties they satisfy and what we can de-
rive from them. Hence, many philosophical questions that had no clear
answer and stood in the way in the daily routine of mathematicians,
such as what lines, points and planes are, were banished from everyday
concern.
We now have a notion of what axioms are and how we treat them.
In different branches, we work with different groups of axioms, and al-
though the axioms are widely accepted, they are not undisputed. Will we
change this concept in the future? Will we change the axioms we believe
in? In order to answer these questions, it is paramount to understand
the philosophical and mathematical meanings of axioms, and to do so,
many spirited discussions with well-founded, opposing standpoints are
called for.

(1988): 481–511.

where can be any statement, such as Y: These are no glasses. The prob-
lem with the whole statement is that it can be used to “prove” any affir-
mation at all. This can easily be shown step-by-step by using the law
of identity with our statement and applying other elemen-
tal logical laws. Thus, we obtain the conclusion that by allowing state-
ments such as , and are both derivable, which, of course, is not
acceptable.
However, self-referential statements can also be used constructive-
ly, as Kurt Gödel showed with his colossal incompleteness theorems,29
which are probably the most significant theorems in mathematical log-
ic. In the first theorem, Gödel proves that in mathematics, more pre-
cisely, within any recursive consistent axiomatic system strong enough
to describe the natural numbers, there will necessarily be true state-
ments that cannot be deduced using the chosen axioms. This exhibits
the limits of mathematical growth. The second theorem states that no
such system will be capable of proving its consistency from within the
system. In other words, both of these theorems reveal the impossibil-
ity of Hilbert’s program. Gödel showed this by explicitly constructing
a true statement that cannot be proven or disproven within such an
axiomatic system.
Gödel later said that the origin of the ideas that led to his incom-
pleteness theorems resided in the epiphanic realization that provability
is not equal to truth. This might be considered natural today, since the
definition of a provable statement is well-defined today, yet despite our

hypothesis probably being the most famous. The imminent question that
the incompleteness theorems imply is: What can we prove? Which open
problems can we prove with our axioms, and which are out of reach? These
are particularly important questions to ask when facing conjectures, espe-
cially those that stubbornly withstand any proving attempts over the years.

pondering about its creators, including their lives, motivations and ideas.
Turing’s story is well-known, but it is not the only story. Hausdorff, for
instance, never stopped doing research–not even during the National
Socialistic regime under which he suffered persecution and discrimina-
tion. The compromises that he had to make in his devotion to his work
are truly admirable. When Hausdorff and his wife eventually received a
deportation letter, they made a desperate and tragic decision to take
their own lives. Tarski, on the other hand, was more fortunate during this
same despotic era. Wishing to attend a forthcoming conference in the
United States, he took the last ship leaving Poland prior to the German
and Soviet invasions and thereby escaped almost certain death. He was
later reunited with his wife and children. In times of war and turmoil,
Bertrand Russell declared himself a pacifist and paid for his convictions
with his liberty. He used his time in prison to write a memorable book,
Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy. On a lighter note, it is said that
during his citizenship hearing, Gödel claimed to have found an inconsis-
tency within the U.S. Constitution that allowed the U.S. to be turned into
an autocracy. Support from his friends Oskar Morgenstern and Albert
Einstein, who both attended the hearing, was necessary to prevent
Gödel’s chances of obtaining citizenship from running aground.
One can find similar stories about almost every mathematician, and
they will all have a different effect on us. However, without any doubt,
these stories give mathematics a special meaning, a reason for its
existence.
17. Conclusions
In this work we saw how the mathematical results, methods and ideas
of numerous pivotal mathematicians in human history are intrinsically
connected and how the paradoxes they dealt with and the artistic inter-
pretation in the series The Treachery of Mathematics exhibits these con-
nections. The art created by René Magritte and Henri Matisse serves as
tool to do so. The philosophy found in Magritte’s work provides an artis-
tic way of representing the mathematical concepts, the paradoxes and
counterintuitive results, and the style used by Matisse helps to highlight
the key role that many distinguished mathematicians played in the his-
tory of mathematics and the settlement of its foundations. In this way, a
novel and creative approach to different philosophical and mathematical
issues has been created.

