Briefly describe ALL of the following terms:

(a) Geometric progression technique to determine height interval, (5 marks)


(b) Geoidal undulation and gravity anomalies, (5 marks)

(a) Explain and illustrate with diagrams the arrangement of the graticules for the three different
map projection classes. Give one map projection example for each class to illustrate your
answer. (14 marks)

(b) Describe the basic properties of Mercator projection. (6 marks)

Question 3 (Show all your workings and give your answers to 2 decimal places)

(a) Point A and Point B are on the Earth’s surface at the geographical coordinates listed below.

Point A:  = 115 degrees 30 minutes East and  =24 degrees 0 minutes North
Point B:  = 80 degrees 0 minutes East and  =24 degrees 0 minutes North
Radius of Earth: 6372km

i. Calculate the difference between the great circle distance and the distance along the
parallel between Point A and Point B. (10 marks)

ii. Calculate the total length of the spherical triangle formed by North Pole, Point A and
Point B. (4 marks)

(b) Describe the basic properties of the Hong Kong 1980 Grid System. (6 marks)

(b) Determine the smallest contour interval of a 1: 20,000 map series with nominal slope gradient
of 30o. (4 marks)

(c) Describe the Hong Kong 1:1,000 map index system. (4 marks)

(d) Describe the two main issues for hyposmetric colouring of contours. (6 marks)