(Pablo Ruiz

This article is a result of a part of research on the Saint Sava’s heritage seen
through the prism of the application of aeropagite pattern of proportion and
establishment of the social order based on the principles of harmony. The
starting point for this research was an insufficient scope of the epistemological
analysis of the Nomocanon of Saint Sava (1219) and the Serbian national
constitution that stemmed from it, but also the pursuit for comprehensive
understanding of the cause and consequence of the continuous dedication
of the Serbian begetters to the idea of harmony. The aim of this article is to
expand the image of the cognitive basis and experiences built in our medieval
heritage, with a special review of the teachings on the principle of harmony
and consonance (which have been transferred among the Serbs through the
teachings of Saint Sava from medieval to modern times). The key aspect in
that regard is the generalisation of three principles (principle of consonance,
principle of the continuity of knowledge and the principle of relatedness),
which made the medieval foundation for the preservation of the harmonious
order within the “proportioned to God” action and conciliarity of the Serbian
church, people and the state. The article offers a short overview of the ideas,
insights and approaches in relation to the understanding and application of
the principle of harmony achieved by the greats of the Serbian science and
arts in the period from the 18th to the 20th century. The purpose of this article
is to expand the awareness of the foundations and the historical scope of
the development of the idea of harmony in the achievements of the Serbian
people, through a multidisciplinary approach to research, i.e., the centuries
of effort to establish a harmonious measure and consonance in the spiritual
development of an individual and conciliar relationship between the social,
church and state life and activities. This article is dedicated to the marking of
eight centuries of the Saint Sava’s teachings.
Key words: Saint Sava, Nomoncanon, proportion, harmony, consonance

The subject of our research is the origin of Mihajlo Pupin, that is, the ori-
gin of the Pupin family. One of the main goals of the article is to provide new
data and interpretations regarding the presence of the above-mentioned
family in Idvor, determine as precisely as possible the year of their arrival to
this place, as well as to show the place (places) where they had previously
lived. The article was compiled with the help of literature, but also using origi-
nal material that has not been presented to the scientific public so far, or at
least not in its entirety, using modern methods of determining the paternal
origin of the genus (Y DNA).

(City of London).

Abstract
The aim of this article is to determine the epistemological significance
of the existence of paradoxes in physics, the reasons for their
establishment and to define their structure in order for them to be
more recognizable. The intention was to classify paradoxes in physics
according to common factors, and to show that a paradox in physics
has become a recognizable and acceptable category from a scientific-
philosophical and scientific-historical point of view.
Keywords: paradox, physics, classification, types of paradoxes, exparadox
1. Introduction
Many books and works in mathematics, logic and philosophy have been
written about paradoxes. In these areas, certain attempts at synthesis
have been made in order to make the classification of paradoxes by com-
mon factors in various ways. There are often paradoxical situations in
everyday life. What is not explained philosophically, artistically or scien-
tifically becomes a subject of wonder. A paradox is a real surprise–it is a
still-developing skill to wonder why particular uncertainties are so clearly
expressed, when in many ways it should not be so.

The roots of the meaning of the word paradox come from the Greek
word paradoxos. In Latin language, the Greek word is taken with the
same meaning: paradoxum. In the Middle Ages, the terms insolubilia
and antinomy were used, in terms of the meaning of the word paradox.
This word was created as a coin of two words: para and doxa. Para is a
preposition in Greek language, which has the meaning of contradiction,
such as, for example: on the contrary, opposite, therefore, error,
mistaken, misleading, misconception. Doxa is a noun which means: glory,
reputation, voice, etc. It can have a conveyed meaning: what is gained,
or most likely in this case: opinion or point of view. So, the coin paradox
means against opinion or against the point of view. Paradoxes are opposed
to the adopted knowledge.
Not every paradox is equally paradoxical. There are various reasons
why paradoxes in physics are treated as paradoxes–intuitively unaccept-
able theoretical assumptions or intuitively unacceptable experimental re-
sults. For a paradox in physics, it does not necessarily mean that the error
of interpretation or explanation of the phenomenon (as Feynman points
out) is the reason for its establishment. Observers are often incapable
of observing certain natural phenomena. This incompetence, ingrained
in the act of observation, is often unrecognizable to the subject itself.
Subjects of observation are aware of their own limitations, but they of-
ten do not know exactly where this border is. Due to this inability of the
subject to express itself in the right way (because physical phenomena
cannot be fully understood), paradoxes were and will be a fact insepara-
ble from human knowledge. According to the reason for the emergence
of the counterintuitive effect of paradoxality, the original partition was
done according to the type of paradox in physics to be used in this article.
It was noted that the authors often used the term paradox in a non-
compliant way. This article should help identify different types of para-
doxes, which have not been distinguished in physics so far.
We can find a lot of works about paradoxes in philosophy and logic.
Here, a connection is established between the physical view of the
world, based on observation and experiments, and a philosophical one
that seeks to establish a “conceptual scheme through a logical study”.3
Common factors are generated based on the analysis of paradoxes
in physics. Knowledge is shaped in an epistemological and ontological
form, if it contains paradox. This established the relationship between
the paradoxes in physics and their classification.

2. Classifications of paradoxes
In his book The Aim and Structure of Physical Theory, Pierre Duhem (1861–
1916) writes the following in the introduction of the section entitled The
role of natural classifications and explanations in the evolution of physical
theories:
“We have proposed that the aim of physical theory is to become a
natural classification, to establish a logical coordination among diverse
experimental laws serving as a sort of image or reflection of the true or-
der according to which the realities escaping us are organized. Also, we
175

have said that on this condition theory will be fruitful and will suggest
discoveries.”4
When a paradox is classified into a particular group, it can simultane-
ously belong to other groups as well: false paradox, sorites paradox or,
for example, a paradox of limit. Due to the existence of several types of
classification and the lack of principles in the criteria by which these clas-
sifications are made, one paradox can be classified into several groups.
The recognition of paradoxes is still insufficiently defined.
Willard Quine makes the distinction between three types of paradox-
es.5The same division is explained in a similar way by Stephen Francis
Barker in his book Philosophy of Mathematics. The following classification
was based on the examples of logical paradoxes and the paradoxes of
mathematical logic:6
1. Veridical paradoxes (paradoxes of verification) are paradoxes whose
result is absurd, but presented in a way that makes it appear true.
It is a situation seemingly impossible or contradictory but never-
theless true. Examples: Frederic’s birthday in the operetta Pirates of
Penzance,7 Arrow’s impossibility theorem, Simpson’s paradox, The
existence of an equal number of even and odd numbers according to
Cantor’s theory, etc.
2. Falsidical paradoxes are based on the results that do not just seem
untrue, but really are false. The proof derived by seemingly correct
reasoning that leads to an illogical and false conclusion. Examples:
various false proofs in algebra,8 The horse paradox, Zeno’s paradoxes,
etc.

7 In the operetta The Pirates of Penzance by William Schwenck Gilbert and Sir
Arthur Sullivan, a young man by the name of Frederic joins the pirates at the age
of 21. The conditions of his contract prevent him from joining prior to his 21st
birthday. Frederic was born on 29 February. He was 21 years old but he only cel-
ebrated his 5th birthday.
8 The 2=1 proof. Augustus De Morgan version: assume that X=1, multiply both
sides by X => X2=X. Subtract 1 from both sides => X2-1=X-1. Transform the left side
as follows (X-1)(X+1)=X-1. Divide both sides by X-1 => X+1=1. When X is replaced
by 1 in accordance with the original assumption, we have that 2=1.

Note: The error that leads to contradiction in this paradox is the division by X-1,
assuming that X=1. The equation is divided by zero, which creates infinity on both
sides of the equation because a finite value divided by zero results in infinity.

III. The degree of development of the fields within which they appear
(in cases of formulating a new field or crisis of reasoning in a defined
field).
I.
Paradoxes can be grouped according to a field of physics. There are vari-
ous divisions, and this is just one of them:20
– Classical physics;
– Quantum physics;
– Relativity physics.
Ivan V. Aničin (1944–2016)21 put forward a definition that coincides
with my personal understanding of physics: “Physics is describing nature
by numbers”22. This definition is necessary to see what is disturbing that
“house” of numbers and what is it that makes it paradoxical, in some
situations. Physics is a science whose consistency, apart from factual-
experience definitions, is also based on mathematics–the strictest nor-
mative discipline of the human mind. In order for a particular physical
phenomenon to be explained, it is necessary for it to be mathematically
explained.
Paradoxes arise due to difficulties in the intuitive adoption of the fac-
tual situation. These “difficulties” are very “visible” in the case of STR,
OTR and quantum mechanics.
II.
Paradoxes, according to whether they originate from observational-
experimental or normative mathematical-theoretical analysis in physics,
can be distinguished by the obscure character:
1. Experimental paradoxes–they appear when laboratory experiments
are performed and their results have no satisfactory explanation, or
when the explanation of a phenomenon is a physically verifiable pre-
diction whose results are inconsistent with expectations.

theoretical idea has not yet been fully formulated. They have a short
duration, as a tool to solve a problem (Wheeler’s paradox, Loschmidt’
paradox, Zermelo’s paradox, Einstein-Bohr box paradox, etc.);
5. Paradox of assumption is a paradox where the assumption of an ex-
planation of the phenomenon itself is not already intuitively prob-
able (it is contrary to everyday experience), and a deductive conclu-
sion (on certain theoretical principles) leads to contradiction to the
observed realistic state of the physical system. The paradox exists
within the theory itself which is consistent, but the measurement re-
sults are unverifiable or poorly verifiable (STR “greater” to “smaller”
contradiction paradoxes, Submarine paradox, Grandfather paradox,
GZK paradox, etc.);
6. Paradox of paradigm is a paradox that exists in the domain of a para-
digmatic point of view, and when there is no paradigmatic view of
changing paradoxes. The real experience is opposed to a certain
theoretical point of view and the change of the essential principles
also changes the explanation which is no longer in contradiction with
the observed data (Ultraviolet catastrophe paradox, Olbers’ paradox,
Clausius’ paradox, De Broglie’s box paradox, etc.).
It is possible to classify paradoxes in physics by various criteria. For
example, in physics, the question of continuum and discontinuum is of
primary importance. On the basis of a principled attitude about the struc-
ture of nature, a physical image of the world is being built. It is possible
to define physical paradoxes based on this diversity:
– Paradoxes of continuum physics;
– Paradoxes of discretion physics.
This division should distinguish between paradoxes belonging to con-
tinuum physics from those belonging to discontinuum physics. A good
example of a continuum paradox is Ultraviolet catastrophe paradox.
Considering the problem of ultraviolet radiation from the continuous
point of view, the paradox is that the Earth should have been incinerated
by the Sun’s radiation. Considering the problem from the discontinuous
point of view, the paradox does not exist. This is also a paradox of para-
digm since from one paradigmatic viewpoint the paradox exists and from
the other it does not. In this case, however, one paradigmatic viewpoint
does not exclude the other.
Contradictions in physics can result in paradoxes. Contradictions in
consistent systems indicate a different kind of conclusion than contra-
diction in inconsistent systems. Understanding of physical reality implies
that paradoxes can arise due to:
193
Phlogiston 29/2021 http://www.muzejnt.rs
1. Errors;
2. Incompleteness of formal knowledge.
If the knowledge of physical reality is adopted as a consistent entity,
then the contradiction that arises must originate from an error. The para-
doxes that appear due to an error are of calibration type (they do not
allow improvisation in scientific knowledge).
The second point implies one of the basic hypotheses in this whole
presentation of the paradox. According to Gödel’s incompleteness the-
orems, it is impossible to form a consistent system without paradox
in mathematics. If such truth is valid for mathematics as the most pre-
cise form of human expression, then it is also implicit in physics. Formal
knowledge in physics is incomplete and, therefore, inconsistent.

Abstract
The field on which religious and the entire spiritual and philosophical
considerations meet and diverge from scientific explorations–is the
very field of the search for reality. Contacts and dialogues, interpene-
trations of various elements of culture, of artistic articulation and cre-
ative outputs, of technologies, accomplished knowledge and cogni-
tive domains – these are some of the most significant characteristics
of the modern age and, moreover, the phenomena which have had
the most essential impact on the development of the Homo sapiens.
Creativity–the quality which, besides other aspects, also captures
the attention from the standpoint of the nature of the mind–and es-
pecially those modes of cognition that can be discerned in the mas-
terpieces of the most gifted artists and in the breakthroughs of the
brilliant thoughts that revolutionized science–apart from the “divine
spark“, also rely on the acquired knowledge and open-mindedness
to dialogue between different factors and to cognitive mobility. With
regards to the above, this paper considers certain elements of Py-
thagoras’ insights and the genesis of his thought. It has been noted
that his understanding of harmony, his mathematical and theoretical
considerations, together with his religious thought justify a discus-
sion of his search for the total, all-encompassing reality. An analysis
is provided of the religious aspect of Pythagoras’ personality and his
intellectual mysticism within his rationalist ideal of an impartial ob-
server, a philosopher in search of the truth, as well as the importance
he attached to ethics, self-training of the soul and ascetic way of life.

1. Introduction
As Bruce Wexler wrote in his book Brain and Culture which deals with neu-
robiology, ideology, and social change–apart from the development of
speech/language as one of the most significant attributes of the human
species, no other feature of development has proven more conspicuous
and more important than the contact between scattered isolated com-
munities that for dozens of thousands of years had lived unaware of the
existence of the others.2 The very idea of tools is not characteristic of the
antecedents of the contemporary humankind, although it had a decisive
impact on the evolution of the mankind for–as Wexler points out–there is
the example of some isolated chimpanzee groups having some rudimen-
tary forms of culture today, which is reflected in their use of various tools
and techniques in order to pick ants out of their habitats. Encounters and
integration of cultures are consequences of the development of trans-
portation means, new patterns of storing and disseminating information
and of the population growth.3
The peak of this development can be currently seen in the commu-
nication and information technologies of the contemporary age where
technologies, science and mathematization increasingly permeate man’s
way of thinking and his entire life, imposing changes on the economy and
societal patterns, values and creative work, i.e., the culture and civiliza-
tion in their broadest sense.
The rise of engineering and technologies and especially the develop-
mental interdependence of science and technology, have been gener-
ated through the contact and dialogue between knowledge as a science
(artes liberales) and knowledge as a practical knowledge/craft (artes me-
chanicae), through the cognitive interpenetration of fields that had exist-
ed without mutual contact for a long time, until Renaissance.4 After the
initial contact, Western philosophy and science began to move toward
modern science, unfettering themselves–more daringly and faster–from
the terms and techniques of the Aristotelian logic in explaining religious

more years later, whereby its value is looked upon with a fresh eye/mind;

deeper understanding of the significance of the dialogue in the evolution

such as Archimedes who was ascribed not human but divine wisdom23;
another such man was Pythagoras, who was taken as a divine figure with
the full structure of his calm, dignified posture imbued with wisdom and
learning, and also because of his conduct in life, as well as ethical and
spiritual principles.24 However, the notion of art ranged from the inspira-
tion by the Muses to the craft, which was seen as mimesis.
In the perspective of ancient Greeks, the relation between music
and astronomy reached far back to the mythical times when the Muses
represented knowledge as a whole. The Muses inspired tragedy (under
the patronage of Melpomene), epic poetry and elegies (Calliope), his-
tory (Clio), religious poetry and sublime hymn (Polyhymnia), astronomy
(Urania), erotic poetry (Erato), comedy (Thalia), musical art (Euterpe),
choral dance and song (Terpsichore).
“Human and divine beings used to–originally at least–communicate
in a sublime and primarily musical form”.25
As for the painting and sculpture, as well as architecture, the ancient
Greeks did not think that they needed creational sparks and inspirations.
“Like Plato, Aristotle too thought that art was imitation. However,
while Plato thought that art imitated nature and humans in a subservi-
ent manner, condemning it for that reason, Aristotle considered art
could and was obliged to imitate the natural and human reality, but in
a way that would produce types, paradigms.”26 “Aristotle taught that
art surpassed copying of reality and depicted natural and human reality
as it should exist, i.e., as it corresponded to its true idea.”27 In answer to
Plato’s disapproval of dramatic poetry, Aristotle launched his definition
of tragedy which said that–by provoking pity and fear–tragedy led to pu-
rification of feelings, which he called catharsis. “However, tragedy does
not fulfil its ethical purpose just by purifying the affects of pity and fear,
which brings serenity to the soul, but also by rousing cerebration and
cognizance in the spectators: when a spectator who has experienced the

rebirth and redemption.32 The Orphic Hymns contain the germs of the
idea that the Sun possibly governs other celestial bodies and that those
bodies may be circling around it.
Mysteries used to be secret cults accessible only to the initiated par-
ticipants–the mystai. By way of religious rites, formulas and teaching, a
direct body-soul exposure was offered to the divinities which get “un-
masked” at the peak of the celebration–epopteia, to join the participants
in unio mystica. Of the Greek mysteries, those relevant to philosophy in-
clude Orphic, Eleusinian, Dionysiac, and–in the Hellenistic period–Isiac (of
Isis) and Magna Mater. Many philosophers, e.g., Heraclitus, Pythagoras,
Empedocles, Plato, the Stoics, and especially Neo-Platonists, used to join
in the mysteries, presenting their own teachings as commitment to the
mysteries.33
Before Pythagoras, the Greek Orphism was analogous to Asiatic mys-
tery religions. Referring to that fact, Russel emphasizes Pythagoras’ in-
fluence on philosophy, underlining that “the combination of mathemat-
ics, which began with Pythagoras, characterized religious philosophy in
Greece, in the Middle Ages and in the modern times right down to Kant.
But in Plato, Saint Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Descartes, Spinoza and
Leibniz there is an intimate blending of religion and reasoning, of moral
aspiration with logical admiration of what is timeless, which comes from
Pythagoras, and distinguishes the intellectualized theology of Europe
from the more straightforward mysticism of Asia”.34
“I do not know of any other man who has been as influential as he
[Pythagoras] was in the sphere of thought”, wrote one of the most re-
spectable historians of philosophy, Bertrand Russel, providing further
elaboration: “Platonism is, when analysed, found to be in the essence
of Pythagoreanism. The whole conception of an eternal world, revealed
to the intellect but not to the senses, is derived from him [Pythagoras].
But for him, Christians would not have thought of Christ as the Word; but
for him, theologians would not have sought logical proofs of God and
immortality”. 35

seemed to be the first things in the whole of nature, they supposed the
elements of all things, and the whole heaven to be a musical scale and a
number”.39
“One of the central concepts with the Pythagoreans was certainly ra-
tio, and that applies on all domains of creation – ranging from science to
as far as sculpture.”40
“He [Pythagoras] discovered the importance of numbers in music
and the connection which he established between music and arithme-
tic survives in the mathematical terms ‘harmonic mean’ and ‘harmonic
progression’. He thought of numbers as shapes, as they appear on dice
or playing cards. We still speak of squares and cubes of number, which
are terms that we owe to him. He also spoke of oblong numbers, trian-
gular numbers, pyramidal numbers, and so on. These were the numbers
of pebbles (or, as we should more naturally say, shot) required to make
the shapes in question. He presumably thought of the world as atomic,
and of bodies as built up of molecules composed of atoms arranged in
various shapes. In this way he hoped to make arithmetic the fundamental
study in physics as in aesthetics.”41
“The greatest discovery of Pythagoras, or of his immediate disciples,
was the proposition about right-angled triangles, that the sum of the
squares on the sides adjoining the right angle is equal to the square on
the remaining side, the hypotenuse. The Egyptians had known that a tri-
angle whose sides are 3, 4, 5 has a right angle, but apparently the Greeks
were the first to observe that 3² + 4² = 5² and, acting on this suggestion,
to discover a proof of the general proposition.”42
While Anaximander used to derive everything from the infinite or the
unlimited, Pythagoras related that concept to the one of the limits which
lend shape to the unlimited. At that point, Copleston introduces the ex-
ample of music–with a mention of “health” limited by “tuning in” that
resulted in the harmony of health–in which the ratio and harmony can
be expressed arithmetically. Applying the doctrine on the whole world,
the Pythagoreans spoke of the so-called cosmic harmony. However, they
210
D. Dobrosavljević, Searching for the Reality
did not settle for merely indicating the significant role of numbers in the
universe: they went further to proclaim that things are numbers.43
“Relating harmony to the soul, the Pythagoreans built up an ethos
of the music which for a long time constituted the essence of the educa-
tional role of music. Since the reception of tone was strong in the soul,
accord/harmony takes place between them.”44 “As they reduced it [mu-
sic] to the harmony of number, actually, to the synthesis of the infinite
and the finite, they [the Pythagoreans] deduced as follows: 1. The cos-
mos with the spheres is arranged symmetrically and fixed within a deter-
mined musical numerical progression; 2. Souls and all things immanently
possess a quantitative-harmonic structure. Thereby, the souls–by way of
catharsis–reach a harmonic balance inside themselves, through tranquil-
izing and healing of man’s psyche, while elementary acoustic facts are
extracted from things which (the facts) are based on the principle of har-
mony. [...] The aesthetics of music elaborated in this way paved the way
to the Pythagorean philosophy in which the soul, number and cosmos
(harmonic sphere) took the central place. This further paved the way to
the cathartic role of music, in fact, to its psychological power.”45
The Pythagorean harmony made a strong impact on science and even
became an important discipline which was studied as a compulsory sub-
ject at a higher level of education, within the scholastic quadrivium. Musica
mundana, also referred to as musica universalis, was related to the music
of the spheres and suggested the harmony of the spheres. According
to Regenbogen and Mayer, in the Pythagorean tradition, music of the
spheres was mimesis of the celestial accords manifested as emission of
a unique hum based on their orbital revolution (harmony) which remains
inaudible to the human ear yet, to Plato’s mind, by all means accessible
to the ‘spiritual ear’.46 Harmony of the spheres, which is–as it has been
said–usually defined as a doctrine guiding one to Pythagoras’ teachings
and harmonization of mathematics, music and astronomy, according to
which “the heavenly bodies, being large objects in motion, must produce
music”,47 was a topic of philosophers’ and astronomers’ studies until the
modern age. In the work of Johannes Kepler, we shall find harmony and
science entirely fused again, whether it be in astronomy or geometry or
polyhedra as Platonic regular solids or physical harmony of planets in mo-

jest. Falsehood must not “insinuate itself into the habits of professed
friends”. One should never abandon a friend on account of misfortune.62
In Pythagoras’s school, students lived monastic lives in their commu-
nity, instructed to follow extremely high ethical principles and spiritual
exaltation, sticking to rules of nutrition and healthy bodily habits which
their teacher himself practised since early age. Pythagoras aspired to
spread his teaching on proper conduct of life in the society, and for some
time his influence was visible in Croton; but the citizens did not like his
strict rules and he was even forced to leave the city towards the end of
his life. Classical writings about the Pythagoreans hardly ever fail to note
that Pythagoras’ adherents continued to promote the idea that they and
their life rules should govern and that it was beneficial for the state; at
times they were successful, but–as Russel remarks–“the unregenerate
hankered after beans, and sooner or later rebelled”.63 Those rebellions
may not have been carried out so successfully had not the Pythagorean
teaching been such a threat for tyrants and their authority, as it turned
out during Plato’s study visits to Sicily when he came to be on friendly
terms with the Pythagoreans.
Pythagoras was very dignified in appearance. “His dress was white,
very clean, his bed-clothes also were white and woollen [...]. He was nev-
er known to have eaten too much, or to have drunk too much”, or to
exhibit any other kind of inappropriate behaviour. “He abstained wholly
from laughter, and from all such indulgences as jests and idle stories. He
never chastised any one, whether slave or free man, when he was angry.”
He would warn his disciples to ask themselves a few questions whenever
they return home, and those were: “In what have I transgressed? What
have I done? What is it that I should have done that I have omitted?” He
taught, among other things, that people should associate with each oth-
er in such a way as not to make their friends enemies, but to render their
enemies friends; that they “should not think anything exclusively their
own”; that they should “assist the law, and to make war upon lawless-
ness”. Some of Pythagoras’ precepts for proper conduct of life advised
“not to destroy or injure a cultivated tree, nor any animal which does
not injure man”, while men “should avoid eating too much flesh, and in
travelling should let rest and exertion alternate”; moreover, they should
“exercise memory” and “display a reasonable gratitude to the Gods and

eminent men by hymns”.64 Owing to the stability of the soul and mastery
of the body, his every word and action were accomplished with tranquil-
lity and inimitable calmness. He was never overcome by anger, laughter,
envy, contentiousness, or any other mental disturbance or rashness.65
In the Pythagorean view of the world, the significance of the
soul’s self-training and self-purification stems from the relatedness of
Pythagoreanism to Orphism. Addressing this issue, Copleston puts em-
phasis on the following: “Orphism was connected with the worship of
Dionysus, a worship that came to Greece from Thrace or Scythia, and was
alien to the spirit of Olympian cult, even if its ‘enthusiastic’ and ‘ecstatic’
character found an echo in the soul of the Greeks. But it is not the ‘enthu-
siastic’ character of the Dionysian religion that connects Orphism with
Pythagoreanism; rather it is the fact that the Orphic initiates, who, be it
noted, were organised in communities, were taught the doctrine of the
transmigration of souls, so that for them it is the soul, and not the im-
prisoning body, that is the important part of man; in fact, the soul is the
‘real’ man, and it is not the mere shadow-image of the body, as it appears
in Homer. Hence the importance of soul-training and soul-purification,
which included the observance of such precepts as avoidance of flesh-
meat. Orphism was indeed a religion rather than a philosophy–though it
tended towards Pantheism [...]; but, in so far as it can be called a philoso-
phy, it was a way of life and not mere cosmological speculation”.66.
“The Pythagoreans were certainly impressed by the importance of
the soul and its right tendance, and this was one of the most cherished
convictions of Plato, to which he clung all his life”–concludes Copleston,
adding that “Plato was also strongly influenced by the mathematical
speculations of the Pythagoreans–even if it is difficult to determine the
precise extent of his debt to them in this respect”.67
Religion and physis which were for a long time intermingled in terms of
issues and methodology, as was the case with religion and philosophy,
religion and ethics and religion and society–stand in direct connection
with the idea of reality and interpretation of the notion of the world. The

Spanish flu epidemic which swept through the entire planet in 1918,
arrived to Eastern Serbia, and Boljevački district of the Timočki County as
well, in the fall of that same year. This district was located in the valley of
the Crni Timok River, between the mountain ranges of Kučajske mountains,
Samanjac, Rtanj, Tumba, Slemen and Tupižnica and the terrain is basically
mountainous, while only the lower part consists of hills and plateaus, which
caused a certain kind of isolation from the neighbouring areas and relatively
low population density. The first fatality on the territory of this district was
registered, and recorded as such, in the village of Planinica on October 23
[November 5], 1918, while the last one was also recorded in the same vil-
lage, on January 2 [January 15], 1919. The article gives dates both accord-
ing to Julian and Gregorian calendar, on one hand, because the records in
the record books were kept according to Julian calendar, and on the other,
because of the generally accepted date of the arrival of the liberation army
and the liberation of the country. Spreading of the epidemic can be related
to liberation after the three-year Bulgarian occupation only conditionally, be-
cause the liberation army had arrived to this area three weeks before the first
recorded fatality. The analysis of the number of inhabitants and the mortality
rate yielded the supposed result of around 0.5% of the Spanish flu fatalities. If
we compare the situation in the Boljevački district to the territories in Serbia
that have been analysed so far, it is noticeable that the disease was less pres-
ent, especially in certain villages, which can be interpreted in terms of the rel-
atively low population density and natural isolation of the people wo lived in
seclusion on their estates, without much contact, especially during wartime.
The sources for research are record books of deaths, from which the data on
the fatalities were gathered and based on them, the statistical analysis was
conducted. The relevant literature was also used.

(Automatic Fingerprint Identification System – AFIS).

in the criminalistic practice on the turn of the 19th into the 20th century.
Dactyloscopy continues to develop in the sense of advancement of methods
of acquisition, detection, processing and standardisation of fingerprint
storage, while in the late 20th century, with the breakthroughs in computer
science and telecommunications, the traditional methods of fingerprints
investigation were supressed by the automatic systems for identification of
fingerprints (AFIS).
Synergy of centuries worth of efforts has led to the fact that modern
forensics has become unimaginable without the application of the knowledge
on friction ridges skin impressions—colloquially speaking, fingerprints, or
the application of modern methods for registration, acquisition, search and
identification of persons based on them.
This is exactly why dactyloscopy is one of the fundamental forensic
disciplines.

inventor. The Renaissance period and the attempt to transform the skill
into a method was presented by the work of Giordano Bruno. Empiricism is
presented through the work of Francis Bacon. Rationalistic processing and
transformation of the skill into the method was presented through Leibniz’s
influence.
Before the conclusion, the material has been unified in an epistemologi-
cal-logic section. The above-mentioned units offer a lot of material on antiq-
uity and scholastic influences, which is why they were not discussed in detail.
Sections of the article titled Survival of the Skill and After Conclusion, as
well as a description of the modern scientific method of data mining, bring
the topic to modern times.
The table has been envisioned as an appendix that would facilitate navi-
gation through the material and its unification into a wider meaningful whole.
The table also contains several “military” years (fall of Constantinople, fall of
Smederevo and siege of Vienna), which provide an answer to a superficial
question from the lecture: “Why There was no (Influence of) Renaissance in
Certain Parts of the Europe”.

(Charles Le

Pavle Milenković
Academy of Medical Sciences — Serbian Medical Society, Belgrade
Stem cell biology and role in regenerative medicine are now well-defined.
In respect of history, contribution of research on hematopoietic stem cells
was of great importance. Research in protection of lethally irradiated animals
was promoted after the end of World War II and the used nuclear exposures.
At the time, that has led to the definition of hematopoietic stem cells as CFU-S
(Colony Forming Unit-Spleen), which was subsequently demonstrated to be
a more complex problem. The experimental procedure to perform CFU-S
assay was established in Serbia – Yugoslavia, by Pavle Milenković after he had
completed his education in Paterson Laboratories, Christie Hospital and Holt
Radium Institute in Manchester. Upon his return home, he was faced with a
number of difficulties that are described in detail. CFU-S assay was performed
in combination with other test systems developed and used at the Institute
for Medical Research and in cooperation with facilities and scientists at
the Military Medical Academy, Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade, Institute of
Oncology and Radiology and the Institute of Physics. A respectable number
of contributions to the science was achieved with a constantly increasing
number of citations in literature. The article provides a concise review of
the above-mentioned contributions, which include: role of T lymphocytes
in regulation of haematopoiesis, heterogeneity of hematopoietic stem
cells, influence of hypoxia on stem cells, role of interleukins (Il-1, IL-17)
in haematopoiesis and contributions in human bone marrow/stem cells
transplantation, including participation in consultation teams, basic research
in activation of cells through specific signal pathway and influence of plasma
on stem cells.
Basic scientific achievements enabled participation of authors in
education of physicians at the master programs and specialisation studies
in haematology.
Titles of the contributors mostly refer to the period of their achievements.
Keywords: stem cells, haematology, irradiation, regulatory factors,
haematopoiesis, regeneration

ства из праксе, баштина, казуистика, студије случаја и сл.);
карактера);

кључних речи Web of Science).

Hereinafter the precise referencing model is presented, since we know
from experience that the sources from the Internet often do not have the
necessary referencing data.38 Generally there are no authors of texts, or
even titles, and it is unclear to whom the site belongs. If these elements
exist, they are referred to as articles from the magazine, with the addi-
tion of address. If there are no referencing elements, only address and
donwloading date are specified. If there are some data, they are listed
as follows:
Note or footnote
Name of organization, “Text title“, Name of the website owner, down-
loaded date, http://address.
References
Name of organization. “Text title“, Name of the website owner, down-
loaded date, http://address.
36 Ibid.
37 Ibid.
38Exception are electronic magazines which have all the necessary data. The
manner of referencing is mentioned in the text.

- Footnotes including several sources which prove one fact should be di-
vided by a comma.
- Multiple references of a single footnote should refer to a previous foot-
note (e.g. Look the footnote number...above).
- In case of an anonimous work, footnote and bibliographic unit begin
with the work title.
- For direct source referencing without page numbers, chapter title,
